2 Corinthians 8

1 Moreover, brethren, we make known to you the grace of God which hath been given in the churches of Macedonia; 2 how that in much proof of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded unto the riches of their liberality. 3 For according to their power, I bear witness, yea and beyond their power, they gave of their own accord, 4 beseeching us with much entreaty in regard of this grace and the fellowship in the ministering to the saints: 5 and this, not as we had hoped, but first they gave their own selves to the Lord, and to us through the will of God. 6 Insomuch that we exhorted Titus, that as he had made a beginning before, so he would also complete in you this grace also. 7 But as ye abound in everything, in faith, and utterance, and knowledge, and in all earnestness, and in your love to us, see that ye abound in this grace also. 8 I speak not by way of commandment, but as proving through the earnestness of others the sincerity also of your love. 9 For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might become rich. 10 And herein I give my judgment: for this is expedient for you, who were the first to make a beginning a year ago, not only to do, but also to will. 11 But now complete the doing also; that as there was the readiness to will, so there may be the completion also out of your ability. 12 For if the readiness is there, it is acceptable according as a man hath, not according as he hath not. 13 For I say not this that others may be eased and ye distressed; 14 but by equality: your abundance being a supply at this present time for their want, that their abundance also may become a supply for your want; that there may be equality: 15 as it is written, He that gathered much had nothing over; and he that gathered little had no lack.

16 But thanks be to God, who putteth the same earnest care for you into the heart of Titus. 17 For he accepted indeed our exhortation; but being himself very earnest, he went forth unto you of his own accord. 18 And we have sent together with him the brother whose praise in the gospel is spread through all the churches; 19 and not only so, but who was also appointed by the churches to travel with us in the matter of this grace, which is ministered by us to the glory of the Lord, and to show our readiness: 20 avoiding this, that any man should blame us in the matter of this bounty which is ministered by us: 21 for we take thought for things honorable, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men. 22 And we have sent with them our brother, whom we have many times proved earnest in many things, but now much more earnest, by reason of the great confidence which he hath in you. 23 Whether any inquire about Titus, he is my partner and my fellow-worker to you-ward; or our brethren, they are the messengers of the churches, they are the glory of Christ. 24 Show ye therefore unto them in the face of the churches the proof of your love, and of our glorying on your behalf.

1 Au reste, mes frères, nous voulons que vous sachiez la grâce que Dieu a faite aux Eglises de Macédoine;

2 C’est qu’ayant été éprouvés par plusieurs afflictions, ils ont été remplis de joie, et que dans leur profonde pauvreté, ils ont répandu avec abondance les richesses de leur libéralité.

3 Car je leur rends ce témoignage, qu’ils ont donné volontairement, selon leur pouvoir, et même au delà de leur pouvoir,

4 Nous priant très instamment de recevoir les aumônes et la contribution qu’ils avaient faites pour les saints.

5 Et ils n’ont pas seulement fait ce que nous avions espéré d’eux, mais ils se sont donnés premièrement eux-mêmes au Seigneur, et ensuite à nous, selon la volonté de Dieu;

6 Ce qui nous a fait prier Tite, que comme il avait commencé parmi vous cette œuvre de charité, il allât l’achever.

7 C’est pourquoi, comme vous abondez en toutes choses, dans la foi, dans la parole, dans la connaissance, en toutes sortes de soins, et dans l’amour que vous avez pour nous, faites en sorte que vous abondiez aussi dans cette œuvre de charité.

8 Je ne le dis point par commandement, mais je le dis pour éprouver par l’empressement des autres la sincérité de votre charité.

9 Car vous savez quelle a été la charité de notre Seigneur Jésus-Christ qui, étant riche, s’est fait pauvre pour vous, afin que par sa pauvreté vous fussiez rendus riches.

10 C’est donc un conseil que je vous donne sur cette affaire, car cela vous convient, à vous qui non-seulement avez commencé de le faire, mais qui en aviez eu le dessein dès l’année précédente.

11 Achevez donc maintenant ce que vous avez commencé, afin que comme la promptitude de la bonne volonté y a été, vous l’exécutiez aussi selon vos moyens.

12 Car, pourvu que la promptitude de la bonne volonté y soit, on est agréable à Dieu, selon ce qu’on a, et non selon ce qu’on n’a pas.

13 Je ne veux pas que pour soulager les autres, vous soyez surchargés; mais je veux qu’il y ait de l’égalité.

14 Que votre abondance supplée donc présentement à leur indigence, afin que leur abondance supplée aussi à votre indigence, et qu’ainsi il y ait de l’égalité,

15 Selon qu’il est écrit: Celui lui avait recueilli beaucoup de manne, n’en profitait pas davantage, et celui qui en avait recueilli peu, n’en manquait pas.

16 Or, grâces soient rendues à Dieu de ce qu’il a mis la même affection pour vous dans le cœur de Tite;

17 De ce qu’il a reçu agréablement mon exhortation, et de ce qu’il est parti, avec un plus grand empressement et de son bon gré, pour aller vous voir.

18 Nous avons aussi envoyé avec lui ce frère qui s’est rendu célèbre dans toutes les Eglises par l’Evangile;

19 Et non-seulement cela; mais il a été choisi, par les suffrages des Eglises, pour nous accompagner dans le voyage, et pour porter les aumônes que nous administrons à la gloire du Seigneur même, et afin de répondre à l’ardeur de votre zèle.

20 Nous l’avons fait, pour n’être point blâmés dans l’administration qui nous est confiée de ces aumônes abondantes;

21 Ayant soin de faire ce qui est bon, non-seulement devant le Seigneur, mais aussi devant les hommes.

22 Nous avons aussi envoyé avec eux un de nos frères, dont nous avons éprouvé l’affection en plusieurs rencontres, et qui en aura encore plus en celle-ci, à cause de la grande confiance qu’il a en vous.

23 Pour ce qui est de Tite, il est mon compagnon, et il travaille avec moi pour vous; et à l’égard de nos autres frères qui l’accompagnent, ils sont les envoyés des Eglises, et la gloire de Christ.

24 Donnez-leur donc, en présence des Eglises, des preuves de votre charité, et faites voir que c’est avec sujet que nous nous glorifions de vous.
