Acts 13

1 Now there were at Antioch, in the church that was there, prophets and teachers, Barnabas, and Symeon that was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen the foster-brother of Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. 2 And as they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Spirit said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them. 3 Then, when they had fasted and prayed and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.

4 So they, being sent forth by the Holy Spirit, went down to Seleucia; and from thence they sailed to Cyprus. 5 And when they were at Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews: and they had also John as their attendant. 6 And when they had gone through the whole island unto Paphos, they found a certain sorcerer, a false prophet, a Jew, whose name was Bar-Jesus; 7 who was with the proconsul, Sergius Paulus, a man of understanding. The same called unto him Barnabas and Saul, and sought to hear the word of God. 8 But Elymas the sorcerer (for so is his name by interpretation) withstood them, seeking to turn aside the proconsul from the faith. 9 But Saul, who is also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, fastened his eyes on him, 10 and said, O full of all guile and all villany, thou son of the devil, thou enemy of all righteousness, wilt thou not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord? 11 And now, behold, the hand of the Lord is upon thee, and thou shalt be blind, not seeing the sun for a season. And immediately there fell on him a mist and a darkness; and he went about seeking some to lead him by the hand. 12 Then the proconsul, when he saw what was done, believed, being astonished at the teaching of the Lord.

13 Now Paul and his company set sail from Paphos, and came to Perga in Pamphylia: and John departed from them and returned to Jerusalem. 14 But they, passing through from Perga, came to Antioch of Pisidia; and they went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and sat down. 15 And after the reading of the law and the prophets the rulers of the synagogue sent unto them, saying, Brethren, if ye have any word of exhortation for the people, say on. 16 And Paul stood up, and beckoning with the hand said,

Men of Israel, and ye that fear God, hearken: 17 The God of this people Israel chose our fathers, and exalted the people when they sojourned in the land of Egypt, and with a high arm led he them forth out of it. 18 And for about the time of forty years as a nursing-father bare he them in the wilderness. 19 And when he had destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan, he gave them their land for an inheritance, for about four hundred and fifty years: 20 and after these things he gave them judges until Samuel the prophet. 21 And afterward they asked for a king: and God gave unto them Saul the son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, for the space of forty years. 22 And when he had removed him, he raised up David to be their king; to whom also he bare witness and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after my heart, who shall do all my will. 23 Of this man’s seed hath God according to promise brought unto Israel a Saviour, Jesus; 24 when John had first preached before his coming the baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel. 25 And as John was fulfilling his course, he said, What suppose ye that I am? I am not he. But behold, there cometh one after me the shoes of whose feet I am not worthy to unloose. 26 Brethren, children of the stock of Abraham, and those among you that fear God, to us is the word of this salvation sent forth. 27 For they that dwell in Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they knew him not, nor the voices of the prophets which are read every sabbath, fulfilled them by condemning him. 28 And though they found no cause of death in him, yet asked they of Pilate that he should be slain. 29 And when they had fulfilled all things that were written of him, they took him down from the tree, and laid him in a tomb. 30 But God raised him from the dead: 31 and he was seen for many days of them that came up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are now his witnesses unto the people. 32 And we bring you good tidings of the promise made unto the fathers, 33 that God hath fulfilled the same unto our children, in that he raised up Jesus; as also it is written in the second psalm, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee. 34 And as concerning that he raised him up from the dead, now no more to return to corruption, he hath spoken on this wise, I will give you the holy and sure blessings of David. 35 Because he saith also in another psalm, Thou wilt not give thy Holy One to see corruption. 36 For David, after he had in his own generation served the counsel of God, fell asleep, and was laid unto his fathers, and saw corruption: 37 but he whom God raised up saw no corruption. 38 Be it known unto you therefore, brethren, that through this man is proclaimed unto you remission of sins: 39 and by him every one that believeth is justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses. 40 Beware therefore, lest that come upon you which is spoken in the prophets:

41 Behold, ye despisers, and wonder, and perish;

For I work a work in your days,

A work which ye shall in no wise believe, if one declare it unto you.

42 And as they went out, they besought that these words might be spoken to them the next sabbath. 43 Now when the synagogue broke up, many of the Jews and of the devout proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas; who, speaking to them, urged them to continue in the grace of God.

44 And the next sabbath almost the whole city was gathered together to hear the word of God. 45 But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with jealousy, and contradicted the things which were spoken by Paul, and blasphemed. 46 And Paul and Barnabas spake out boldly, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first be spoken to you. Seeing ye thrust it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles. 47 For so hath the Lord commanded us, saying,

I have set thee for a light of the Gentiles,

That thou shouldest be for salvation unto the uttermost part of the earth.

48 And as the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of God: and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed. 49 And the word of the Lord was spread abroad throughout all the region. 50 But the Jews urged on the devout women of honorable estate, and the chief men of the city, and stirred up a persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and cast them out of their borders. 51 But they shook off the dust of their feet against them, and came unto Iconium. 52 And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.

1 Il y avait dans l’Eglise d’Antioche quelques prophètes et docteurs, savoir, Barnabas, Siméon appelé Niger, Lucius le Cyrénéen, Manahem, qui avait été élevé avec Hérode le tétrarque, et Saul.

2 Comme donc ils vaquaient au service du Seigneur, et qu’ils jeûnaient, le Saint-Esprit leur dit: Séparez-moi Barnabas et Saul, pour l’œuvre à laquelle je les ai appelés.

3 Après donc qu’ils eurent jeûné et prié, ils leur imposèrent les mains, et les firent partir.

4 Eux donc, étant envoyés par le Saint-Esprit, descendirent à Séleucie, où ils s’embarquèrent pour aller en Chypre.

5 Et lorsqu’ils furent arrivés à Salamine, ils annoncèrent la parole de Dieu dans les synagogues des Juifs, et ils avaient Jean avec eux, pour les aider.

6 Ayant ensuite traversé l’île jusqu’à Paphos, ils trouvèrent un certain Juif, magicien et faux prophète, nommé Barjésu,

7 Qui était avec le proconsul Serge Paul, homme sage et prudent. Celui-ci, ayant fait appeler Barnabas et Saul, désirait d’entendre la parole de Dieu.

8 Mais Elymas, c’est-à-dire le magicien, car c’est ce que signifie ce nom, leur résistait, tâchant de détourner le proconsul de la foi.

9 Mais Saul, qui est aussi appelé Paul, étant rempli du Saint-Esprit, ayant les yeux fixés sur lui, lui dit:

10 O homme, rempli de toute sorte de fraude et de méchanceté, enfant du diable, ennemi de toute justice, ne cesseras-tu point de pervertir les voies du Seigneur, qui sont droites?

11 C’est pourquoi, voici, dès maintenant la main du Seigneur sera sur toi, et tu seras aveugle, sans voir le soleil, jusqu’à un certain temps. Et à l’instant l’obscurité et les ténèbres tombèrent sur lui; et tournant de tous côtés, il cherchait quelqu’un qui le conduisît par la main.

12 Alors le proconsul, voyant ce qui était arrivé, crut, étant rempli d’admiration pour la doctrine du Seigneur.

13 Et quand Paul et ceux qui étaient avec lui, furent partis de Paphos, ils vinrent à Perge en Pamphylie. Mais Jean, s’étant séparé d’eux, s’en retourna à Jérusalem.

14 Pour eux, étant partis de Perge, ils vinrent à Antioche de Pisidie; et étant entrés dans la synagogue, au jour du sabbat, ils s’assirent.

15 Et après la lecture de la loi et des prophètes, les principaux de la synagogue leur envoyèrent dire: Hommes frères, si vous avez quelque exhortation à faire au peuple, faites-la.

16 Alors Paul s’étant levé, et ayant fait signe de la main qu’on fît silence, il dit: Hommes Israélites, et vous qui craignez Dieu, écoutez.

17 Le Dieu de ce peuple d’Israël choisit nos pères, et rendit ce peuple illustre, lorsqu’ils demeuraient dans le pays d’Egypte, et il les en fit sortir à bras élevé.

18 Et il supporta leur conduite dans le désert, l’espace d’environ quarante ans.

19 Et ayant détruit sept nations au pays de Canaan, il leur distribua leur pays par le sort.

20 Et environ quatre cent cinquante ans après cela, il leur donna des juges, jusqu’au prophète Samuël.

21 Et ensuite ils demandèrent un roi, et Dieu leur donna Saül, fils de Kis, de la tribu de Benjamin, et ainsi se passèrent quarante ans.

22 Et Dieu l’ayant ôté, il leur suscita David pour roi, à qui aussi il rendit témoignage, en disant: J’ai trouvé David, fils de Jessé, un homme selon mon cœur, qui exécutera toutes mes volontés.

23 C’est de sa postérité que Dieu a suscité Jésus, selon sa promesse, pour être le Sauveur d’Israël.

24 Avant qu’il parût, Jean avait prêché le baptême de repentance à tout le peuple d’Israël.

25 Et lorsque Jean achevait sa course, il disait: Qui pensez-vous que je sois? Je ne suis pas le Christ; mais il en vient un après moi, dont je ne suis pas digne de délier les souliers de ses pieds.

26 C’est à vous, mes frères, qui êtes de la race d’Abraham, et à ceux d’entre vous qui craignent Dieu, que cette parole de salut est adressée.

27 Car les habitants de Jérusalem et leurs magistrats, n’ayant point reconnu Jésus, ont accompli, en le condamnant, les paroles des prophètes, qui se lisent chaque jour de sabbat.

28 Et bien qu’ils ne trouvassent rien en lui qui fût digne de mort, ils demandèrent à Pilate de le faire mourir.

29 Et après qu’ils eurent accompli tout ce qui avait été écrit de lui, on l’ôta du bois, et on le mit dans le sépulcre.

30 Mais Dieu l’a ressuscité des morts.

31 Et il a été vu, pendant plusieurs jours, de ceux qui étaient montés avec lui de Galilée à Jérusalem, qui sont ses témoins devant le peuple.

32 Et nous aussi, nous vous annonçons qu’à l’égard de la promesse qui avait été faite à nos pères,

33 Dieu l’a accomplie pour nous qui sommes leurs enfants, lorsqu’il a suscité Jésus; comme il est écrit dans le second psaume: Tu es mon fils, je t’ai engendré aujourd’hui.

34 Et pour montrer qu’il l’a ressuscité des morts, pour ne devoir plus retourner au sépulcre, il a parlé ainsi: Je vous tiendrai fidèlement les promesses sacrées que j’ai faites à David.

35 C’est pourquoi il dit aussi dans un autre endroit: Tu ne permettras point que ton Saint sente la corruption;

36 Car pour David, après avoir servi en son temps aux desseins de Dieu, il est mort, et a été mis avec ses pères, et il a senti la corruption;

37 Mais celui que Dieu a ressuscité, n’a point senti la corruption.

38 Sachez donc, mes frères, que c’est par lui que la rémission des péchés vous est annoncée;

39 Et que c’est par lui que tous ceux qui croient sont justifiés de toutes les choses dont vous n’avez pu être justifiés par la loi de Moïse.

40 Prenez donc garde qu’il ne vous arrive ce qui a été dit dans les prophètes:

41 Voyez, vous qui me méprisez, et soyez étonnés, et pâlissez d’effroi; car je vais faire une œuvre en vos jours, une œuvre que vous ne croirez point, si quelqu’un vous la raconte.

42 Après qu’ils furent sortis de la synagogue des Juifs, les Gentils les prièrent de leur annoncer les mêmes choses le sabbat suivant.

43 Et quand l’assemblée fut séparée, plusieurs Juifs et prosélytes, craignant Dieu, suivirent Paul et Barnabas, qui les exhortèrent à persévérer dans la grâce de Dieu.

44 Le sabbat suivant, presque toute la ville s’assembla pour entendre la parole de Dieu.

45 Mais les Juifs, voyant la foule, furent remplis d’envie, et s’opposaient à ce que Paul disait, en contredisant et en blasphémant.

46 Alors Paul et Barnabas leur dirent hardiment: C’était bien à vous les premiers qu’il fallait annoncer la parole de Dieu, mais puisque vous la rejetez, et que vous vous jugez vous-mêmes indignes de la vie éternelle, voici, nous nous tournons vers les Gentils.

47 Car le Seigneur nous l’a ainsi commandé quand il a dit: Je t’ai établi pour être la lumière des Gentils, afin que tu sois leur salut jusqu’aux extrémités de la terre.

48 Les Gentils, entendant cela, s’en réjouissaient, et donnaient gloire à la parole du Seigneur; et tous ceux qui étaient destinés à la vie éternelle, crurent.

49 Ainsi la parole du Seigneur se répandait par tout le pays.

50 Mais les Juifs animèrent quelques femmes dévotes et de qualité, et les principaux de la ville, et ils excitèrent une persécution contre Paul et Barnabas, et les chassèrent de leur pays.

51 Mais Paul et Barnabas, ayant secoué la poudre de leurs pieds contre eux, allèrent à Iconie.

52 Cependant, les disciples étaient remplis de joie et du Saint-Esprit.
