Acts 19

1 And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper country came to Ephesus, and found certain disciples: 2 and he said unto them, Did ye receive the Holy Spirit when ye believed? And they said unto him, Nay, we did not so much as hear whether the Holy Spirit was given. 3 And he said, Into what then were ye baptized? And they said, Into John’s baptism. 4 And Paul said, John baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people that they should believe on him that should come after him, that is, on Jesus. 5 And when they heard this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied. 7 And they were in all about twelve men.

8 And he entered into the synagogue, and spake boldly for the space of three months, reasoning and persuading as to the things concerning the kingdom of God. 9 But when some were hardened and disobedient, speaking evil of the Way before the multitude, he departed from them, and separated the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus. 10 And this continued for the space of two years; so that all they that dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord, both Jews and Greeks. 11 And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul: 12 insomuch that unto the sick were carried away from his body handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out. 13 But certain also of the strolling Jews, exorcists, took upon them to name over them that had the evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, I adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth. 14 And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, a chief priest, who did this. 15 And the evil spirit answered and said unto them, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye? 16 And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and mastered both of them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. 17 And this became known to all, both Jews and Greeks, that dwelt at Ephesus; and fear fell upon them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified. 18 Many also of them that had believed came, confessing, and declaring their deeds. 19 And not a few of them that practised magical arts brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all; and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver. 20 So mightily grew the word of the Lord and prevailed.

21 Now after these things were ended, Paul purposed in the spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, After I have been there, I must also see Rome. 22 And having sent into Macedonia two of them that ministered unto him, Timothy and Erastus, he himself stayed in Asia for a while.

23 And about that time there arose no small stir concerning the Way. 24 For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of Diana, brought no little business unto the craftsmen; 25 whom he gathered together, with the workmen of like occupation, and said, Sirs, ye know that by this business we have our wealth. 26 And ye see and hear, that not alone at Ephesus, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul hath persuaded and turned away much people, saying that they are no gods, that are made with hands: 27 and not only is there danger that this our trade come into disrepute; but also that the temple of the great goddess Diana be made of no account, and that she should even be deposed from her magnificence whom all Asia and the world worshippeth. 28 And when they heard this they were filled with wrath, and cried out, saying, Great is Diana of the Ephesians. 29 And the city was filled with the confusion: and they rushed with one accord into the theatre, having seized Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul’s companions in travel. 30 And when Paul was minded to enter in unto the people, the disciples suffered him not. 31 And certain also of the Asiarchs, being his friends, sent unto him and besought him not to adventure himself into the theatre. 32 Some therefore cried one thing, and some another: for the assembly was in confusion; and the more part knew not wherefore they were come together. 33 And they brought Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews putting him forward. And Alexander beckoned with the hand, and would have made a defence unto the people. 34 But when they perceived that he was a Jew, all with one voice about the space of two hours cried out, Great is Diana of the Ephesians. 35 And when the townclerk had quieted the multitude, he saith, Ye men of Ephesus, what man is there who knoweth not that the city of the Ephesians is temple-keeper of the great Diana, and of the image which fell down from Jupiter? 36 Seeing then that these things cannot be gainsaid, ye ought to be quiet, and to do nothing rash. 37 For ye have brought hither these men, who are neither robbers of temples nor blasphemers of our goddess. 38 If therefore Demetrius, and the craftsmen that are with him, have a matter against any man, the courts are open, and there are proconsuls: let them accuse one another. 39 But if ye seek anything about other matters, it shall be settled in the regular assembly. 40 For indeed we are in danger to be accused concerning this day’s riot, there being no cause for it: and as touching it we shall not be able to give account of this concourse. 41 And when he had thus spoken, he dismissed the assembly.

1 Pendant qu’Apollos était à Corinthe, Paul, après avoir parcouru les provinces supérieures de l’Asie mineure, vint à Ephèse; où, ayant trouvé quelques disciples, il leur dit:

2 Avez-vous reçu le Saint-Esprit, lorsque vous avez cru? Mais il lui répondirent: Nous n’avons pas même ouï dire qu’il y ait un Saint-Esprit.

3 Et il leur dit: De quel baptême avez-vous donc été baptisés? Ils répondirent: Du baptême de Jean.

4 Alors Paul leur dit: Il est vrai que Jean a baptisé du baptême de la repentance, en disant au peuple qu’ils devaient croire en celui qui venait après lui, c’est-à-dire, en Jésus, qui est le Christ.

5 Ce qu’ayant ouï, ils furent baptisés au nom du Seigneur Jésus.

6 Et après que Paul leur eut imposé les mains, le Saint-Esprit descendit sur eux, et ils parlaient diverses langues et prophétisaient.

7 Et tous ces hommes-là étaient environ douze.

8 Puis il entra dans la synagogue, et il y parla avec hardiesse pendant trois mois, discourant, pour leur persuader ce qui regarde le royaume de Dieu.

9 Mais, comme quelques-uns s’endurcissaient, et étaient incrédules, décriant la voie du Seigneur devant la multitude, il se retira, et sépara les disciples d’avec eux, enseignant tous les jours dans l’école d’un nommé Tyrannus.

10 Et cela continua durant deux ans, de sorte que tous ceux qui demeuraient en Asie, tant Juifs que Grecs, entendirent la parole du Seigneur Jésus.

11 Et Dieu faisait des miracles extraordinaires par les mains de Paul;

12 En sorte qu’on portait même sur les malades les mouchoirs et les linges qui avaient touché son corps; et ils étaient guéris de leurs maladies, et les malins esprits sortaient.

13 Alors quelques-uns des exorcistes Juifs, qui couraient de lieu en lieu, entreprirent d’invoquer le nom du Seigneur Jésus sur ceux qui étaient possédés des malins esprits, en disant: Nous vous conjurons par Jésus que Paul prêche.

14 Ceux qui faisaient cela, étaient sept, et fils de Scéva, Juif, l’un des principaux sacrificateurs.

15 Mais le malin esprit leur répondit: Je connais Jésus, et je sais qui est Paul; mais vous, qui êtes-vous?

16 Et l’homme qui était possédé de cet esprit malin, se jeta sur eux, et s’en étant rendu maître, il les maltraita si fort qu’ils s’enfuirent de la maison tout nus et blessés.

17 Ce qui ayant été connu de tous les Juifs et de tous les Grecs qui demeuraient à Ephèse, ils furent tous saisis de crainte; et le nom du Seigneur Jésus était glorifié.

18 Et plusieurs de ceux qui avaient cru, venaient confesser et déclarer ce qu’ils avaient fait.

19 Il y en eut aussi beaucoup de ceux qui avaient exercé des arts curieux, qui apportèrent leurs livres, et les brûlèrent devant tout le monde; et quand on en eut supputé le prix, on trouva qu’il montait à cinquante mille deniers d’argent.

20 Ainsi la parole du Seigneur se répandait, et devenait de plus en plus efficace.

21 Après cela, Paul se proposa, par un mouvement de l’Esprit, de passer par la Macédoine et par l’Achaïe, et d’aller à Jérusalem, disant: Lorsque j’aurai été là, il faut aussi que je voie Rome.

22 Et ayant envoyé en Macédoine deux de ceux qui le servaient dans le ministère, savoir, Timothée et Eraste, il demeura encore quelque temps en Asie.

23 Mais il arriva en ce temps-là un grand trouble à l’occasion de la doctrine du Seigneur.

24 Car un orfèvre, nommé Démétrius, qui faisait de petits temples d’argent de Diane, et qui donnait beaucoup à gagner aux ouvriers de ce métier,

25 Les assembla avec d’autres qui travaillaient à ces sortes d’ouvrages, et leur dit: O hommes, vous savez que tout notre gain vient de cet ouvrage;

26 Et, cependant, vous voyez et vous entendez dire, que non-seulement à Ephèse, mais presque par toute l’Asie, ce Paul, par ses persuasions, a détourné du culte des dieux un grand nombre de personnes, en disant que les dieux qui sont faits par les mains des hommes, ne sont pas des dieux.

27 Il n’y a pas seulement du danger pour nous que notre métier ne soit décrié, mais il est même à craindre que le temple de la grande Diane ne tombe dans le mépris, et que sa majesté, que toute l’Asie et tout le monde révère, ne s’anéantisse aussi.

28 Ayant entendu cela, ils furent tous transportés de colère, et ils s’écrièrent: Grande est la Diane des Ephésiens!

29 Et toute la ville fut remplie de confusion; et ils coururent tous ensemble avec fureur au théâtre, et enlevèrent Gaïus et Aristarque, Macédoniens, compagnons de voyage de Paul.

30 Sur quoi Paul voulut se présenter devant le peuple; mais les disciples ne le lui permirent pas.

31 Quelques-uns aussi des Asiarques, qui étaient ses amis, l’envoyèrent prier de ne point se présenter au théâtre.

32 Cependant, les uns criaient d’une manière, et les autres d’une autre; car l’assemblée était tumultueuse, et plusieurs ne savaient même pas pourquoi ils s’étaient assemblés.

33 Alors Alexandre fut tiré de la foule par les Juifs qui le poussaient devant eux; et Alexandre faisant signe de la main, voulait parler au peuple pour leur défense.

34 Mais, dès qu’ils eurent reconnu qu’il était Juif, ils s’écrièrent tout d’une voix, durant près de deux heures: Grande est la Diane des Ephésiens!

35 Alors le greffier, ayant apaisé le peuple, dit: O Ephésiens, et qui est l’homme qui ne sache que la ville des Ephésiens est dédiée au service de la grande Diane, et à son image descendue de Jupiter?

36 Cela étant donc incontestable, vous devez vous apaiser, et ne rien faire avec précipitation.

37 Car ces gens que vous avez amenés ici, ne sont ni sacrilèges, ni coupables de blasphème contre votre déesse.

38 Que si Démétrius et les ouvriers qui sont avec lui ont quelque plainte à faire contre quelqu’un, on tient la cour, et il y a des proconsuls; qu’ils s’y fassent appeler les uns les autres.

39 Et si vous avez quelque autre affaire à proposer, on pourra la décider dans une assemblée légitime.

40 Car nous sommes en danger d’être accusés de sédition pour ce qui s’est passé aujourd’hui, ne pouvant alléguer aucune raison, pour justifier ce concours de peuple. Et quand il eut dit cela, il congédia l’assemblée.
