Galatians 2

1 Then after the space of fourteen years I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, taking Titus also with me. 2 And I went up by revelation; and I laid before them the gospel which I preach among the Gentiles but privately before them who were of repute, lest by any means I should be running, or had run, in vain. 3 But not even Titus who was with me, being a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised: 4 and that because of the false brethren privily brought in, who came in privily to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage: 5 to whom we gave place in the way of subjection, no, not for an hour; that the truth of the gospel might continue with you. 6 But from those who were reputed to be somewhat (whatsoever they were, it maketh no matter to me: God accepteth not man’s person)—they, I say, who were of repute imparted nothing to me: 7 but contrariwise, when they saw that I had been intrusted with the gospel of the uncircumcision, even as Peter with the gospel of the circumcision 8 (for he that wrought for Peter unto the apostleship of the circumcision wrought for me also unto the Gentiles); 9 and when they perceived the grace that was given unto me, James and Cephas and John, they who were reputed to be pillars, gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship, that we should go unto the Gentiles, and they unto the circumcision; 10 only they would that we should remember the poor; which very thing I was also zealous to do.

11 But when Cephas came to Antioch, I resisted him to the face, because he stood condemned. 12 For before that certain came from James, he ate with the Gentiles; but when they came, he drew back and separated himself, fearing them that were of the circumcision. 13 And the rest of the Jews dissembled likewise with him; insomuch that even Barnabas was carried away with their dissimulation. 14 But when I saw that they walked not uprightly according to the truth of the gospel, I said unto Cephas before them all, If thou, being a Jew, livest as do the Gentiles, and not as do the Jews, how compellest thou the Gentiles to live as do the Jews? 15 We being Jews by nature, and not sinners of the Gentiles, 16 yet knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we believed on Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ, and not by the works of the law: because by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified. 17 But if, while we sought to be justified in Christ, we ourselves also were found sinners, is Christ a minister of sin? God forbid. 18 For if I build up again those things which I destroyed, I prove myself a transgressor. 19 For I through the law died unto the law, that I might live unto God. 20 I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I that live, but Christ liveth in me: and that life which I now live in the flesh I live in faith, the faith which is in the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself up for me. 21 I do not make void the grace of God: for if righteousness is through the law, then Christ died for nought.

1 Quatorze ans après, je montai de nouveau à Jérusalem avec Barnabas, et je pris aussi Tite avec moi.

2 Or, j’y montai ensuite d’une révélation, et j’exposai aux fidèles et en particulier à ceux qui sont les plus considérés, l’évangile que je prêche parmi les Gentils; ce que je fis de peur que je ne courusse ou que je n’eusse couru en vain.

3 Et même Tite, qui était avec moi, quoiqu’il fût Grec, ne fut point obligé de se faire circoncire.

4 Bien qu’il y eût de faux frères qui s’étaient introduits parmi nous, et qui s’y étaient glissée secrètement, pour épier la liberté que nous avons en Jésus-Christ, afin de nous réduire en servitude;

5 Nous ne leur cédâmes point, pour nous assujettir à ce qu’ils voulaient; non pas même un moment, afin que la vérité de l’évangile fût maintenue parmi vous.

6 Pour ce qui est de ceux qui sont les plus considérés (il ne m’importe point quels ils ont été autrefois, car Dieu n’a point acception de personne), ceux, dis-je, qui sont les plus considérés, ne m’ont rien communiqué.

7 Au contraire, quand ils virent que la commission de prêcher l’évangile aux incirconcis, m’avait été confiée, comme celle de le prêcher aux circoncis l’avait été à Pierre;

8 (Car celui qui a agi efficacement dans Pierre, pour le rendre apôtre des Juifs, a aussi agi efficacement en moi, pour me rendre apôtre des Géntils;)

9 Jacques, dis-je, Céphas et Jean, qui sont regardés comme des colonnes, ayant reconnu la grâce qui m’avait été donnée, me donnèrent à moi et à Barnabas, la main d’association, afin que nous allassions vers les Gentils, et eux vers les Juifs.

10 Ils nous recommandèrent seulement de nous souvenir des pauvres; ce qu’aussi j’ai eu soin de faire.

11 Et même, lorsque Pierre fut arrivé à Antioche, je lui résistai en face, parce qu’il méritait d’être repris.

12 Car, avant que quelques personnes qui avaient été envoyées par Jacques, fussent venues, il mangeait avec les Gentils; mais dès qu’elles furent arrivées, il se retira et se sépara des Gentils, craignant ceux de la circoncision.

13 Et les autres Juifs usaient aussi de la même dissimulation que lui, de sorte que Barnabas même se laissait entratner à dissimuler comme eux.

14 Mais quand je vis qu’ils ne marchaient pas de droit pied, selon la vérité de l’évangile, je dis à Pierre, en présence de tous: Si toi, qui es Juif, vis comme les Gentils, et non pas comme les Juifs, pourquoi obliges-tu les Gentils à judaïser?

15 Pour nous qui sommes Juifs de naissance, et non pécheurs d’entre les Gentils,

16 Ayant connu que ce n’est pas par les œuvres de la loi, mais par la foi en Jésus-Christ, que l’homme est justifié, nous avons nous-mêmes cru en Jésus-Christ, afin d’être justifiés par la foi en Jésus-Christ, et non par les œuvres de la loi, parce que personne ne sera justifié par les œuvres de la loi.

17 Que, si en cherchant à être justifiés par Christ, nous sommes aussi trouvés pécheurs, Christ est-il donc ministre du péché? Loin de nous cette pensée.

18 Car si je rebâtis les choses due j’ai détruites, je fais voir que je suis moi-même un prévaricateur;

19 Parce que par la loi même je suis mort à la loi, que je vive à Dieu.

20 Je suis crucifié avec Christ, et je vis, non plus moi-même, mais Christ vit en moi; et si je vis encore dans ce corps mortel, je vis dans la foi au Fils de Dieu qui m’a aimé, et qui s’est donné soi-même pour moi.

21 Ainsi, je n’anéantis point la grâce de Dieu, car si la justice vient de la loi, Christ est donc mort en vain.
