Romans 14

1 But him that is weak in faith receive ye, yet not for decision of scruples. 2 One man hath faith to eat all things: but he that is weak eateth herbs. 3 Let not him that eateth set at nought him that eateth not; and let not him that eateth not judge him that eateth: for God hath received him. 4 Who art thou that judgest the servant of another? to his own lord he standeth or falleth. Yea, he shall be made to stand; for the Lord hath power to make him stand. 5 One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let each man be fully assured in his own mind. 6 He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord: and he that eateth, eateth unto the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, unto the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks. 7 For none of us liveth to himself, and none dieth to himself. 8 For whether we live, we live unto the Lord; or whether we die, we die unto the Lord: whether we live therefore, or die, we are the Lord’s. 9 For to this end Christ died and lived again, that he might be Lord of both the dead and the living. 10 But thou, why dost thou judge thy brother? or thou again, why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment-seat of God. 11 For it is written,

As I live, saith the Lord, to me every knee shall bow,

And every tongue shall confess to God.

12 So then each one of us shall give account of himself to God.

13 Let us not therefore judge one another any more: but judge ye this rather, that no man put a stumblingblock in his brother’s way, or an occasion of falling. 14 I know, and am persuaded in the Lord Jesus, that nothing is unclean of itself: save that to him who accounteth anything to be unclean, to him it is unclean. 15 For if because of meat thy brother is grieved, thou walkest no longer in love. Destroy not with thy meat him for whom Christ died. 16 Let not then your good be evil spoken of: 17 for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. 18 For he that herein serveth Christ is well-pleasing to God, and approved of men. 19 So then let us follow after things which make for peace, and things whereby we may edify one another. 20 Overthrow not for meat’s sake the work of God. All things indeed are clean; howbeit it is evil for that man who eateth with offence. 21 It is good not to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor to do anything whereby thy brother stumbleth. 22 The faith which thou hast, have thou to thyself before God. Happy is he that judgeth not himself in that which he approveth. 23 But he that doubteth is condemned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith; and whatsoever is not of faith is sin.

1 Quant à celui qui est faible dans la foi, recevez-le avec bonté, sans contestations et sans disputes.

2 L’un croit qu’on peut manger de tout; et celui qui est faible dans la foi, ne mange que des herbes.

3 Que celui qui mange de tout, ne méprise pas celui qui ne mange que des herbes; et que celui qui ne mange que des herbes, ne condamne pas celui qui mange de tout; car Dieu l’a pris à lui.

4 Qui es-tu, toi, qui condamnes le serviteur d’autrui? S’il se tient ferme, ou s’il tombe, c’est à son maître de le juger; mais il sera affermi, car Dieu est puissant pour l’affermir.

5 L’un met de la différence entre un jour et un autre; l’autre juge que tous les jours sont égaux; que chacun agisse selon qu’il est pleinement persuadé dans son esprit.

6 Celui qui observe les jours, les observe, ayant égard au Seigneur; et celui qui ne les observe pas, ne les observe pas, ayant aussi égard au Seigneur; celui qui mange de tout, mange, ayant égard au Seigneur, car il en rend grâces à Dieu; et celui qui ne mange pas de tout, ne mange pas, ayant égard au Seigneur; et il en rend aussi grâces à Dieu.

7 En effet, aucun de nous ne vit pour soi-même, et aucun de nous ne meurt pour soi-même.

8 Car, soit que nous vivions, nous vivons pour le Seigneur; soit que nous mourions, nous mourons pour le Seigneur; soit donc que nous vivions, soit que nous mourions, nous sommes au Seigneur;

9 Car c’est pour cela que Christ est mort, et qu’il est ressuscité, et qu’il a repris la vie, afin qu’il dominât sur les morts et sur les vivants.

10 Mais toi, pourquoi juges-tu ton frère? Et toi, pourquoi méprises-tu ton frère? puisque nous comparaîtrons tous devant le tribunal de Christ.

11 Car il est écrit: Je suis vivant, dit le Seigneur, que tout genou fléchira devant moi, et que toute langue donnera gloire à Dieu.

12 Ainsi chacun de nous rendra compte à Dieu pour soi-même.

13 Ne nous jugeons donc plus les uns les autres; mais jugez plutôt qu’il ne faut donner aucune occasion de chute, ni aucun scandale à votre frère.

14 Je sais, et je suis persuadé par le Seigneur Jésus, qu’il n’y a point d’aliment qui soit souillé par soi-même; mais celui qui croit qu’une chose est souillée, elle est souillée pour lui.

15 Mais si, en mangeant de quelque viande, tu affliges ton frère, tu ne te conduis plus selon la charité. Ne fais pas périr, par ton aliment, une personne pour qui Christ est mort.

16 Que ce que vous faites de bon, ne soit donc point blâmé.

17 Car le royaume de Dieu ne consiste point dans le manger, ni dans le boire, mais dans la justice, dans la paix, et dans la joie par le Saint-Esprit.

18 Celui qui sert Jésus-Christ de cette manière est agréable à Dieu, et il est approuvé des hommes.

19 Recherchons donc les choses qui vont à la paix, et à nous édifier les uns les autres.

20 Ne détruis point l’œuvre de Dieu pour une viande. Il est vrai que toutes les choses sont nettes; mais il y a du péché pour celui qui donne du scandale en mangeant.

21 Il vaut mieux ne manger point de chair, ne boire point de vin, et s’abstenir de tout ce qui peut faire tomber ton frère, ou le scandaliser, ou l’affaiblir.

22 As-tu la foi? garde-la en toi-même devant Dieu. Heureux celui qui ne se condamne point soi-même en ce qu’il approuve!

23 Mais celui qui doute s’il est permis de manger d’une viande, est condamné s’il en mange, car il n’en mange point avec foi; or, tout ce que l’on ne fait pas avec foi, est un péché.
