1 And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and withal how he had slain all the prophets with the sword. 2 Then Jezebel sent a messenger unto Elijah, saying, So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I make not thy life as the life of one of them by to-morrow about this time. 3 And when he saw that, he arose, and went for his life, and came to Beer-sheba, which belongeth to Judah, and left his servant there. 4 But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper-tree: and he requested for himself that he might die, and said, It is enough; now, O Jehovah, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers. 5 And he lay down and slept under a juniper-tree; and, behold, an angel touched him, and said unto him, Arise and eat. 6 And he looked, and, behold, there was at his head a cake baken on the coals, and a cruse of water. And he did eat and drink, and laid him down again. 7 And the angel of Jehovah came again the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise and eat, because the journey is too great for thee. 8 And he arose, and did eat and drink, and went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights unto Horeb the mount of God.

9 And he came thither unto a cave, and lodged there; and, behold, the word of Jehovah came to him, and he said unto him, What doest thou here, Elijah? 10 And he said, I have been very jealous for Jehovah, the God of hosts; for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword: and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away. 11 And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before Jehovah. And, behold, Jehovah passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before Jehovah; but Jehovah was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but Jehovah was not in the earthquake: 12 and after the earthquake a fire; but Jehovah was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice. 13 And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entrance of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here, Elijah? 14 And he said, I have been very jealous for Jehovah, the God of hosts; for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.

15 And Jehovah said unto him, Go, return on thy way to the wilderness of Damascus: and when thou comest, thou shalt anoint Hazael to be king over Syria; 16 and Jehu the son of Nimshi shalt thou anoint to be king over Israel; and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah shalt thou anoint to be prophet in thy room. 17 And it shall come to pass, that him that escapeth from the sword of Hazael shall Jehu slay; and him that escapeth from the sword of Jehu shall Elisha slay. 18 Yet will I leave me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which hath not kissed him.

19 So he departed thence, and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing, with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and he with the twelfth: and Elijah passed over unto him, and cast his mantle upon him. 20 And he left the oxen, and ran after Elijah, and said, Let me, I pray thee, kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow thee. And he said unto him, Go back again; for what have I done to thee? 21 And he returned from following him, and took the yoke of oxen, and slew them, and boiled their flesh with the instruments of the oxen, and gave unto the people, and they did eat. Then he arose, and went after Elijah, and ministered unto him.

A ajuns la Beer-Șeba, care ține de Iuda, și și-a lăsat slujitorul acolo. 4 El s-a dus în pustie, unde, după un drum de o zi, a șezut sub un ienupăr și dorea*Num. 11:15.Iona 4:3,8. să moară zicând: „Destul! Acum, Doamne, ia-mi sufletul, căci nu sunt mai bun decât părinții mei." 5 S-a culcat și a adormit sub un ienupăr. Și, iată, l-a atins un înger și i-a zis: „Scoală-te și mănâncă." 6 El s-a uitat și, la căpătâiul lui, erau o turtă coaptă pe niște pietre încălzite și un urcior cu apă. A mâncat și a băut, apoi s-a culcat din nou. 7 Îngerul Domnului a venit a doua oară, l-a atins și a zis: „Scoală-te și mănâncă, fiindcă drumul pe care-l ai de făcut este prea lung pentru tine." 8 El s-a sculat, a mâncat și a băut și, cu puterea pe care i-a dat-o mâncarea aceasta, a mers patruzeci de zile și patruzeci*Exod 34:28.Deut. 9:9,18.Mat. 4:2. de nopți până la muntele lui Dumnezeu, Horeb*Exod 3:1..

9 Și acolo, Ilie a intrat într-o peșteră și a rămas în ea peste noapte. Și cuvântul Domnului i-a vorbit astfel: „Ce faci tu aici, Ilie?" 10 El a răspuns: „Am*Rom. 11:3. fost plin de râvnă*Num. 25:11,13.Ps. 69:9. pentru Domnul Dumnezeul oștirilor, căci copiii lui Israel au părăsit legământul Tău, au sfărâmat altarele Tale și au ucis cu sabia pe prorocii*Cap. 18:4. Tăi; am rămas*Cap. 18:22.Rom. 11:3. numai eu singur, și caută să-mi ia viața!" 11 Domnul i-a zis: „Ieși și stai pe munte*Exod 24:12. înaintea Domnului!" Și iată că Domnul a trecut pe lângă peșteră. Și înaintea Domnului a trecut un vânt*Ezec. 1:4;37:7. tare și puternic, care despica munții și sfărâma stâncile. Domnul nu era în vântul acela. Și, după vânt, a venit un cutremur de pământ. Domnul nu era în cutremurul de pământ. 12 Și după cutremurul de pământ, a venit un foc. Domnul nu era în focul acela. Și după foc, a venit un susur blând și subțire. 13 Când l-a auzit, Ilie și-a acoperit fața*Exod 3:6.Is. 6:2. cu mantaua, a ieșit și a stat la gura peșterii. Și*Vers. 9. un glas i-a vorbit zicând: „Ce faci tu aici, Ilie?" 14 El a*Vers. 10. răspuns: „Am fost plin de râvnă pentru Domnul Dumnezeul oștirilor, căci copiii lui Israel au părăsit legământul Tău, au sfărâmat altarele Tale și au ucis cu sabia pe prorocii Tăi; am rămas numai eu singur, și caută să-mi ia viața." 15 Domnul i-a zis: „Du-te, întoarce-te pe drumul tău prin pustie până la Damasc și, când*2 Împ. 8:12,13. vei ajunge, să ungi pe Hazael ca împărat al Siriei. 16 Să ungi și pe Iehu*2 Împ. 9:1-3., fiul lui Nimși, ca împărat al lui Israel și să ungi pe Elisei*Luca 4:27., fiul lui Șafat, din Abel-Mehola, ca proroc în locul tău. 17 Și se va întâmpla*2 Împ. 8:12;9:14;10:6;13:3. că pe cel ce va scăpa de sabia lui Hazael îl va omorî Iehu și pe cel ce va scăpa de sabia lui Iehu îl va omorî*Osea 6:5. Elisei. 18 Dar voi lăsa în Israel*Rom. 11:4. șapte mii de bărbați, și anume pe toți cei ce nu și-au plecat genunchii înaintea lui Baal și a căror gură*Osea 13:2. nu l-au sărutat."

19 Ilie a plecat de acolo și a găsit pe Elisei, fiul lui Șafat, arând. Înaintea lui erau douăsprezece perechi de boi, și el era cu a douăsprezecea. Ilie s-a apropiat de el și și-a aruncat mantaua pe el. 20 Elisei a părăsit boii, a alergat după Ilie și a zis: „Lasă-mă să sărut*Mat. 8:21,22.Luca 9:61,62. pe tatăl meu și pe mama mea și te voi urma." Ilie i-a răspuns: „Du-te și apoi întoarce-te, dar gândește-te la ce ți-am făcut." 21 După ce s-a depărtat de Ilie, s-a întors și a luat o pereche de boi pe care i-a adus jertfă; cu uneltele boilor le-a fiert*2 Sam. 24:22. carnea și a dat-o oamenilor s-o mănânce. Apoi s-a sculat, a urmat pe Ilie și a fost în slujba lui.
