1 And it came to pass after many days, that the word of Jehovah came to Elijah, in the third year, saying, Go, show thyself unto Ahab; and I will send rain upon the earth. 2 And Elijah went to show himself unto Ahab. And the famine was sore in Samaria. 3 And Ahab called Obadiah, who was over the household. (Now Obadiah feared Jehovah greatly: 4 for it was so, when Jezebel cut off the prophets of Jehovah, that Obadiah took a hundred prophets, and hid them by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water.) 5 And Ahab said unto Obadiah, Go through the land, unto all the fountains of water, and unto all the brooks: peradventure we may find grass and save the horses and mules alive, that we lose not all the beasts. 6 So they divided the land between them to pass throughout it: Ahab went one way by himself, and Obadiah went another way by himself.

7 And as Obadiah was in the way, behold, Elijah met him: and he knew him, and fell on his face, and said, Is it thou, my lord Elijah? 8 And he answered him, It is I: go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here. 9 And he said, Wherein have I sinned, that thou wouldest deliver thy servant into the hand of Ahab, to slay me? 10 As Jehovah thy God liveth, there is no nation or kingdom, whither my lord hath not sent to seek thee: and when they said, He is not here, he took an oath of the kingdom and nation, that they found thee not. 11 And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here. 12 And it will come to pass, as soon as I am gone from thee, that the Spirit of Jehovah will carry thee whither I know not; and so when I come and tell Ahab, and he cannot find thee, he will slay me: but I thy servant fear Jehovah from my youth. 13 Was it not told my lord what I did when Jezebel slew the prophets of Jehovah, how I hid a hundred men of Jehovah’s prophets by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water? 14 And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here; and he will slay me. 15 And Elijah said, As Jehovah of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, I will surely show myself unto him to-day.

16 So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him; and Ahab went to meet Elijah. 17 And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said unto him, Is it thou, thou troubler of Israel? 18 And he answered, I have not troubled Israel; but thou, and thy father’s house, in that ye have forsaken the commandments of Jehovah, and thou hast followed the Baalim. 19 Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel unto mount Carmel, and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the Asherah four hundred, that eat at Jezebel’s table.

20 So Ahab sent unto all the children of Israel, and gathered the prophets together unto mount Carmel. 21 And Elijah came near unto all the people, and said, How long go ye limping between the two sides? if Jehovah be God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word. 22 Then said Elijah unto the people, I, even I only, am left a prophet of Jehovah; but Baal’s prophets are four hundred and fifty men. 23 Let them therefore give us two bullocks; and let them choose one bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on the wood, and put no fire under; and I will dress the other bullock, and lay it on the wood, and put no fire under. 24 And call ye on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of Jehovah; and the God that answereth by fire, let him be God. And all the people answered and said, It is well spoken.

25 And Elijah said unto the prophets of Baal, Choose you one bullock for yourselves, and dress it first; for ye are many; and call on the name of your god, but put no fire under. 26 And they took the bullock which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, O Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any that answered. And they leaped about the altar which was made. 27 And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, Cry aloud; for he is a god: either he is musing, or he is gone aside, or he is on a journey, or peradventure he sleepeth and must be awaked. 28 And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lances, till the blood gushed out upon them. 29 And it was so, when midday was past, that they prophesied until the time of the offering of the evening oblation; but there was neither voice, nor any to answer, nor any that regarded.

30 And Elijah said unto all the people, Come near unto me; and all the people came near unto him. And he repaired the altar of Jehovah that was thrown down. 31 And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, unto whom the word of Jehovah came, saying, Israel shall be thy name. 32 And with the stones he built an altar in the name of Jehovah; and he made a trench about the altar, as great as would contain two measures of seed. 33 And he put the wood in order, and cut the bullock in pieces, and laid it on the wood. And he said, Fill four jars with water, and pour it on the burnt-offering, and on the wood. 34 And he said, Do it the second time; and they did it the second time. And he said, Do it the third time; and they did it the third time. 35 And the water ran round about the altar; and he filled the trench also with water. 36 And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the evening oblation, that Elijah the prophet came near, and said, O Jehovah, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these things at thy word. 37 Hear me, O Jehovah, hear me, that this people may know that thou, Jehovah, art God, and that thou hast turned their heart back again. 38 Then the fire of Jehovah fell, and consumed the burnt-offering, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench. 39 And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said, Jehovah, he is God; Jehovah, he is God. 40 And Elijah said unto them, Take the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape. And they took them; and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and slew them there.

41 And Elijah said unto Ahab, Get thee up, eat and drink; for there is the sound of abundance of rain. 42 So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he bowed himself down upon the earth, and put his face between his knees. 43 And he said to his servant, Go up now, look toward the sea. And he went up, and looked, and said, There is nothing. And he said, Go again seven times. 44 And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there ariseth a cloud out of the sea, as small as a man’s hand. And he said, Go up, say unto Ahab, Make ready thy chariot, and get thee down, that the rain stop thee not. 45 And it came to pass in a little while, that the heavens grew black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode, and went to Jezreel: 46 and the hand of Jehovah was on Elijah; and he girded up his loins, and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.

Era mare foamete în Samaria. 3 Și Ahab a trimis să cheme pe Obadia, mai-marele casei lui. Obadia se temea mult de Domnul. 4 De aceea, când a nimicit Izabela pe prorocii Domnului, Obadia a luat o sută de proroci, i-a ascuns câte cincizeci într-o peșteră și i-a hrănit cu pâine și cu apă. 5 Ahab a zis lui Obadia: „Haidem prin țară, pe la toate izvoarele de apă și pe la toate pâraiele; poate că vom găsi iarbă ca să păstrăm viața cailor și catârilor și să n-avem nevoie să omorâm vitele." 6 Și-au împărțit țara s-o cutreiere. Ahab a plecat singur pe un drum, și Obadia a plecat singur pe un alt drum. 7 Pe când era Obadia pe drum, iată că l-a întâlnit Ilie. Obadia, cunoscându-l, a căzut cu fața la pământ și a zis: „Tu ești, domnul meu Ilie?" 8 El i-a răspuns: „Eu sunt; du-te și spune stăpânului tău: ‘Iată că a venit Ilie!’" 9 Și Obadia a zis: „Ce păcat am săvârșit eu ca să dai pe robul tău în mâinile lui Ahab, ca să mă omoare? 10 Viu este Domnul că n-a rămas popor sau împărăție unde să nu fi trimis stăpânul meu să te caute și, când se spunea că nu ești acolo, punea pe împărăția și poporul acela să jure că nu te-au găsit. 11 Și acum zici: ‘Du-te și spune stăpânului tău: «Iată că a venit Ilie!»’ 12 Și apoi, când voi pleca de la tine, Duhul*2 Împ. 2:16.Ezec. 3:12,14.Mat. 4:1.Fapte 8:39. Domnului te va duce nu știu unde. Dacă m-aș duce să dau de știre lui Ahab și nu te-ar găsi, mă va omorî. Și totuși robul tău se teme de Domnul din tinerețea lui. 13 Nu s-a spus oare domnului meu ce am făcut când a ucis Izabela pe prorocii Domnului? Cum am ascuns o sută de proroci ai Domnului, câte cincizeci într-o peșteră, și i-am hrănit cu pâine și cu apă? 14 Și acum tu zici: ‘Du-te și spune stăpânului tău: «Iată că a venit Ilie!»’ El mă va ucide." 15 Dar Ilie a zis: „Viu este Domnul oștirilor, al cărui slujitor sunt, că astăzi mă voi înfățișa înaintea lui Ahab."

16 Obadia, ducându-se înaintea lui Ahab, l-a înștiințat despre lucrul acesta. Și Ahab s-a dus înaintea lui Ilie. 17 Abia l-a zărit Ahab pe Ilie și i-a zis: „Tu ești*Cap. 21:20. acela care nenorocești pe*Ios. 7:25.Fapte 16:20. Israel?" 18 Ilie a răspuns: „Nu eu nenorocesc pe Israel, ci tu și casa tatălui tău, fiindcă*2 Cron. 15:2. ați părăsit poruncile Domnului și v-ați dus după baali. 19 Strânge acum pe tot Israelul la mine, la muntele Carmel*Ios. 19:26., pe cei patru sute cincizeci de proroci ai lui Baal și pe cei patru sute*Cap. 16:33. de proroci ai Astarteei, care mănâncă la masa Izabelei." 20 Ahab a trimis soli la toți copiii lui Israel și a strâns*Cap. 22:6. pe proroci la muntele Carmel. 21 Atunci, Ilie s-a apropiat de tot poporul și a zis: „Până*2 Împ. 17:41.Mat. 6:24. când vreți să șchiopătați de amândouă picioarele? Dacă Domnul este Dumnezeu, mergeți după El, iar dacă este Baal, mergeți*Ios. 24:15. după Baal!" Poporul nu i-a răspuns nimic. 22 Și Ilie a zis poporului: „Eu singur*Cap. 19:10,14. am rămas din prorocii Domnului, pe când proroci*Vers. 19. ai lui Baal sunt patru sute cincizeci. 23 Să ni se dea doi junci. Ei să-și aleagă un junc, pe care să-l taie în bucăți și să-l pună pe lemne fără să pună foc. Și eu voi pregăti celălalt junc și-l voi pune pe lemne fără să pun foc. 24 Apoi, voi să chemați numele dumnezeului vostru, și eu voi chema Numele Domnului. Dumnezeul care va răspunde prin*Vers. 38.1 Cron. 21:26. foc, acela să fie adevăratul Dumnezeu." Și tot poporul a răspuns și a zis: „Bine!" 25 Ilie a zis prorocilor lui Baal: „Alegeți-vă un junc din cei doi, pregătiți-l voi întâi, căci sunteți mai mulți, și chemați numele dumnezeului vostru, dar să nu puneți foc." 26 Ei au luat juncul pe care li l-au dat și l-au pregătit. Și au chemat numele lui Baal de dimineață până la amiază, zicând: „Baale, auzi-ne!" Dar nu s-a auzit nici glas*Ps. 115:5.Ier. 10:5.1 Cor. 8:4;12:2., nici răspuns. Și săreau împrejurul altarului pe care-l făcuseră. 27 La amiază, Ilie și-a bătut joc de ei și a zis: „Strigați tare, fiindcă este dumnezeu; se gândește la ceva sau are treabă sau este în călătorie sau poate că doarme și se va trezi." 28 Ei au strigat tare și, după obiceiul lor, și-au făcut tăieturi*Lev. 19:28.Deut. 14:1. cu săbiile și cu sulițele, până ce a curs sânge pe ei. 29 Când a trecut amiaza, au aiurat până în clipa când se aducea jertfa de seară. Dar nu s-a auzit nici glas*Vers. 26., nici răspuns, nici semn de luare aminte. 30 Ilie a zis atunci întregului popor: „Apropiați-vă de mine!" Tot*Cap. 19:10. poporul s-a apropiat de el. Și Ilie a dres altarul Domnului, care fusese sfărâmat. 31 A luat douăsprezece pietre, după numărul semințiilor fiilor lui Iacov, căruia Domnul îi zisese: „Israel*Gen. 32:28;35:10.2 Împ. 17:34. îți va fi numele", 32 și a zidit cu pietrele acestea un altar în Numele Domnului. A făcut împrejurul altarului un șanț, în care încăpeau două măsuri de sămânță. 33 A așezat*Lev. 1:6-8. apoi lemnele, a tăiat juncul în bucăți și l-a pus pe lemne. Apoi a zis: „Umpleți patru vedre cu apă și vărsați-le*Jud. 6:20. pe arderea-de-tot și pe lemne." Și au făcut așa. 34 Apoi a zis: „Mai faceți lucrul acesta o dată." Și l-au făcut încă o dată. Apoi a zis: „Mai faceți-l și a treia oară." Și l-au făcut și a treia oară. 35 Apa curgea în jurul altarului și au umplut*Vers. 32,38. cu apă și șanțul. 36 În clipa când se aducea jertfa de seară, prorocul Ilie s-a apropiat și a zis: „Doamne, Dumnezeul*Exod 3:6. lui Avraam, Isaac și Israel! Fă să se*Cap. 8:43.2 Împ. 19:19.Ps. 83:18. știe astăzi că Tu ești Dumnezeu în Israel, că eu sunt slujitorul Tău și că toate aceste lucruri le-am făcut*Num. 16:28. după porunca Ta. 37 Ascultă-mă, Doamne, ascultă-mă, pentru ca să cunoască poporul acesta că Tu, Doamne, ești adevăratul Dumnezeu și să le întorci astfel inima spre bine!" 38 Atunci a căzut foc*Lev. 9:24.Jud. 6:21.1 Cron. 21:26.2 Cron. 7:1. de la Domnul și a mistuit arderea-de-tot, lemnele, pietrele și pământul și a supt și apa care era în șanț. 39 Când a văzut tot poporul lucrul acesta, au căzut cu fața la pământ și au zis: „Domnul*Vers. 24. este adevăratul Dumnezeu! Domnul este adevăratul Dumnezeu!" 40 „Puneți*2 Împ. 10:25. mâna pe prorocii lui Baal", le-a zis Ilie, „niciunul să nu scape!" Și au pus mâna pe ei. Ilie i-a coborât la pârâul Chison și i-a înjunghiat*Deut. 13:5;18:20. acolo.

41 Apoi Ilie a zis lui Ahab: „Suie-te de mănâncă și bea, căci se aude vuiet de ploaie." 42 Ahab s-a suit să mănânce și să bea. Dar Ilie s-a suit pe vârful Carmelului și, plecându-se*Iac. 5:17,18. la pământ, s-a așezat cu fața între genunchi 43 și a zis slujitorului său: „Suie-te și uită-te înspre mare." Slujitorul s-a suit, s-a uitat și a zis: „Nu este nimic!" Ilie a zis de șapte ori: „Du-te iarăși." 44 A șaptea oară, slujitorul a zis: „Iată că se ridică un mic nor din mare, ca o palmă de om." Ilie a zis: „Suie-te și spune lui Ahab: ‘Înhamă și coboară-te, ca să nu te oprească ploaia.’" 45 Peste câteva clipe, cerul s-a înnegrit de nori, a început vântul și a venit o ploaie mare. Ahab s-a suit în car și a plecat la Izreel. 46 Și mâna Domnului a venit peste Ilie, care și-a încins*2 Împ. 4:29;9:1. mijlocul și a alergat înaintea lui Ahab până la intrarea în Izreel.
