1 And it came to pass after these things, that Naboth the Jezreelite had a vineyard, which was in Jezreel, hard by the palace of Ahab king of Samaria. 2 And Ahab spake unto Naboth, saying, Give me thy vineyard, that I may have it for a garden of herbs, because it is near unto my house; and I will give thee for it a better vineyard than it: or, if it seem good to thee, I will give thee the worth of it in money. 3 And Naboth said to Ahab, Jehovah forbid it me, that I should give the inheritance of my fathers unto thee. 4 And Ahab came into his house heavy and displeased because of the word which Naboth the Jezreelite had spoken to him; for he had said, I will not give thee the inheritance of my fathers. And he laid him down upon his bed, and turned away his face, and would eat no bread.

5 But Jezebel his wife came to him, and said unto him, Why is thy spirit so sad, that thou eatest no bread? 6 And he said unto her, Because I spake unto Naboth the Jezreelite, and said unto him, Give me thy vineyard for money; or else, if it please thee, I will give thee another vineyard for it: and he answered, I will not give thee my vineyard. 7 And Jezebel his wife said unto him, Dost thou now govern the kingdom of Israel? arise, and eat bread, and let thy heart be merry: I will give thee the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite. 8 So she wrote letters in Ahab’s name, and sealed them with his seal, and sent the letters unto the elders and to the nobles that were in his city, and that dwelt with Naboth. 9 And she wrote in the letters, saying, Proclaim a fast, and set Naboth on high among the people: 10 and set two men, base fellows, before him, and let them bear witness against him, saying, Thou didst curse God and the king. And then carry him out, and stone him to death.

11 And the men of his city, even the elders and the nobles who dwelt in his city, did as Jezebel had sent unto them, according as it was written in the letters which she had sent unto them. 12 They proclaimed a fast, and set Naboth on high among the people. 13 And the two men, the base fellows, came in and sat before him: and the base fellows bare witness against him, even against Naboth, in the presence of the people, saying, Naboth did curse God and the king. Then they carried him forth out of the city, and stoned him to death with stones. 14 Then they sent to Jezebel, saying, Naboth is stoned, and is dead. 15 And it came to pass, when Jezebel heard that Naboth was stoned, and was dead, that Jezebel said to Ahab, Arise, take possession of the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, which he refused to give thee for money; for Naboth is not alive, but dead. 16 And it came to pass, when Ahab heard that Naboth was dead, that Ahab rose up to go down to the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, to take possession of it.

17 And the word of Jehovah came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying, 18 Arise, go down to meet Ahab king of Israel, who dwelleth in Samaria: behold, he is in the vineyard of Naboth, whither he is gone down to take possession of it. 19 And thou shalt speak unto him, saying, Thus saith Jehovah, Hast thou killed, and also taken possession? And thou shalt speak unto him, saying, Thus saith Jehovah, In the place where dogs licked the blood of Naboth shall dogs lick thy blood, even thine. 20 And Ahab said to Elijah, Hast thou found me, O mine enemy? And he answered, I have found thee, because thou hast sold thyself to do that which is evil in the sight of Jehovah. 21 Behold, I will bring evil upon thee, and will utterly sweep thee away and will cut off from Ahab every man-child, and him that is shut up and him that is left at large in Israel: 22 and I will make thy house like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and like the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah for the provocation wherewith thou hast provoked me to anger, and hast made Israel to sin. 23 And of Jezebel also spake Jehovah, saying, The dogs shall eat Jezebel by the rampart of Jezreel. 24 Him that dieth of Ahab in the city the dogs shall eat; and him that dieth in the field shall the birds of the heavens eat. 25 (But there was none like unto Ahab, who did sell himself to do that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah, whom Jezebel his wife stirred up. 26 And he did very abominably in following idols, according to all that the Amorites did, whom Jehovah cast out before the children of Israel.)

27 And it came to pass, when Ahab heard those words, that he rent his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his flesh, and fasted, and lay in sackcloth, and went softly. 28 And the word of Jehovah came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying, 29 Seest thou how Ahab humbleth himself before me? because he humbleth himself before me, I will not bring the evil in his days; but in his son’s day will I bring the evil upon his house.

1 După aceste lucruri, iată ce s-a întâmplat. Nabot, din Izreel, avea o vie la Izreel, lângă casa lui Ahab, împăratul Samariei. 2 Și Ahab a vorbit astfel lui Nabot: „Dă-mi mie via*1 Sam. 8:14. ta să fac din ea o grădină de verdețuri, căci este foarte aproape de casa mea. În locul ei îți voi da o vie mai bună sau, dacă-ți vine mai bine, îți voi plăti prețul ei în argint." 3 Dar Nabot a răspuns lui Ahab: „Să mă ferească Domnul să-ți dau moștenirea părinților mei!" 4 Ahab a intrat în casă trist și mâniat din pricina cuvintelor pe care i le spusese Nabot din Izreel: „Nu-ți voi da*Lev. 25:23.Num. 36:7.Ezec. 46:18. moștenirea părinților mei!" Și s-a culcat pe pat, și-a întors fața și n-a mâncat nimic. 5 Nevastă-sa, Izabela, a venit la el și i-a zis: „Pentru ce îți este tristă inima și nu mănânci?" 6 El i-a răspuns: „Am vorbit cu Nabot din Izreel și i-am zis: ‘Dă-mi via ta pe preț de argint sau, dacă vrei, îți voi da o altă vie în locul ei.’ Dar el a zis: ‘Nu pot să-ți dau via mea!’" 7 Atunci, Izabela, nevasta lui, i-a zis: „Oare nu domnești tu acum peste Israel? Scoală-te, ia și mănâncă și fii cu inima veselă, căci eu îți voi da via lui Nabot din Izreel!" 8 Și ea a scris niște scrisori în numele lui Ahab, le-a pecetluit cu pecetea lui Ahab și le-a trimis bătrânilor și dregătorilor care locuiau cu Nabot în cetatea lui. 9 Iată ce a scris în aceste scrisori: „Vestiți un post, puneți pe Nabot în fruntea poporului 10 și puneți-i în față doi oameni de nimic, care să mărturisească astfel împotriva lui: ‘Tu ai blestemat*Exod 22:28.Lev. 24:15,16.Fapte 6:11. pe Dumnezeu și pe împăratul!’ Apoi scoateți-l afară, împroșcați-l*Lev. 24:14. cu pietre și să moară." 11 Oamenii din cetatea lui Nabot, bătrânii și dregătorii care locuiau în cetate au făcut cum le spusese Izabela, după cum era scris în scrisorile pe care li le trimisese ea. 12 Au vestit*Is. 58:4. un post și au pus pe Nabot în fruntea poporului. 13 Cei doi oameni de nimic au venit și s-au așezat în fața lui și acești oameni răi au mărturisit așa înaintea poporului, împotriva lui Nabot: „Nabot a blestemat pe Dumnezeu și pe împăratul!" Apoi l-au scos*2 Împ. 9:26. afară din cetate, l-au împroșcat cu pietre și a murit. 14 Și au trimis să spună Izabelei: „Nabot a fost împroșcat cu pietre și a murit." 15 Când a auzit Izabela că Nabot fusese împroșcat cu pietre și că murise, a zis lui Ahab: „Scoală-te și ia în stăpânire via lui Nabot din Izreel, care n-a vrut să ți-o dea pe preț de argint, căci Nabot nu mai trăiește, a murit." 16 Ahab, auzind că a murit Nabot, s-a sculat să se coboare la via lui Nabot din Izreel ca s-o ia în stăpânire.

17 Atunci, cuvântul*Ps. 9:12. Domnului a vorbit lui Ilie, Tișbitul, astfel: 18 „Scoală-te și coboară-te înaintea lui Ahab, împăratul lui Israel, la Samaria*Cap. 13:32.2 Cron. 22:9.; iată-l, este în via lui Nabot, unde s-a coborât s-o ia în stăpânire. 19 Să-i spui: ‘Așa vorbește Domnul: «Nu ești tu un ucigaș și un hoț?»’ Și să-i mai spui: ‘Așa vorbește Domnul: «Chiar în locul*Cap. 22:38. unde au lins câinii sângele lui Nabot vor linge câinii și sângele tău.»’" 20 Ahab a zis lui Ilie: „M-ai găsit*Cap. 18:17., vrăjmașule?" Și el a răspuns: „Te-am găsit, pentru că te-ai vândut*2 Împ. 17:17.Rom. 7:14. ca să faci ce este rău înaintea Domnului. 21 Iată ce zice Domnul: ‘Voi aduce nenorocirea*Cap. 14:10.2 Împ. 9:8. peste tine; te voi mătura, voi nimici pe oricine este*1 Sam. 25:22. al lui Ahab, fie rob*Cap. 14:10., fie slobod în Israel, 22 și voi face casei*Cap. 15:29. tale cum am făcut casei lui Ieroboam, fiul lui Nebat, și casei lui Baeșa*Cap. 16:3,11., fiul lui Ahia, pentru că M-ai mâniat și ai făcut pe Israel să păcătuiască.’" 23 Domnul a vorbit și despre Izabela*2 Împ. 9:36. și a zis: „Câinii vor mânca pe Izabela lângă întăritura Izreelului. 24 Cine*Cap. 14:11;16:4. va muri în cetate din casa lui Ahab va fi mâncat de câini, iar cine va muri pe câmp va fi mâncat de păsările cerului." 25 N-a fost nimeni*Cap. 16:30. care să se fi vândut pentru ca să facă ce este rău înaintea Domnului ca Ahab, pe care nevastă-sa Izabela îl ațâța*Cap. 16:31. la aceasta. 26 El a lucrat în chipul cel mai urâcios, mergând după idoli, cum*Gen. 15:16.2 Împ. 21:11. făceau amoriții, pe care-i izgonise Domnul dinaintea copiilor lui Israel.

27 După ce a auzit cuvintele lui Ilie, Ahab și-a rupt hainele, și-a pus*Gen. 37:34. un sac pe trup și a postit: se culca cu sacul acesta și mergea încet. 28 Și cuvântul Domnului a vorbit lui Ilie, Tișbitul, astfel: 29 „Ai văzut cum s-a smerit Ahab înaintea Mea? Pentru că s-a smerit înaintea Mea, nu voi aduce nenorocirea în timpul vieții lui, ci în timpul vieții*2 Împ. 9:25. fiului său voi aduce nenorocirea casei lui!"
