1 Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign; and he reigned thirty and one years in Jerusalem: and his mother’s name was Jedidah the daughter of Adaiah of Bozkath. 2 And he did that which was right in the eyes of Jehovah, and walked in all the way of David his father, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left.

3 And it came to pass in the eighteenth year of king Josiah, that the king sent Shaphan, the son of Azaliah the son of Meshullam, the scribe, to the house of Jehovah, saying, 4 Go up to Hilkiah the high priest, that he may sum the money which is brought into the house of Jehovah, which the keepers of the threshold have gathered of the people: 5 and let them deliver it into the hand of the workmen that have the oversight of the house of Jehovah; and let them give it to the workmen that are in the house of Jehovah, to repair the breaches of the house, 6 unto the carpenters, and to the builders, and to the masons, and for buying timber and hewn stone to repair the house. 7 Howbeit there was no reckoning made with them of the money that was delivered into their hand; for they dealt faithfully.

8 And Hilkiah the high priest said unto Shaphan the scribe, I have found the book of the law in the house of Jehovah. And Hilkiah delivered the book to Shaphan, and he read it. 9 And Shaphan the scribe came to the king, and brought the king word again, and said, Thy servants have emptied out the money that was found in the house, and have delivered it into the hand of the workmen that have the oversight of the house of Jehovah. 10 And Shaphan the scribe told the king, saying, Hilkiah the priest hath delivered me a book. And Shaphan read it before the king. 11 And it came to pass, when the king had heard the words of the book of the law, that he rent his clothes. 12 And the king commanded Hilkiah the priest, and Ahikam the son of Shaphan, and Achbor the son of Micaiah, and Shaphan the scribe, and Asaiah the king’s servant, saying, 13 Go ye, inquire of Jehovah for me, and for the people, and for all Judah, concerning the words of this book that is found; for great is the wrath of Jehovah that is kindled against us, because our fathers have not hearkened unto the words of this book, to do according unto all that which is written concerning us.

14 So Hilkiah the priest, and Ahikam, and Achbor, and Shaphan, and Asaiah, went unto Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvah, the son of Harhas, keeper of the wardrobe (now she dwelt in Jerusalem in the second quarter); and they communed with her. 15 And she said unto them, Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel: Tell ye the man that sent you unto me, 16 Thus saith Jehovah, Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, and upon the inhabitants thereof, even all the words of the book which the king of Judah hath read. 17 Because they have forsaken me, and have burned incense unto other gods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the work of their hands, therefore my wrath shall be kindled against this place, and it shall not be quenched. 18 But unto the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of Jehovah, thus shall ye say to him, Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel: As touching the words which thou hast heard, 19 because thy heart was tender, and thou didst humble thyself before Jehovah, when thou heardest what I spake against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, that they should become a desolation and a curse, and hast rent thy clothes, and wept before me; I also have heard thee, saith Jehovah. 20 Therefore, behold, I will gather thee to thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered to thy grave in peace, neither shall thine eyes see all the evil which I will bring upon this place. And they brought the king word again.

Mama sa se chema Iedida, fata lui Adaia, din Boțcat*Ios. 15:39.. 2 El a făcut ce este bine înaintea Domnului și a umblat în toată calea tatălui său David; nu*Deut. 5:32. s-a abătut de la ea nici la dreapta, nici la stânga. 3 În anul*2 Cron. 34:8. al optsprezecelea al împăratului Iosia, împăratul a trimis în Casa Domnului pe Șafan, logofătul, fiul lui Ațalia, fiul lui Meșulam. El i-a zis: 4 „Suie-te la marele preot Hilchia și spune-i să strângă argintul adus*Cap. 12:4. în Casa Domnului, pe care l-au primit de la popor cei ce păzesc*Cap. 12:9.Ps. 84:10. pragul. 5 Să se dea argintul acesta în mâinile*Cap. 12:11,12,14. meșterilor însărcinați cu lucrarea în Casa Domnului. Și să-l dea celor ce lucrează la dregerea stricăciunilor Casei Domnului, 6 anume: dulgherilor, zidarilor și pietrarilor, pentru cumpărăturile de lemn și de pietre cioplite trebuitoare pentru dregerea stricăciunilor casei. 7 Dar să*Cap. 12:15. nu li se ceară socoteală de argintul dat în mâinile lor, căci ei lucrează cinstit."

8 Atunci, marele preot Hilchia a zis lui Șafan, logofătul: „Am găsit*Deut. 31:24.2 Cron. 34:14. cartea legii în Casa Domnului." Și Hilchia a dat cartea lui Șafan, și Șafan a citit-o. 9 Apoi, logofătul Șafan s-a dus să dea socoteală împăratului și a zis: „Slujitorii tăi au strâns argintul care se afla în casă și l-au dat în mâinile meșterilor însărcinați cu facerea lucrării în Casa Domnului." 10 Șafan, logofătul, a mai spus împăratului: „Preotul Hilchia mi-a dat o carte." Și Șafan a citit-o înaintea împăratului. 11 Când a auzit împăratul cuvintele din cartea legii, și-a sfâșiat hainele. 12 Și împăratul a dat porunca aceasta preotului Hilchia, lui Ahicam, fiul lui Șafan, lui Acbor*2 Cron. 34:20., fiul lui Mica, lui Șafan, logofătul, și lui Asaia, slujitorul împăratului: 13 „Duceți-vă și întrebați pe Domnul pentru mine, pentru popor și pentru Iuda, cu privire la cuvintele cărții acesteia care s-a găsit, căci mare este mânia*Deut. 29:27. Domnului, care s-a aprins împotriva noastră, pentru că părinții noștri n-au ascultat de cuvintele cărții acesteia și n-au împlinit tot ce ne este poruncit în ea." 14 Preotul Hilchia, Ahicam, Acbor, Șafan și Asaia s-au dus la prorocița Hulda, nevasta lui Șalum, fiul lui Ticva*2 Cron. 34:22., fiul lui Harhas, păzitorul veșmintelor. Ea locuia la Ierusalim, în cealaltă mahala a cetății. După ce i-au vorbit, 15 ea le-a zis: „Așa vorbește Domnul Dumnezeul lui Israel: ‘Spuneți omului care v-a trimis la mine: 16 «Așa vorbește Domnul: ‹Iată, voi trimite nenorociri*Deut. 29:27.Dan. 9:11-14. asupra locului acestuia și asupra locuitorilor lui, după toate cuvintele cărții pe care a citit-o împăratul lui Iuda. 17 Pentru că M-au*Deut. 29:25-27. părăsit și au adus tămâie altor dumnezei, mâniindu-Mă prin toate lucrările mâinilor lor, mânia Mea s-a aprins împotriva locului acestuia și nu se va stinge.›» 18 Dar să spuneți împăratului*2 Cron. 34:26. lui Iuda, care v-a trimis să întrebați pe Domnul: «Așa vorbește Domnul Dumnezeul lui Israel despre cuvintele pe care le-ai auzit: 19 ‹Pentru că ți s-a mișcat*Ps. 51:17.Is. 57:15. inima, pentru că te-ai smerit*1 Împ. 21:29. înaintea Domnului când ai auzit ce am spus împotriva acestui loc și împotriva locuitorilor lui, care vor ajunge de spaimă*Lev. 26:31,32. și de blestem*Ier. 26:6;44:22., și pentru că ți-ai sfâșiat hainele și ai plâns înaintea Mea, și Eu am auzit›, zice Domnul. 20 ‹De aceea, iată, te voi adăuga la părinții tăi, vei fi adăugat*Ps. 37:37.Is. 57:1,2. în pace în mormântul tău și nu-ți vor vedea ochii toate nenorocirile pe care le voi aduce asupra locului acestuia.›»’" Ei au adus împăratului răspunsul acesta.
