1 And when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down from the mount, the people gathered themselves together unto Aaron, and said unto him, Up, make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we know not what is become of him. 2 And Aaron said unto them, Break off the golden rings, which are in the ears of your wives, of your sons, and of your daughters, and bring them unto me. 3 And all the people brake off the golden rings which were in their ears, and brought them unto Aaron. 4 And he received it at their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool, and made it a molten calf: and they said, These are thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt. 5 And when Aaron saw this, he built an altar before it; and Aaron made proclamation, and said, To-morrow shall be a feast to Jehovah. 6 And they rose up early on the morrow, and offered burnt-offerings, and brought peace-offerings; and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play.

7 And Jehovah spake unto Moses, Go, get thee down; for thy people, that thou broughtest up out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves: 8 they have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them: they have made them a molten calf, and have worshipped it, and have sacrificed unto it, and said, These are thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt. 9 And Jehovah said unto Moses, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people: 10 now therefore let me alone, that my wrath may wax hot against them, and that I may consume them: and I will make of thee a great nation. 11 And Moses besought Jehovah his God, and said, Jehovah, why doth thy wrath wax hot against thy people, that thou hast brought forth out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand? 12 Wherefore should the Egyptians speak, saying, For evil did he bring them forth, to slay them in the mountains, and to consume them from the face of the earth? Turn from thy fierce wrath, and repent of this evil against thy people. 13 Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, thy servants, to whom thou swarest by thine own self, and saidst unto them, I will multiply your seed as the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have spoken of will I give unto your seed, and they shall inherit it for ever. 14 And Jehovah repented of the evil which he said he would do unto his people.

15 And Moses turned, and went down from the mount, with the two tables of the testimony in his hand; tables that were written on both their sides; on the one side and on the other were they written. 16 And the tables were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, graven upon the tables. 17 And when Joshua heard the noise of the people as they shouted, he said unto Moses, There is a noise of war in the camp. 18 And he said, It is not the voice of them that shout for mastery, neither is it the voice of them that cry for being overcome; but the noise of them that sing do I hear. 19 And it came to pass, as soon as he came nigh unto the camp, that he saw the calf and the dancing: and Moses’ anger waxed hot, and he cast the tables out of his hands, and brake them beneath the mount. 20 And he took the calf which they had made, and burnt it with fire, and ground it to powder, and strewed it upon the water, and made the children of Israel drink of it.

21 And Moses said unto Aaron, What did this people unto thee, that thou hast brought a great sin upon them? 22 And Aaron said, Let not the anger of my lord wax hot: thou knowest the people, that they are set on evil. 23 For they said unto me, Make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we know not what is become of him. 24 And I said unto them, Whosoever hath any gold, let them break it off: so they gave it me; and I cast it into the fire, and there came out this calf.

25 And when Moses saw that the people were broken loose, (for Aaron had let them loose for a derision among their enemies,) 26 then Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said, Whoso is on Jehovah’s side, let him come unto me. And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves together unto him. 27 And he said unto them, Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, Put ye every man his sword upon his thigh, and go to and fro from gate to gate throughout the camp, and slay every man his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbor. 28 And the sons of Levi did according to the word of Moses: and there fell of the people that day about three thousand men. 29 And Moses said, Consecrate yourselves to-day to Jehovah, yea, every man against his son, and against his brother; that he may bestow upon you a blessing this day.

30 And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses said unto the people, Ye have sinned a great sin: and now I will go up unto Jehovah; peradventure I shall make atonement for your sin. 31 And Moses returned unto Jehovah, and said, Oh, this people have sinned a great sin, and have made them gods of gold. 32 Yet now, if thou wilt forgive their sin—; and if not, blot me, I pray thee, out of thy book which thou hast written. 33 And Jehovah said unto Moses, Whosoever hath sinned against me, him will I blot out of my book. 34 And now go, lead the people unto the place of which I have spoken unto thee: behold, mine angel shall go before thee; nevertheless in the day when I visit, I will visit their sin upon them. 35 And Jehovah smote the people, because they made the calf, which Aaron made.

Și ei au zis: „Israele, iată dumnezeul tău care te-a scos din țara Egiptului!" 5 Când a văzut Aaron lucrul acesta, a zidit un altar înaintea lui și a*Lev. 23:2,4,21,37.2 Împ. 10:29.2 Cron. 30:5. strigat: „Mâine va fi o sărbătoare în cinstea Domnului!" 6 A doua zi, s-au sculat dis-de-dimineață și au adus arderi-de-tot și jertfe de mulțumire*1 Cor. 10:7.. Poporul a șezut de a mâncat și a băut; apoi s-au sculat să joace.

7 Domnul a zis lui Moise*Vers. 1. Cap. 33:1.Deut. 9:12.Dan. 9:24.: „Scoală și coboară-te, căci poporul tău, pe care l-ai scos din țara Egiptului, s-a*Gen. 6:11,12.Deut. 4:16;32:5.Jud. 2:19.Osea 9:9. stricat. 8 Foarte curând s-au abătut de la calea pe care le-o*Cap. 20:3,4,23.Deut. 9:16. poruncisem Eu; și-au făcut un vițel turnat, s-au închinat până la pământ înaintea lui, i-au adus jertfe și au zis: ‘Israele*1 Împ. 12:28., iată dumnezeul tău care te-a scos din țara Egiptului!’" 9 Domnul a zis lui Moise: „Văd*Cap. 33:3,5;34:9.Deut. 9:6,13;31:27.2 Cron. 30:8.Is. 48:4.Fapte 7:51. că poporul acesta este un popor încăpățânat. 10 Acum*Deut. 9:14,19., lasă-Mă; mânia*Cap. 22:24. Mea are să se aprindă împotriva lor și-i voi mistui, dar pe*Num. 14:12. tine te voi face strămoșul unui neam mare." 11 Moise*Deut. 9:18,26-29.Ps. 74:1,2;106:23. s-a rugat Domnului Dumnezeului său și a zis: „Pentru ce să se aprindă, Doamne, mânia Ta împotriva poporului Tău, pe care l-ai scos din țara Egiptului cu mare putere și cu mână tare? 12 Pentru ce*Num. 14:13.Deut. 9:28;32:27. să zică egiptenii: ‘Spre nenorocirea lor i-a scos, ca să-i omoare prin munți și ca să-i șteargă de pe fața pământului’? Întoarce-Te din iuțeala mâniei Tale și*Vers. 14. lasă-Te de răul acesta pe care vrei să-l faci poporului Tău. 13 Adu-ți aminte de Avraam, de Isaac și de Israel, robii Tăi, cărora le-ai spus, jurându-Te*Gen. 22:16.Evr. 6:13. pe Tine Însuți: ‘Voi*Gen. 12:7;13:15;15:7,18;26:4;28:13;35:11,12. înmulți sămânța voastră ca stelele cerului, voi da urmașilor voștri toată țara aceasta de care am vorbit, și ei o vor stăpâni în veac.’" 14 Și Domnul S-a*Deut. 32:26.2 Sam. 24:16.1 Cron. 21:15.Ps. 106:45.Ier. 18:8;26:13,19.Ioel 2:13.Iona 3:10;4:2. lăsat de răul pe care spusese că vrea să-l facă poporului Său.

15 Moise*Deut. 9:15. s-a întors și s-a coborât de pe munte cu cele două table ale mărturiei în mână. Tablele erau scrise pe amândouă părțile, pe o parte și pe alta. 16 Tablele*Cap. 31:18. erau lucrarea lui Dumnezeu și scrisul era scrisul lui Dumnezeu, săpat pe table. 17 Iosua a auzit glasul poporului, care scotea strigăte, și a zis lui Moise: „În tabără este un strigăt de război!" 18 Moise a răspuns: „Strigătul acesta nu-i nici strigăt de biruitori, nici strigăt de biruiți; ce aud eu este glasul unor oameni care cântă!" 19 Și, pe când se apropia de tabără, a văzut*Deut. 9:16,17. vițelul și jocurile. Moise s-a aprins de mânie, a aruncat tablele din mână și le-a sfărâmat de piciorul muntelui. 20 A luat*Deut. 9:21. vițelul pe care-l făcuseră ei și l-a ars în foc; l-a prefăcut în cenușă, a presărat cenușa pe fața apei și a dat-o copiilor lui Israel s-o bea. 21 Moise a zis lui Aaron*Gen. 20:9;26:10.: „Ce ți-a făcut poporul acesta, de ai adus asupra lui un păcat atât de mare?" 22 Aaron a răspuns: „Să nu se aprindă de mânie domnul meu! Tu singur*Cap. 14:11;15:24;16:2,20,28;17:2,4. știi că poporul acesta este pornit la rău. 23 Ei mi-au zis*Vers. 1.: ‘Fă-ne un dumnezeu care să meargă înaintea noastră; căci Moise, omul acela care ne-a scos din țara Egiptului, nu știm ce s-a făcut!’ 24 Eu le-am zis: ‘Cine are aur să-l scoată!’ Și mi l-au dat; l-am aruncat în foc și din el a*Vers. 1. ieșit vițelul acesta."

25 Moise a văzut că poporul era fără frâu, căci Aaron îl făcuse să fie fără frâu*2 Cron. 28:19., spre batjocura vrăjmașilor săi; 26 s-a așezat la ușa taberei și a zis: „Cine este pentru Domnul să vină la mine!" Și toți copiii lui Levi s-au strâns la el. 27 El le-a zis: „Așa vorbește Domnul Dumnezeul lui Israel: ‘Fiecare din voi să se încingă cu sabia; mergeți și străbateți tabăra de la o poartă la alta și fiecare să*Num. 25:5.Deut. 33:9. omoare pe fratele, pe prietenul și pe ruda sa.’" 28 Copiii lui Levi au făcut după porunca lui Moise și aproape trei mii de oameni au pierit în ziua aceea din popor. 29 Moise*Num. 25:11-13.Deut. 13:6-11;33:9,10.1 Sam. 15:18,22.Prov. 21:3.Zah. 13:3.Mat. 10:37. a zis: „Predați-vă azi în slujba Domnului, chiar cu jertfa fiului și fratelui vostru, pentru ca binecuvântarea Lui să vină astăzi peste voi!"

30 A doua zi, Moise a zis poporului*1 Sam. 12:20,23.Luca 15:18.: „Ați făcut un păcat foarte mare. Am să mă sui acum la Domnul: poate*2 Sam. 16:12.Amos 5:15. că voi*Num. 25:13. căpăta iertare pentru păcatul vostru." 31 Moise s-a*Deut. 9:18. întors la Domnul și a zis: „Ah, poporul acesta a făcut un păcat foarte mare! Și-au făcut un dumnezeu*Cap. 20:2. de aur. 32 Iartă-le acum păcatul! Dacă nu, atunci șterge-mă*Ps. 69:28.Rom. 9:3. din*Ps. 56:8;139:16.Dan. 12:1.Filip. 4:3.Apoc. 3:5;13:8;17:8;20:12,15;21:27;22:19. cartea Ta pe care ai scris-o!" 33 Domnul a zis lui Moise: „Pe*Lev. 23:30.Ezec. 18:4. cel ce a păcătuit împotriva Mea, pe acela îl voi șterge din cartea Mea. 34 Du-te dar și du poporul unde ți-am spus. Iată*Cap. 33:2.Num. 20:16., Îngerul Meu va merge înaintea ta, dar în ziua*Deut. 32:35.Amos 3:14.Rom. 2:5,6. răzbunării Mele, îi voi pedepsi pentru păcatul lor!" 35 Domnul a lovit cu urgie poporul, pentru că*2 Sam. 12:9.Fapte 7:41. făcuse vițelul făurit de Aaron.
