1 Man, that is born of a woman,

Is of few days, and full of trouble.

2 He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down:

He fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not.

3 And dost thou open thine eyes upon such a one,

And bringest me into judgment with thee?

4 Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one.

5 Seeing his days are determined,

The number of his months is with thee,

And thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass;

6 Look away from him, that he may rest,

Till he shall accomplish, as a hireling, his day.

7 For there is hope of a tree,

If it be cut down, that it will sprout again,

And that the tender branch thereof will not cease.

8 Though the root thereof wax old in the earth,

And the stock thereof die in the ground;

9 Yet through the scent of water it will bud,

And put forth boughs like a plant.

10 But man dieth, and is laid low:

Yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where is he?

11 As the waters fail from the sea,

And the river wasteth and drieth up;

12 So man lieth down and riseth not:

Till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake,

Nor be roused out of their sleep.

13 Oh that thou wouldest hide me in Sheol,

That thou wouldest keep me secret, until thy wrath be past,

That thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me!

14 If a man die, shall he live again?

All the days of my warfare would I wait,

Till my release should come.

15 Thou wouldest call, and I would answer thee:

Thou wouldest have a desire to the work of thy hands.

16 But now thou numberest my steps:

Dost thou not watch over my sin?

17 My transgression is sealed up in a bag,

And thou fastenest up mine iniquity.

18 But the mountain falling cometh to nought;

And the rock is removed out of its place;

19 The waters wear the stones;

The overflowings thereof wash away the dust of the earth:

So thou destroyest the hope of man.

20 Thou prevailest for ever against him, and he passeth;

Thou changest his countenance, and sendest him away.

21 His sons come to honor, and he knoweth it not;

And they are brought low, but he perceiveth it not of them.

22 But his flesh upon him hath pain,

And his soul within him mourneth.

Și pe mine mă tragi*Ps. 143:2. la judecată cu Tine!

4 Cum ar putea*Gen. 5:3.Ps. 51:5.Ioan 3:6.Rom. 5:12.Efes. 2:3. să iasă dintr-o ființă necurată un om curat?

Nu poate să iasă niciunul.

5 Dacă*Cap. 7:1. zilele lui sunt hotărâte,

dacă i-ai numărat lunile,

dacă i-ai însemnat hotarul pe care nu-l va putea trece,

6 întoarce-Ți*Cap. 7:16,19;10:20.Ps. 39:13. măcar privirile de la el și dă-i răgaz,

să aibă măcar bucuria pe care o are simbriașul*Cap. 7:1. la sfârșitul zilei.

7 Un copac și tot are nădejde,

căci, când este tăiat*Vers. 14., odrăslește din nou

și iar dă lăstari.

8 Când i-a îmbătrânit rădăcina în pământ,

când îi piere trunchiul în țărână,

9 înverzește iarăși de mirosul apei

și dă ramuri de parcă ar fi sădit din nou.

10 Dar omul, când moare, rămâne întins.

Omul, când își dă sufletul, unde mai este?

11 Cum pier apele din lacuri

și cum seacă și se usucă râurile,

12 așa se culcă și omul și nu se mai scoală;

cât*Ps. 102:26.Is. 51:6;65:17;66:22.Fapte 3:21.Rom. 8:20.2 Pet. 3:7,10,11.Apoc. 20:11;21:1. vor fi cerurile, nu se mai deșteaptă

și nu se mai scoală din somnul lui.

13 Ah, de m-ai ascunde în Locuința morților,

de m-ai acoperi până-Ți va trece mânia

și de mi-ai rândui o vreme când Îți

vei aduce iarăși aminte de mine!

14 Dacă omul, odată mort, ar putea să mai învieze,

aș*Cap. 13:15. mai trage nădejde în tot timpul suferințelor mele,

până*Vers. 7. mi se va schimba starea în care mă găsesc.

15 Atunci m-ai*Cap. 13:22. chema și Ți-aș răspunde

și Ți-ar fi dor de făptura mâinilor Tale.

16 Dar astăzi îmi numeri*Cap. 10:6,14;13:27;31:4;34:21.Ps. 56:8;139:1-3.Prov. 5:21.Ier. 32:19. pașii,

ai ochiul asupra păcatelor mele;

17 călcările mele de lege*Deut. 32:34.Osea 13:12. sunt pecetluite într-un mănunchi

și născocești fărădelegi în sarcina mea.

18 Cum se prăbușește muntele și piere,

cum piere stânca din locul ei,

19 cum este mâncată piatra de ape

și cum este luat pământul de râu,

așa nimicești Tu nădejdea omului.

20 Îl urmărești întruna și se duce;

Îi schimonosești fața și apoi îi dai drumul.

21 De ajung fiii lui la cinste, el*Ecl. 9:5.Is. 63:16. nu știe nimic;

de sunt înjosiți, habar n-are.

22 Numai pentru el simte durere în trupul lui,

numai pentru el simte întristare în sufletul lui."
