1 Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said,

2 Should a wise man make answer with vain knowledge,

And fill himself with the east wind?

3 Should he reason with unprofitable talk,

Or with speeches wherewith he can do no good?

4 Yea, thou doest away with fear,

And hinderest devotion before God.

5 For thine iniquity teacheth thy mouth,

And thou choosest the tongue of the crafty.

6 Thine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I;

Yea, thine own lips testify against thee.

7 Art thou the first man that was born?

Or wast thou brought forth before the hills?

8 Hast thou heard the secret counsel of God?

And dost thou limit wisdom to thyself?

9 What knowest thou, that we know not?

What understandest thou, which is not in us?

10 With us are both the gray-headed and the very aged men,

Much elder than thy father.

11 Are the consolations of God too small for thee,

Even the word that is gentle toward thee?

12 Why doth thy heart carry thee away?

And why do thine eyes flash,

13 That against God thou turnest thy spirit,

And lettest words go out of thy mouth?

14 What is man, that he should be clean?

And he that is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?

15 Behold, he putteth no trust in his holy ones;

Yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight:

16 How much less one that is abominable and corrupt,

A man that drinketh iniquity like water!

17 I will show thee, hear thou me;

And that which I have seen I will declare

18 (Which wise men have told

From their fathers, and have not hid it;

19 Unto whom alone the land was given,

And no stranger passed among them):

20 The wicked man travaileth with pain all his days,

Even the number of years that are laid up for the oppressor.

21 A sound of terrors is in his ears;

In prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him.

22 He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness,

And he is waited for of the sword.

23 He wandereth abroad for bread, saying, Where is it?

He knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.

24 Distress and anguish make him afraid;

They prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle.

25 Because he hath stretched out his hand against God,

And behaveth himself proudly against the Almighty;

26 He runneth upon him with a stiff neck,

With the thick bosses of his bucklers;

27 Because he hath covered his face with his fatness,

And gathered fat upon his loins;

28 And he hath dwelt in desolate cities,

In houses which no man inhabited,

Which were ready to become heaps;

29 He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue,

Neither shall their possessions be extended on the earth.

30 He shall not depart out of darkness;

The flame shall dry up his branches,

And by the breath of God’s mouth shall he go away.

31 Let him not trust in vanity, deceiving himself;

For vanity shall be his recompense.

32 It shall be accomplished before his time,

And his branch shall not be green.

33 He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine,

And shall cast off his flower as the olive-tree.

34 For the company of the godless shall be barren,

And fire shall consume the tents of bribery.

35 They conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity,

And their heart prepareth deceit.

2 „Se cade să dea înțeleptul ca răspuns înțelepciune deșartă?

Sau să-și umfle pieptul cu vânt de răsărit?

3 Să se apere prin cuvinte care n-ajută la nimic

și prin cuvântări care nu slujesc la nimic?

4 Tu nimicești chiar și frica de Dumnezeu,

nimicești orice simțire de evlavie față de Dumnezeu.

5 Nelegiuirea ta îți cârmuiește gura

și împrumuți vorbirea oamenilor vicleni.

6 Nu eu, ci gura*Luca 19:22. ta te osândește,

buzele tale mărturisesc împotriva ta.

7 Tu ești omul care s-a născut întâi?

Te-ai născut*Ps. 90:2.Prov. 8:25. tu înaintea dealurilor?

8 Ai fost tu*Rom. 11:34.1 Cor. 2:11. la sfaturile lui Dumnezeu

și ai sorbit din ele înțelepciune pentru tine?

9 Ce*Cap. 13:2. știi tu și să nu știm și noi?

Ce cunoștință ai tu pe care să n-o avem și noi?

10 Între*Cap. 32:6,7. noi sunt peri albi, bătrâni,

oameni mai înziliți decât tatăl tău.

11 Puțin lucru sunt mângâierile lui Dumnezeu pentru tine

și cuvintele care-ți vorbesc atât de blând…?

12 Încotro te trage inima

și ce înseamnă această privire țintă a ochilor tăi?

13 Ce, împotriva lui Dumnezeu îți îndrepți tu mânia

și-ți ies din gură cuvinte ca acestea?

14 Ce*1 Împ. 8:46.1 Cron. 6:36. Cap. 14:4.Ps. 14:3.Prov. 20:9.Ecl. 7:20.1 Ioan 1:8,10. este omul, ca să fie curat?

Și poate cel născut din femeie să fie fără prihană?

15 Dacă n-are încredere Dumnezeu nici în sfinții*Cap. 4:18;25:5. Săi,

dacă nici cerurile nu sunt curate înaintea Lui,

16 cu cât*Cap. 4:19.Ps. 14:3;53:3. mai puțin ființa urâcioasă și stricată – omul,

care*Cap. 34:7.Prov. 19:28. bea nelegiuirea ca apa!

17 Vreau să te învăț, ascultă-mă!

Voi istorisi ce am văzut,

18 ce au arătat înțelepții,

ce au descoperit ei, auzind de la părinții*Cap. 8:8. lor,

19 cărora singuri li se dăduse țara

și printre care niciun străin*Ioel 3:17. nu venise încă.

20 Omul cel rău își duce în neliniște toate zilele vieții,

toți*Ps. 90:12. anii de care are parte cel nelegiuit.

21 Țipete de spaimă răsună la urechile lui:

În mijlocul fericirii*1 Tes. 5:3. lui, pustiitorul se va arunca asupra lui.

22 El nu trage nădejde să scape de întuneric,

vede sabia care-l amenință;

23 aleargă*Ps. 59:15;109:10. încoace și încolo să caute pâine,

știe că-l așteaptă ziua întunericului*Cap. 18:12..

24 Necazul și neliniștea îl înspăimântă

și se aruncă asupra lui ca un împărat gata de luptă.

25 Căci a ridicat mâna împotriva lui Dumnezeu,

s-a împotrivit Celui Atotputernic

26 și a avut îndrăzneala să se năpustească asupra Lui

cu partea cea mai tare a scuturilor lui.

27 Avea fața acoperită cu grăsime,

coapsele încărcate cu osânză

28 și locuia în cetăți nimicite,

în case părăsite,

sortite să fie dărâmate.

29 Nu se va mai îmbogăți,

averea nu-i va crește

și avuția nu se va mai întinde pe pământ.

30 Nu va putea ieși din întuneric,

flacăra îi va arde mlădițele,

și Dumnezeu îl va pierde*Cap. 4:9. cu suflarea gurii Lui.

31 Dacă se încrede*Is. 59:4. în rău, se înșală,

căci răul îi va fi răsplata.

32 Ea va veni înainte*Cap. 22:16.Ps. 55:23. de capătul zilelor lui,

și ramura lui nu va mai înverzi.

33 Va fi ca o viță despuiată de roadele ei încă verzi,

ca un măslin ale cărui flori au căzut.

34 Căci casa celui nelegiuit va ajunge stearpă

și cortul omului stricat îl va mânca focul.

35 El zămislește*Ps. 7:14.Is. 59:4.Osea 10:13. răul și naște răul;

în sânul lui coace roade care-l înșală."
