1 Then Jehovah answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said,

2 Who is this that darkeneth counsel

By words without knowledge?

3 Gird up now thy loins like a man;

For I will demand of thee, and declare thou unto me.

4 Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth?

Declare, if thou hast understanding.

5 Who determined the measures thereof, if thou knowest?

Or who stretched the line upon it?

6 Whereupon were the foundations thereof fastened?

Or who laid the corner-stone thereof,

7 When the morning stars sang together,

And all the sons of God shouted for joy?

8 Or who shut up the sea with doors,

When it brake forth, as if it had issued out of the womb;

9 When I made clouds the garment thereof,

And thick darkness a swaddling-band for it,

10 And marked out for it my bound,

And set bars and doors,

11 And said, Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further;

And here shall thy proud waves be stayed?

12 Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days began,

And caused the dayspring to know its place;

13 That it might take hold of the ends of the earth,

And the wicked be shaken out of it?

14 It is changed as clay under the seal;

And all things stand forth as a garment:

15 And from the wicked their light is withholden,

And the high arm is broken.

16 Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea?

Or hast thou walked in the recesses of the deep?

17 Have the gates of death been revealed unto thee?

Or hast thou seen the gates of the shadow of death?

18 Hast thou comprehended the earth in its breadth?

Declare, if thou knowest it all.

19 Where is the way to the dwelling of light?

And as for darkness, where is the place thereof,

20 That thou shouldest take it to the bound thereof,

And that thou shouldest discern the paths to the house thereof?

21 Doubtless, thou knowest, for thou wast then born,

And the number of thy days is great!

22 Hast thou entered the treasuries of the snow,

Or hast thou seen the treasures of the hail,

23 Which I have reserved against the time of trouble,

Against the day of battle and war?

24 By what way is the light parted,

Or the east wind scattered upon the earth?

25 Who hath cleft a channel for the waterflood,

Or the way for the lightning of the thunder;

26 To cause it to rain on a land where no man is;

On the wilderness, wherein there is no man;

27 To satisfy the waste and desolate ground,

And to cause the tender grass to spring forth?

28 Hath the rain a father?

Or who hath begotten the drops of dew?

29 Out of whose womb came the ice?

And the hoary frost of heaven, who hath gendered it?

30 The waters hide themselves and become like stone,

And the face of the deep is frozen.

31 Canst thou bind the cluster of the Pleiades,

Or loose the bands of Orion?

32 Canst thou lead forth the Mazzaroth in their season?

Or canst thou guide the Bear with her train?

33 Knowest thou the ordinances of the heavens?

Canst thou establish the dominion thereof in the earth?

34 Canst thou lift up thy voice to the clouds,

That abundance of waters may cover thee?

35 Canst thou send forth lightnings, that they may go,

And say unto thee, Here we are?

36 Who hath put wisdom in the inward parts?

Or who hath given understanding to the mind?

37 Who can number the clouds by wisdom?

Or who can pour out the bottles of heaven,

38 When the dust runneth into a mass,

And the clods cleave fast together?

39 Canst thou hunt the prey for the lioness,

Or satisfy the appetite of the young lions,

40 When they couch in their dens,

And abide in the covert to lie in wait?

41 Who provideth for the raven his prey,

When his young ones cry unto God,

And wander for lack of food?

Spune, dacă ai pricepere.

5 Cine i-a hotărât măsurile, știi?

Sau cine a întins frânghia de măsurat peste el?

6 Pe ce sunt sprijinite temeliile lui?

Sau cine i-a pus piatra din capul unghiului

7 atunci când stelele dimineții izbucneau în cântări de bucurie

și când toți*Cap. 1:6. fiii lui Dumnezeu scoteau strigăte de veselie?

când s-a aruncat din pântecele mamei ei,

9 când i-am făcut haină din nori

și scutece din întuneric,

10 când i-am pus hotar*Cap. 26:10.

și când i-am pus zăvoare și porți,

11 când am zis: ‘Până aici să vii, să nu treci mai departe;

aici să ți se oprească*Ps. 89:9;93:4. mândria valurilor tale’?

12 De când ești, ai poruncit*Ps. 74:16;148:5. tu dimineții?

Ai arătat zorilor locul lor,

13 ca să apuce capetele pământului

și să scuture pe cei răi*Ps. 104:35. de pe el?

14 Ca pământul să se schimbe ca lutul pe care se pune o pecete

și toate lucrurile să se arate îmbrăcate ca în haina lor adevărată?

15 Pentru ca cei răi să fie lipsiți de lumina*Cap. 18:5. lor

și brațul*Ps. 10:15. care se ridică să fie zdrobit?

16 Ai pătruns tu până la izvoarele*Ps. 77:19. mării?

Sau te-ai plimbat tu prin fundurile adâncului?

17 Ți s-au deschis porțile*Ps. 9:13. morții?

Sau ai văzut tu porțile umbrei morții?

18 Ai cuprins tu cu privirea întinderea pământului?

Vorbește, dacă știi toate aceste lucruri.

19 Unde este drumul care duce la locașul luminii?

Și întunericul unde își are locuința?

20 Poți să le urmărești până la hotarul lor

și să cunoști cărările locuinței lor?

21 Știi, căci atunci erai născut

și numărul zilelor tale este mare!

22 Ai ajuns tu până la cămările*Ps. 135:7. zăpezii?

Ai văzut tu cămările grindinei,

23 pe care*Exod 9:18.Ios. 10:11.Is. 30:30.Ezec. 13:11,13.Apoc. 16:21. le păstrez pentru vremurile de strâmtorare,

pentru zilele de război și de bătălie?

24 Pe ce cale se împarte lumina?

Și pe ce cale se împrăștie vântul de răsărit pe pământ?

25 Cine a deschis*Cap. 28:26. un loc de scurgere ploii

și a însemnat drumul fulgerului și al tunetului,

26 pentru ca să cadă ploaia pe un pământ fără locuitori,

pe un pustiu unde nu sunt oameni;

27 pentru ca să adape*Ps. 107:35. locurile pustii și uscate

și ca să facă să încolțească și să răsară iarba?

28 Are ploaia*Ps. 147:8.Ier. 14:22. tată?

Cine dă naștere picăturilor de rouă?

29 Din al cui sân iese gheața

și cine naște promoroaca*Ps. 147:16. cerului,

30 ca apele să se îngroașe ca o piatră

și fața adâncului să*Cap. 37:10. se întărească?

31 Poți să înnozi tu legăturile Găinușei*Cap. 9:9.Amos 5:8.

sau să dezlegi frânghiile Orionului?

32 Tu faci să iasă la vremea lor semnele zodiacului

și tu cârmuiești Ursa-Mare cu puii ei?

33 Cunoști tu legile*Ier. 31:35. cerului?

Sau tu îi orânduiești stăpânirea pe pământ?

34 Îți înalți tu glasul până la nori,

ca să chemi să te acopere râuri de ape?

35 Poți tu să arunci fulgerele ca să plece?

Îți zic ele: ‘Iată-ne’?

36 Cine*Cap. 32:8.Ps. 51:6.Ecl. 2:26. a pus înțelepciunea în negura norilor

sau cine a dat pricepere întocmirii văzduhului?

37 Cine poate să numere norii cu înțelepciune

și să verse burdufurile cerurilor,

38 pentru ca să înceapă pulberea să facă noroi

și bulgării de pământ să se lipească împreună?

39 Tu*Ps. 104:21;145:15. izgonești prada pentru leoaică

și tu potolești foamea puilor de lei

40 când stau ghemuiți în vizuina lor,

când stau la pândă în culcușul lor?

41 Cine pregătește corbului*Ps. 147:9.Mat. 6:26. hrana,

când puii lui strigă spre Dumnezeu,

când umblă rătăciți și flămânzi?
