1 Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judæa in the days of Herod the king, behold, Wise-men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying, 2 Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we saw his star in the east, and are come to worship him. 3 And when Herod the king heard it, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. 4 And gathering together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ should be born. 5 And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judæa: for thus it is written through the prophet,

6 And thou Bethlehem, land of Judah,

Art in no wise least among the princes of Judah:

For out of thee shall come forth a governor,

Who shall be shepherd of my people Israel.

7 Then Herod privily called the Wise-men, and learned of them exactly what time the star appeared. 8 And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search out exactly concerning the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word, that I also may come and worship him. 9 And they, having heard the king, went their way; and lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. 10 And when they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. 11 And they came into the house and saw the young child with Mary his mother; and they fell down and worshipped him; and opening their treasures they offered unto him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. 12 And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.

13 Now when they were departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I tell thee: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him. 14 And he arose and took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt; 15 and was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt did I call my son.

16 Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the Wise-men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the male children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the borders thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had exactly learned of the Wise-men. 17 Then was fulfilled that which was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet, saying,

18 A voice was heard in Ramah,

Weeping and great mourning,

Rachel weeping for her children;

And she would not be comforted, because they are not.

19 But when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeareth in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, saying, 20 Arise and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they are dead that sought the young child’s life. 21 And he arose and took the young child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel. 22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judæa in the room of his father Herod, he was afraid to go thither; and being warned of God in a dream, he withdrew into the parts of Galilee, 23 and came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth; that it might be fulfilled which was spoken through the prophets, that he should be called a Nazarene.

Isus în Betleemul din Iudeea, în zilele împăratului Irod, iată că au venit niște magi din Răsărit*Gen. 10:30;25:6.1 Împ. 4:30. la Ierusalim 2 și au întrebat: „Unde*Luca 2:11. este Împăratul de curând născut al iudeilor? Fiindcă I-am văzut steaua*Num. 24:17.Is. 60:3. în Răsărit și am venit să ne închinăm Lui." 3 Când a auzit împăratul Irod acest lucru, s-a tulburat mult și tot Ierusalimul s-a tulburat împreună cu el. 4 A adunat pe toți preoții*2 Cron. 36:14. cei mai de seamă și pe*2 Cron. 34:13. cărturarii norodului și a căutat să afle*Mal. 2:7. de la ei unde trebuia să Se nască Hristosul. 5 „În Betleemul din Iudeea", i-au răspuns ei, „căci iată ce a fost scris prin prorocul: 6 ‘Și tu, Betleeme*Mica 5:2.Ioan 7:42., țara lui Iuda, nu ești nicidecum cea mai neînsemnată dintre căpeteniile lui Iuda; căci din tine va ieși o Căpetenie, care va fi Păstorul*Apoc. 2:27. poporului Meu Israel.’" 7 Atunci, Irod a chemat în ascuns pe magi și a aflat întocmai de la ei vremea în care se arătase steaua. 8 Apoi i-a trimis la Betleem și le-a zis: „Duceți-vă de cercetați cu de-amănuntul despre Prunc și, când Îl veți găsi, dați-mi și mie de știre, ca să vin și eu să mă închin Lui." 9 După ce au ascultat pe împăratul, magii au plecat. Și iată că steaua pe care o văzuseră în Răsărit mergea înaintea lor, până ce a venit și s-a oprit deasupra locului unde era Pruncul. 10 Când au văzut ei steaua, n-au mai putut de bucurie. 11 Au intrat în casă, au văzut Pruncul cu Maria, mama Lui, s-au aruncat cu fața la pământ și I s-au închinat; apoi și-au deschis vistieriile și I-au adus*Ps. 72:10.Is. 60:6. daruri: aur, tămâie și smirnă. 12 În urmă, au fost înștiințați de Dumnezeu în vis*Cap. 1:20. să nu mai dea pe la Irod și s-au întors în țara lor pe un alt drum.

13 După ce au plecat magii, un înger al Domnului se arată în vis lui Iosif și-i zice: „Scoală-te, ia Pruncul și pe mama Lui, fugi în Egipt și rămâi acolo până îți voi spune eu, căci Irod are să caute Pruncul ca să-L omoare." 14 Iosif s-a sculat, a luat Pruncul și pe mama lui, noaptea, și a plecat în Egipt. 15 Acolo a rămas până la moartea lui Irod, ca să se împlinească ce fusese vestit de Domnul prin prorocul care zice: „Am chemat pe Fiul Meu din*Osea 11:1. Egipt." 16 Atunci, Irod, când a văzut că fusese înșelat de magi, s-a mâniat foarte tare și a trimis să omoare pe toți pruncii de parte bărbătească, de la doi ani în jos, care erau în Betleem și în toate împrejurimile lui, potrivit cu vremea pe care o aflase întocmai de la magi.

17 Atunci s-a împlinit ce fusese vestit prin prorocul Ieremia*Ier. 31:15., care zice:

18 „Un țipăt s-a auzit în Rama,

plângere și bocet mult:

Rahela își jelea copiii

și nu voia să fie mângâiată, pentru că nu mai erau."

19 După ce a murit Irod, un înger al Domnului se arată în vis lui Iosif, în Egipt, 20 și-i zice: „Scoală-te, ia Pruncul și pe mama Lui și du-te în țara lui Israel, căci au murit cei ce căutau să ia viața Pruncului." 21 Iosif s-a sculat, a luat Pruncul și pe mama Lui și a venit în țara lui Israel. 22 Dar, când a auzit că în Iudeea împărățește Arhelau, în locul tatălui său Irod, s-a temut să se ducă acolo; și, fiind înștiințat de Dumnezeu în vis, a plecat în părțile*Cap. 3:13.Luca 2:39. Galileii. 23 A venit acolo și a locuit într-o cetate numită*Ioan 1:45. Nazaret, ca să se împlinească ce fusese vestit*Jud. 13:5.1 Sam. 1:11. prin proroci: că El va fi chemat Nazarinean.
