1 And in those days cometh John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judæa, saying, 2 Repent ye; for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. 3 For this is he that was spoken of through Isaiah the prophet, saying,

The voice of one crying in the wilderness,

Make ye ready the way of the Lord,

Make his paths straight.

4 Now John himself had his raiment of camel’s hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his food was locusts and wild honey. 5 Then went out unto him Jerusalem, and all Judæa, and all the region round about the Jordan; 6 and they were baptized of him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. 7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said unto them, Ye offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 8 Bring forth therefore fruit worthy of repentance: 9 and think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham. 10 And even now the axe lieth at the root of the trees: every tree therefore that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. 11 I indeed baptize you in water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you in the Holy Spirit and in fire: 12 whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing-floor; and he will gather his wheat into the garner, but the chaff he will burn up with unquenchable fire.

13 Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to the Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. 14 But John would have hindered him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? 15 But Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffereth him. 16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway from the water: and lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming upon him; 17 and lo, a voice out of the heavens, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

1 În vremea aceea a venit Ioan*Marcu 1:4,15.Luca 3:2,3.Ioan 1:28. Botezătorul și propovăduia în*Ios. 14:10. pustia Iudeii. 2 El zicea: „Pocăiți-vă, căci Împărăția cerurilor*Dan. 2:44. Cap. 4:17;10:7. este aproape."

3 Ioan acesta este acela care fusese vestit prin prorocul Isaia, când zice:

„Iată glasul*Is. 40:3.Marcu 1:3.Luca 3:4.Ioan 1:23. celui ce strigă în pustie:

‘Pregătiți*Luca 1:76. calea Domnului,

neteziți-I cărările.’"

4 Ioan*Marcu 1:6. purta*2 Împ. 1:8.Zah. 13:4. o haină de păr de cămilă și la mijloc era încins cu un brâu de curea. El se hrănea cu lăcuste*Lev. 11:22. și miere sălbatică*1 Sam. 14:25,26.. 5 Locuitorii*Marcu 1:5.Luca 3:7. din Ierusalim, din toată Iudeea și din toate împrejurimile Iordanului au început să iasă la el; 6 și, mărturisindu-și păcatele, erau botezați*Fapte 19:4,18. de el în râul Iordan. 7 Dar când a văzut pe mulți din farisei și din saduchei că vin să primească botezul lui, le-a zis: „Pui de năpârci*Cap. 12:34;23:33.Luca 3:7-9., cine v-a învățat să fugiți de mânia*Rom. 5:9.1 Tes. 1:10. viitoare? 8 Faceți dar roade vrednice de pocăința voastră. 9 Și să nu credeți că puteți zice în voi înșivă: ‘Avem ca tată*Ioan 8:33,39.Fapte 13:26.Rom. 4:1,11,16. pe Avraam!’ Căci vă spun că Dumnezeu din pietrele acestea poate să ridice fii lui Avraam. 10 Iată că securea a și fost înfiptă la rădăcina pomilor: deci orice pom*Cap. 7:19.Luca 13:7,9.Ioan 15:6. care nu face rod bun va fi tăiat și aruncat în foc. 11 Cât despre mine, eu vă*Marcu 1:8.Luca 3:16.Ioan 1:15,26,33.Fapte 1:5;11:16;19:4. botez cu apă, spre pocăință; dar Cel ce vine după mine este mai puternic decât mine, și eu nu sunt vrednic să-I duc încălțămintea. El*Is. 4:4;44:3.Mal. 3:2.Fapte 2:3,4.1 Cor. 12:13. vă va boteza cu Duhul Sfânt și cu foc. 12 Acela*Mal. 3:3. Își are lopata în mână, Își va curăți cu desăvârșire aria și Își va strânge grâul în grânar, dar pleava o va arde*Mal. 4:1. Cap. 13:30. într-un foc care nu se stinge."

13 Atunci*Marcu 1:9.Luca 3:21. a venit Isus din Galileea*Cap. 2:22. la Iordan, la Ioan, ca să fie botezat de el. 14 Dar Ioan căuta să-l oprească. „Eu", zicea el, „am trebuință să fiu botezat de Tine, și Tu vii la mine?" 15 Drept răspuns, Isus i-a zis: „Lasă-Mă acum, căci așa se cade să împlinim tot ce trebuie împlinit." Atunci, Ioan L-a lăsat. 16 De îndată ce a fost botezat*Marcu 1:10., Isus a ieșit din apă. Și, în clipa aceea, cerurile s-au deschis și a văzut pe Duhul*Is. 11:2;42:1.Luca 3:22.Ioan 1:32,33. lui Dumnezeu coborându-Se în chip de porumbel și venind peste El. 17 Și din ceruri*Ioan 12:28. s-a auzit un glas, care zicea: „Acesta*Ps. 2:7.Is. 42:1. Cap. 12:18;17:5.Marcu 1:11.Luca 9:35.Efes. 1:6.Col. 1:13.2 Pet. 1:17. este Fiul Meu preaiubit, în care Îmi găsesc plăcerea."
