1 Be not thou envious against evil men;

Neither desire to be with them:

2 For their heart studieth oppression,

And their lips talk of mischief.

3 Through wisdom is a house builded;

And by understanding it is established;

4 And by knowledge are the chambers filled

With all precious and pleasant riches.

5 A wise man is strong;

Yea, a man of knowledge increaseth might.

6 For by wise guidance thou shalt make thy war;

And in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.

7 Wisdom is too high for a fool:

He openeth not his mouth in the gate.

8 He that deviseth to do evil,

Men shall call him a mischief-maker.

9 The thought of foolishness is sin;

And the scoffer is an abomination to men.

10 If thou faint in the day of adversity,

Thy strength is small.

11 Deliver them that are carried away unto death,

And those that are ready to be slain see that thou hold back.

12 If thou sayest, Behold, we knew not this;

Doth not he that weigheth the hearts consider it?

And he that keepeth thy soul, doth not he know it?

And shall not he render to every man according to his work?

13 My son, eat thou honey, for it is good;

And the droppings of the honeycomb, which are sweet to thy taste:

14 So shalt thou know wisdom to be unto thy soul;

If thou hast found it, then shall there be a reward,

And thy hope shall not be cut off.

15 Lay not wait, O wicked man, against the habitation of the righteous;

Destroy not his resting-place:

16 For a righteous man falleth seven times, and riseth up again;

But the wicked are overthrown by calamity.

17 Rejoice not when thine enemy falleth,

And let not thy heart be glad when he is overthrown;

18 Lest Jehovah see it, and it displease him,

And he turn away his wrath from him.

19 Fret not thyself because of evil-doers;

Neither be thou envious at the wicked:

20 For there shall be no reward to the evil man;

The lamp of the wicked shall be put out.

21 My son, fear thou Jehovah and the king;

And company not with them that are given to change:

22 For their calamity shall rise suddenly;

And the destruction from them both, who knoweth it?

23 These also are sayings of the wise.

To have respect of persons in judgment is not good.

24 He that saith unto the wicked, Thou art righteous,

Peoples shall curse him, nations shall abhor him;

25 But to them that rebuke him shall be delight,

And a good blessing shall come upon them.

26 He kisseth the lips

Who giveth a right answer.

27 Prepare thy work without,

And make it ready for thee in the field;

And afterwards build thy house.

28 Be not a witness against thy neighbor without cause;

And deceive not with thy lips.

29 Say not, I will do so to him as he hath done to me;

I will render to the man according to his work.

30 I went by the field of the sluggard,

And by the vineyard of the man void of understanding;

31 And, lo, it was all grown over with thorns,

The face thereof was covered with nettles,

And the stone wall thereof was broken down.

32 Then I beheld, and considered well;

I saw, and received instruction:

33 Yet a little sleep, a little slumber,

A little folding of the hands to sleep;

34 So shall thy poverty come as a robber,

And thy want as an armed man.

3 Prin înțelepciune se înalță o casă

și prin pricepere se întărește;

4 prin știință se umplu cămările ei

de toate bunătățile de preț și plăcute.

5 Un om*Cap. 21:22.Ecl. 9:16. înțelept este plin de putere

și cel priceput își oțelește vlaga.

6 Căci*Cap. 11:14;15:22;20:18.Luca 14:31. prin măsuri chibzuite câștigi bătălia,

și prin marele număr al sfetnicilor ai biruința.

7 Înțelepciunea este prea*Ps. 10:5. Cap. 14:6. înaltă pentru cel nebun:

el nu va deschide gura la judecată.

8 Cine se*Rom. 1:30. gândește să facă rău

se cheamă un om plin de răutate.

9 Gândul celui nebun nu este decât păcat

și batjocoritorul este o scârbă pentru oameni.

10 Dacă slăbești în ziua necazului,

mică îți este puterea.

11 Izbăvește*Ps. 82:4.Is. 58:6,7.1 Ioan 3:16. pe cei târâți la moarte

și scapă pe cei ce sunt aproape să fie înjunghiați.

12 Dacă zici: „Ah! n-am știut…",

crezi că nu vede Cel ce*Cap. 21:2. cântărește inimile

și Cel ce veghează asupra sufletului tău?

Și nu va răsplăti El fiecăruia după*Iov 34:11.Ps. 62:12.Ier. 32:19.Rom. 2:6.Apoc. 2:23;22:12. faptele lui?

13 Fiule, mănâncă*Cânt. 5:1. miere, căci este bună,

și fagurele de miere este dulce pentru cerul gurii tale!

14 Tot*Ps. 119:10;119:103. așa și înțelepciunea este bună pentru sufletul tău:

dacă o vei găsi, ai un viitor*Cap. 23:18.

și nu ți se va tăia nădejdea.

15 Nu*Ps. 10:9,10. întinde curse, nelegiuitule, la locuința celui neprihănit

și nu-i tulbura odihna!

16 Căci*Iov 5:19.Ps. 34:19;37:24.Mica 7:8. cel neprihănit de șapte ori cade și se ridică,

dar*Est. 7:10.Amos 5:2;8:14.Apoc. 18:21. cei răi se prăbușesc în nenorocire.

17 Nu*Iov 31:29.Ps. 35:15,19. Cap. 17:5.Obad. 12. te bucura de căderea vrăjmașului tău

și să nu ți se veselească inima când se poticnește el,

18 ca nu cumva Domnul să vadă, să nu-I placă

și să-Și întoarcă mânia de la el!

19 Nu*Ps. 37:1;73:3. Cap. 23:17. Vers. 1. te mânia din pricina celor ce fac rău

și nu pizmui pe cei răi!

20 Căci*Ps. 11:6. cel ce face răul n-are niciun viitor

și lumina*Iov 18:5,6;21:17. Cap. 13:9;20:20. celor răi se stinge.

21 Fiule, teme-te*Rom. 13:7.1 Pet. 2:17. de Domnul și de împăratul

și să nu te amesteci cu cei neastâmpărați!

22 Căci deodată le va veni pieirea.

Și cine poate ști sfârșitul amândurora?

23 Iată ce mai spun înțelepții:

„Nu*Lev. 19:15.Deut. 1:17;16:19. Cap. 18:5;28:21.Ioan 7:24. este bine să ai în vedere fața oamenilor în judecăți."

24 Pe cine*Cap. 17:15.Is. 5:23. zice celui rău: „Tu ești bun!"

îl blestemă popoarele și-l urăsc neamurile.

25 Dar celor ce judecă drept le merge bine

și o mare binecuvântare vine peste ei.

26 Un răspuns bun este

ca un sărut pe buze.

27 Vezi-ți*1 Împ. 5:17,18.Luca 14:28. întâi de treburi afară,

îngrijește de lucrul câmpului,

și apoi apucă-te să-ți zidești casa!

28 Nu*Efes. 4:25. vorbi în chip ușuratic împotriva aproapelui tău;

ori ai vrea să înșeli cu buzele tale?

29 Nu*Cap. 20:22.Mat. 5:39,44.Rom. 12:17,19. zice: „Cum mi-a făcut el, așa am să-i fac și eu,

îi voi răsplăti după faptele lui!"

30 Am trecut pe lângă ogorul unui leneș

și pe lângă via unui om fără minte.

31 Și era*Gen. 3:18. numai spini, acoperit de mărăcini,

și zidul de piatră era prăbușit.

32 M-am uitat bine și cu luare aminte

și am tras învățătură din ce am văzut.

33 „Să mai dorm puțin*Cap. 6:9., să mai ațipesc puțin,

să mai încrucișez mâinile puțin, ca să mă odihnesc…"

34 Și sărăcia vine peste tine pe neașteptate,

ca un hoț, și lipsa, ca un om înarmat.
