1 These also are proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied out.

2 It is the glory of God to conceal a thing;

But the glory of kings is to search out a matter.

3 As the heavens for height, and the earth for depth,

So the heart of kings is unsearchable.

4 Take away the dross from the silver,

And there cometh forth a vessel for the refiner:

5 Take away the wicked from before the king,

And his throne shall be established in righteousness.

6 Put not thyself forward in the presence of the king,

And stand not in the place of great men:

7 For better is it that it be said unto thee, Come up hither,

Than that thou shouldest be put lower in the presence of the prince,

Whom thine eyes have seen.

8 Go not forth hastily to strive,

Lest thou know not what to do in the end thereof,

When thy neighbor hath put thee to shame.

9 Debate thy cause with thy neighbor himself,

And disclose not the secret of another;

10 Lest he that heareth it revile thee,

And thine infamy turn not away.

11 A word fitly spoken

Is like apples of gold in network of silver.

12 As an ear-ring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold,

So is a wise reprover upon an obedient ear.

13 As the cold of snow in the time of harvest,

So is a faithful messenger to them that send him;

For he refresheth the soul of his masters.

14 As clouds and wind without rain,

So is he that boasteth himself of his gifts falsely.

15 By long forbearing is a ruler persuaded,

And a soft tongue breaketh the bone.

16 Hast thou found honey? eat so much as is sufficient for thee,

Lest thou be filled therewith, and vomit it.

17 Let thy foot be seldom in thy neighbor’s house,

Lest he be weary of thee, and hate thee.

18 A man that beareth false witness against his neighbor

Is a maul, and a sword, and a sharp arrow.

19 Confidence in an unfaithful man in time of trouble

Is like a broken tooth, and a foot out of joint.

20 As one that taketh off a garment in cold weather, and as vinegar upon soda,

So is he that singeth songs to a heavy heart.

21 If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat;

And if he be thirsty, give him water to drink:

22 For thou wilt heap coals of fire upon his head,

And Jehovah will reward thee.

23 The north wind bringeth forth rain;

So doth a backbiting tongue an angry countenance.

24 It is better to dwell in the corner of the housetop,

Than with a contentious woman in a wide house.

25 As cold waters to a thirsty soul,

So is good news from a far country.

26 As a troubled fountain, and a corrupted spring,

So is a righteous man that giveth way before the wicked.

27 It is not good to eat much honey;

So for men to search out their own glory is grievous.

28 He whose spirit is without restraint

Is like a city that is broken down and without walls.

dar slava împăraților stă în cercetarea*Iov 29:16. lucrurilor.

3 Înălțimea cerurilor, adâncimea pământului

și inima împăraților sunt nepătrunse.

4 Scoate*2 Tim. 2:21. zgura din argint

și argintarul va face din el un vas ales!

5 Scoate*Cap. 20:8. și pe cel rău dinaintea împăratului

și scaunul lui de domnie*Cap. 16:12;29:14. se va întări prin neprihănire.

6 Nu te făli înaintea împăratului

și nu lua locul celor mari;

7 căci*Luca 14:8-10. este mai bine să ți se zică: „Suie-te mai sus!"

decât să fii coborât înaintea voievodului

pe care ți-l văd ochii.

8 Nu*Cap. 17:14.Mat. 5:25. te grăbi să te iei la ceartă,

ca nu cumva, la urmă, să nu știi ce să faci

când te va lua la ocări aproapele tău.

9 Apără-ți*Mat. 5:25;18:15. pricina împotriva aproapelui tău,

dar nu da pe față taina altuia,

10 ca nu cumva, aflând-o cineva, să te umple de rușine

și să-ți iasă nume rău, care să nu se mai șteargă!

11 Un cuvânt spus la vremea potrivită

este ca niște mere*Cap. 15:23.Is. 50:4. de aur într-un coșuleț de argint.

12 Ca o verigă de aur și o podoabă de aur curat,

așa este înțeleptul care mustră pentru o ureche ascultătoare.

13 Ca*Cap. 13:17. răcoreala zăpezii pe vremea secerișului,

așa este un sol credincios pentru cel ce-l trimite:

el înviorează sufletul stăpânului său.

14 Ca norii*Iuda 12. și vântul fără ploaie,

așa este un om care*Cap. 20:6. se laudă pe nedrept cu dărniciile lui.

15 Prin*Gen. 32:4.1 Sam. 25:24. Cap. 15:1;16:14. răbdare se înduplecă un voievod

și o limbă dulce poate zdrobi oase.

16 Dacă*Vers. 27. dai peste miere, nu mânca decât atât cât îți ajunge,

ca să nu ți se scârbească și s-o verși din gură.

17 Calcă rar în casa aproapelui tău,

ca să nu se sature de tine și să te urască.

18 Ca un buzdugan, ca o sabie și ca o săgeată ascuțită,

așa este un om care*Ps. 57:4;120:3,4. Cap. 12:18. face o mărturisire mincinoasă împotriva aproapelui său.

19 Ca un dinte stricat și ca un picior care șchioapătă,

așa este încrederea într-un stricat la ziua necazului.

20 Ca unul care își scoate haina pe o zi rece sau varsă oțet pe silitră,

așa este cine cântă cântece unei inimi în nenorocire.

21 Dacă*Dan. 6:18.Rom. 12:15. este flămând vrăjmașul tău, dă-i pâine să mănânce,

dacă-i este sete, dă-i apă să bea!

22 Căci*Exod 23:4,5.Mat. 5:44.Rom. 12:20., făcând așa, aduni cărbuni aprinși pe capul lui,

și*2 Sam. 16:12. Domnul îți va răsplăti.

23 Vântul*Iov 37:22. de miazănoapte aduce ploaia

și limba*Ps. 101:5. clevetitoare aduce o față mâhnită.

24 Mai*Cap. 19:13;21:9,19. bine să locuiești într-un colț pe acoperiș

decât să locuiești într-o casă mare cu o nevastă gâlcevitoare.

25 Ca apa proaspătă pentru un om obosit,

așa este o veste bună venită dintr-o țară depărtată.

26 Ca o fântână tulbure și ca un izvor stricat,

așa este cel neprihănit care se clatină înaintea celui rău.

27 Nu*Vers. 16. este bine să mănânci multă miere:

tot așa, nu este o cinste să*Cap. 27:2. alergi după slava ta însuți.

28 Omul care*Cap. 16:32. nu este stăpân pe sine

este ca o cetate surpată și fără ziduri.
