1 As snow in summer, and as rain in harvest,

So honor is not seemly for a fool.

2 As the sparrow in her wandering, as the swallow in her flying,

So the curse that is causeless alighteth not.

3 A whip for the horse, a bridle for the ass,

And a rod for the back of fools.

4 Answer not a fool according to his folly,

Lest thou also be like unto him.

5 Answer a fool according to his folly,

Lest he be wise in his own conceit.

6 He that sendeth a message by the hand of a fool

Cutteth off his own feet, and drinketh in damage.

7 The legs of the lame hang loose;

So is a parable in the mouth of fools.

8 As one that bindeth a stone in a sling,

So is he that giveth honor to a fool.

9 As a thorn that goeth up into the hand of a drunkard,

So is a parable in the mouth of fools.

10 As an archer that woundeth all,

So is he that hireth a fool and he that hireth them that pass by.

11 As a dog that returneth to his vomit,

So is a fool that repeateth his folly.

12 Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit?

There is more hope of a fool than of him.

13 The sluggard saith, There is a lion in the way;

A lion is in the streets.

14 As the door turneth upon its hinges,

So doth the sluggard upon his bed.

15 The sluggard burieth his hand in the dish;

It wearieth him to bring it again to his mouth.

16 The sluggard is wiser in his own conceit

Than seven men that can render a reason.

17 He that passeth by, and vexeth himself with strife belonging not to him,

Is like one that taketh a dog by the ears.

18 As a madman who casteth firebrands,

Arrows, and death,

19 So is the man that deceiveth his neighbor,

And saith, Am not I in sport?

20 For lack of wood the fire goeth out;

And where there is no whisperer, contention ceaseth.

21 As coals are to hot embers, and wood to fire,

So is a contentious man to inflame strife.

22 The words of a whisperer are as dainty morsels,

And they go down into the innermost parts.

23 Fervent lips and a wicked heart

Are like an earthen vessel overlaid with silver dross.

24 He that hateth dissembleth with his lips;

But he layeth up deceit within him:

25 When he speaketh fair, believe him not;

For there are seven abominations in his heart:

26 Though his hatred cover itself with guile,

His wickedness shall be openly showed before the assembly.

27 Whoso diggeth a pit shall fall therein;

And he that rolleth a stone, it shall return upon him.

28 A lying tongue hateth those whom it hath wounded;

And a flattering mouth worketh ruin.

2 Cum sare vrabia încoace și încolo și cum zboară rândunica,

așa nu nimerește blestemul*Num. 23:8.Deut. 23:5. neîntemeiat.

3 Biciul*Ps. 32:9. Cap. 10:13. este pentru cal, frâul, pentru măgar

și nuiaua, pentru spinarea nebunilor.

4 Nu răspunde nebunului după nebunia lui,

ca să nu semeni și tu cu el.

5 Răspunde*Mat. 16:1-4;21:24-27. însă nebunului după nebunia lui,

ca să nu se creadă înțelept.

6 Cel ce trimite o solie printr-un nebun

își taie singur picioarele și bea nedreptatea.

7 Cum sunt picioarele ologului,

așa este și o vorbă înțeleaptă în gura unor nebuni.

8 Cum ai pune o piatră în praștie,

așa este când dai mărire unui nebun.

9 Ca un spin care vine în mâna unui om beat,

așa este o vorbă înțeleaptă în gura nebunilor.

10 Ca un arcaș care rănește pe toată lumea,

așa este cel ce tocmește pe nebuni și pe întâii veniți.

11 Cum*2 Pet. 2:22. se întoarce câinele la ce a vărsat,

așa se întoarce nebunul*Exod 8:15. la nebunia lui.

12 Dacă vezi*Cap. 29:20.Luca 18:11.Rom. 12:16.Apoc. 3:17. un om care se crede înțelept,

poți să ai mai multă nădejde pentru un nebun decât pentru el.

13 Leneșul*Cap. 22:13. zice: „Afară este un leu,

pe ulițe este un leu!"

14 Cum se învârtește ușa pe țâțânile ei,

așa se învârtește leneșul*Cap. 19:24. în patul lui.

15 Leneșul își vâră mâna în blid

și-i vine greu s-o ducă iarăși la gură.

16 Leneșul se crede mai înțelept

decât șapte oameni care răspund cu judecată.

17 Un trecător care se amestecă într-o ceartă care nu-l privește

este ca unul care apucă un câine de urechi.

18 Ca nebunul care aruncă

săgeți aprinse și ucigătoare,

19 așa este omul care înșală pe aproapele său

și apoi zice: „Am*Efes. 5:4. vrut doar să glumesc!"

20 Când nu mai sunt lemne, focul se stinge;

și când nu*Cap. 22:10. mai este niciun clevetitor, cearta se potolește.

21 După cum*Cap. 15:18;29:22. cărbunele face jăratic și lemnul, foc,

tot așa și omul gâlcevitor aprinde cearta.

22 Cuvintele*Cap. 18:8. clevetitorului sunt ca niște prăjituri,

alunecă până în fundul măruntaielor.

23 Ca zgura de argint pusă pe un ciob de pământ,

așa sunt buzele aprinse și o inimă rea.

24 Cel ce urăște se preface cu buzele lui

și înăuntrul lui pregătește înșelăciunea.

25 Când*Ps. 28:3.Ier. 9:8. îți vorbește cu glas dulce, nu-l crede,

căci șapte urâciuni sunt în inima lui.

26 Chiar dacă-și ascunde ura în prefăcătorie,

totuși răutatea lui se va descoperi în adunare.

27 Cine*Ps. 7:15,16;9:15;10:2;57:6. Cap. 28:10.Ecl. 10:8. sapă groapa altuia cade el în ea

și piatra se întoarce peste cel ce o prăvălește.

28 Limba mincinoasă urăște pe cei pe care-i doboară ea

și gura lingușitoare pregătește pieirea.
