1 I say then, Did God cast off his people? God forbid. For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin. 2 God did not cast off his people which he foreknew. Or know ye not what the scripture saith of Elijah? how he pleadeth with God against Israel: 3 Lord, they have killed thy prophets, they have digged down thine altars; and I am left alone, and they seek my life. 4 But what saith the answer of God unto him? I have left for myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to Baal. 5 Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace. 6 But if it is by grace, it is no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. 7 What then? That which Israel seeketh for, that he obtained not; but the election obtained it, and the rest were hardened: 8 according as it is written, God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear, unto this very day. 9 And David saith,

Let their table be made a snare, and a trap,

And a stumblingblock, and a recompense unto them:

10 Let their eyes be darkened, that they may not see,

And bow thou down their back always.

11 I say then, Did they stumble that they might fall? God forbid: but by their fall salvation is come unto the Gentiles, to provoke them to jealousy. 12 Now if their fall is the riches of the world, and their loss the riches of the Gentiles; how much more their fulness? 13 But I speak to you that are Gentiles. Inasmuch then as I am an apostle of Gentiles, I glorify my ministry; 14 if by any means I may provoke to jealousy them that are my flesh, and may save some of them. 15 For if the casting away of them is the reconciling of the world, what shall the receiving of them be, but life from the dead? 16 And if the firstfruit is holy, so is the lump: and if the root is holy, so are the branches. 17 But if some of the branches were broken off, and thou, being a wild olive, wast grafted in among them, and didst become partaker with them of the root of the fatness of the olive tree; 18 glory not over the branches: but if thou gloriest, it is not thou that bearest the root, but the root thee. 19 Thou wilt say then, Branches were broken off, that I might be grafted in. 20 Well; by their unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by thy faith. Be not highminded, but fear: 21 for if God spared not the natural branches, neither will he spare thee. 22 Behold then the goodness and severity of God: toward them that fell, severity; but toward thee, God’s goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off. 23 And they also, if they continue not in their unbelief, shall be grafted in: for God is able to graft them in again. 24 For if thou wast cut out of that which is by nature a wild olive tree, and wast grafted contrary to nature into a good olive tree; how much more shall these, which are the natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree?

25 For I would not, brethren, have you ignorant of this mystery, lest ye be wise in your own conceits, that a hardening in part hath befallen Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in; 26 and so all Israel shall be saved: even as it is written,

There shall come out of Zion the Deliverer;

He shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob:

27 And this is my covenant unto them,

When I shall take away their sins.

28 As touching the gospel, they are enemies for your sake: but as touching the election, they are beloved for the fathers’ sake. 29 For the gifts and the calling of God are not repented of. 30 For as ye in time past were disobedient to God, but now have obtained mercy by their disobedience, 31 even so have these also now been disobedient, that by the mercy shown to you they also may now obtain mercy. 32 For God hath shut up all unto disobedience, that he might have mercy upon all.

33 O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and the knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past tracing out! 34 For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor? 35 or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again? 36 For of him, and through him, and unto him, are all things. To him be the glory for ever. Amen.

Cum se plânge el lui Dumnezeu împotriva lui Israel, când zice: 3 „Doamne*1 Împ. 19:10,14., pe prorocii Tăi i-au omorât, altarele Tale le-au surpat; am rămas eu singur și caută să-mi ia viața?" 4 Dar ce-i răspunde Dumnezeu? „Mi-am*1 Împ. 19:18. păstrat șapte mii de bărbați, care nu și-au plecat genunchiul înaintea lui Baal." 5 Tot așa*Cap. 9:27., și în vremea de față, este o rămășiță datorită unei alegeri prin har. 6 Și dacă*Cap. 4:4,5.Gal. 5:4.Deut. 9:4,5. este prin har, atunci nu mai este prin fapte; altminteri, harul n-ar mai fi har. Și dacă este prin fapte, nu mai este prin har; altminteri, fapta n-ar mai fi faptă. 7 Deci, ce urmează? Că Israel*Cap. 9:31;10:9. n-a căpătat ce căuta, iar rămășița aleasă a căpătat, pe când ceilalți au fost împietriți, 8 după cum este scris: „Dumnezeu*Is. 29:10. le-a dat un duh de adormire, ochi*Deut. 29:4.Is. 6:9.Ier. 5:21.Ezec. 12:2.Mat. 13:14.Ioan 12:40.Fapte 28:26,27. ca să nu vadă și urechi ca să n-audă, până în ziua de astăzi." 9 Și David zice: „Masa lor să*Ps. 69:22. li se prefacă într-o cursă, într-un laț, într-un prilej de cădere și într-o dreaptă răsplătire. 10 Să*Ps. 69:23. li se întunece ochii ca să nu vadă și spinarea să le-o ții mereu gârbovită."

11 Întreb dar: „S-au poticnit ei ca să cadă?" Nicidecum! Ci, prin*Fapte 13:46;18:6;22:18,21;28:24,28. Cap. 10:19. alunecarea lor, s-a făcut cu putință mântuirea neamurilor, ca să facă pe Israel gelos; 12 dacă, deci, alunecarea lor a fost o bogăție pentru lume și paguba lor a fost o bogăție pentru neamuri, ce va fi plinătatea întoarcerii lor? 13 V-o spun vouă, neamurilor: Întrucât sunt*Fapte 9:15;13:2;22:21. Cap. 15:16.Gal. 1:16;2:2,7-9.Efes. 3:8.1 Tim. 2:7.2 Tim. 1:11. apostol al neamurilor, îmi slăvesc slujba mea 14 și caut ca, dacă este cu putință, să stârnesc gelozia celor din neamul meu și să*1 Cor. 7:16;9:22.1 Tim. 4:16.Iac. 5:20. mântuiesc pe unii din ei. 15 Căci, dacă lepădarea lor a adus împăcarea lumii, ce va fi primirea lor din nou, decât viață din morți? 16 Iar dacă cele dintâi roade*Lev. 23:10.Num. 15:18-21. sunt sfinte, și plămădeala este sfântă; și dacă rădăcina este sfântă, și ramurile sunt sfinte. 17 Iar dacă unele*Ier. 11:16. din ramuri au fost tăiate și dacă tu*Fapte 2:39.Efes. 2:12,13., care erai dintr-un măslin sălbatic, ai fost altoit în locul lor și ai fost făcut părtaș rădăcinii și grăsimii măslinului, 18 nu*1 Cor. 10:12. te făli față de ramuri. Dacă te fălești, să știi că nu tu ții rădăcina, ci rădăcina te ține pe tine. 19 Dar vei zice: „Ramurile au fost tăiate, ca să fiu altoit eu." 20 Adevărat: au fost tăiate din pricina necredinței lor, și tu stai în picioare prin credință: Nu*Cap. 12:16. te îngâmfa dar, ci teme-te*Prov. 28:14.Is. 66:2.Filip. 2:12.! 21 Căci dacă n-a cruțat Dumnezeu ramurile firești, nu te va cruța nici pe tine. 22 Uită-te dar la bunătatea și asprimea lui Dumnezeu: asprime față de cei ce au căzut și bunătate față de tine, dacă*1 Cor. 15:2.Evr. 3:6,14. nu încetezi să rămâi în bunătatea aceasta; altminteri, vei fi tăiat și*Ioan 15:2. tu. 23 Și chiar ei, dacă*2 Cor. 3:16. nu stăruiesc în necredință, vor fi altoiți, căci Dumnezeu poate să-i altoiască iarăși. 24 Fiindcă, dacă tu, care ai fost tăiat dintr-un măslin care din fire era sălbatic, ai fost altoit, împotriva firii tale, într-un măslin bun, cu cât mai mult vor fi altoiți ei, care sunt ramuri firești în măslinul lor?

25 Fraților, pentru ca să nu vă socotiți singuri înțelepți*Cap. 12:16., nu vreau să nu știți taina aceasta: o parte din Israel a căzut într-o împietrire*Vers. 7.2 Cor. 3:14. care va ține până*Luca 21:24.Apoc. 7:9. va intra numărul deplin al neamurilor. 26 Și atunci tot Israelul va fi mântuit, după cum este scris: „Izbăvitorul va veni*Is. 59:20.Ps. 14:7. din Sion și va îndepărta toate nelegiuirile de la Iacov. 27 Acesta*Is. 27:9.Ier. 31:31.Evr. 8:8;10:16. va fi legământul pe care-l voi face cu ei, când le voi șterge păcatele." 28 În ce privește Evanghelia, ei sunt vrăjmași, și aceasta spre binele vostru, dar în ce privește alegerea, sunt iubiți*Deut. 7:8;9:5;10:15. din pricina părinților lor. 29 Căci lui Dumnezeu nu-I pare rău de darurile și de chemarea făcută*Num. 23:19.. 30 După cum voi odinioară*Efes. 2:2.Col. 3:7. n-ați ascultat de Dumnezeu și după cum prin neascultarea lor ați căpătat îndurare acum, 31 tot așa, ei, acum, n-au ascultat, pentru ca, prin îndurarea arătată vouă, să capete și ei îndurare. 32 Fiindcă Dumnezeu*Cap. 3:9.Gal. 3:22. a închis pe toți oamenii în neascultare, ca să aibă îndurare de toți. 33 O, adâncul bogăției, înțelepciunii și științei lui Dumnezeu! Cât*Ps. 36:6. de nepătrunse sunt judecățile Lui și cât de neînțelese*Iov 11:7.Ps. 92:5. sunt căile Lui! 34 Și în adevăr*Iov 15:8.Is. 40:13.Ier. 23:18.1 Cor. 2:16., „cine a cunoscut gândul Domnului? Sau cine*Iov 36:22. a fost sfetnicul Lui? 35 Cine*Iov 35:7;41:11. I-a dat ceva întâi, ca să aibă de primit înapoi?" 36 Din El*1 Cor. 8:6.Col. 1:16., prin El și pentru El sunt toate lucrurile.
