1 My son, if thou art become surety for thy neighbor,

If thou hast stricken thy hands for a stranger;

2 Thou art snared with the words of thy mouth,

Thou art taken with the words of thy mouth.

3 Do this now, my son, and deliver thyself,

Seeing thou art come into the hand of thy neighbor:

Go, humble thyself, and importune thy neighbor;

4 Give not sleep to thine eyes,

Nor slumber to thine eyelids;

5 Deliver thyself as a roe from the hand of the hunter,

And as a bird from the hand of the fowler.

6 Go to the ant, thou sluggard;

Consider her ways, and be wise:

7 Which having no chief,

Overseer, or ruler,

8 Provideth her bread in the summer,

And gathereth her food in the harvest.

9 How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard?

When wilt thou arise out of thy sleep?

10 Yet a little sleep, a little slumber,

A little folding of the hands to sleep:

11 So shall thy poverty come as a robber,

And thy want as an armed man.

12 A worthless person, a man of iniquity,

Is he that walketh with a perverse mouth;

13 That winketh with his eyes, that speaketh with his feet,

That maketh signs with his fingers;

14 In whose heart is perverseness,

Who deviseth evil continually,

Who soweth discord.

15 Therefore shall his calamity come suddenly;

On a sudden shall he be broken, and that without remedy.

16 There are six things which Jehovah hateth;

Yea, seven which are an abomination unto him:

17 Haughty eyes, a lying tongue,

And hands that shed innocent blood;

18 A heart that deviseth wicked purposes,

Feet that are swift in running to mischief,

19 A false witness that uttereth lies,

And he that soweth discord among brethren.

20 My son, keep the commandment of thy father,

And forsake not the law of thy mother:

21 Bind them continually upon thy heart;

Tie them about thy neck.

22 When thou walkest, it shall lead thee;

When thou sleepest, it shall watch over thee;

And when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee.

23 For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light;

And reproofs of instruction are the way of life:

24 To keep thee from the evil woman,

From the flattery of the foreigner’s tongue.

25 Lust not after her beauty in thy heart;

Neither let her take thee with her eyelids.

26 For on account of a harlot a man is brought to a piece of bread;

And the adulteress hunteth for the precious life.

27 Can a man take fire in his bosom,

And his clothes not be burned?

28 Or can one walk upon hot coals,

And his feet not be scorched?

29 So he that goeth in to his neighbor’s wife;

Whosoever toucheth her shall not be unpunished.

30 Men do not despise a thief, if he steal

To satisfy himself when he is hungry:

31 But if he be found, he shall restore sevenfold;

He shall give all the substance of his house.

32 He that committeth adultery with a woman is void of understanding:

He doeth it who would destroy his own soul.

33 Wounds and dishonor shall he get;

And his reproach shall not be wiped away.

34 For jealousy is the rage of a man;

And he will not spare in the day of vengeance.

35 He will not regard any ransom;

Neither will he rest content, though thou givest many gifts.

dacă te-ai prins pentru altul,

2 dacă ești legat prin făgăduința gurii tale,

dacă ești prins de cuvintele gurii tale,

3 fă totuși lucrul acesta, fiule: dezleagă-te,

căci ai căzut în mâna aproapelui tău!

De aceea du-te, aruncă-te cu fața la pământ și stăruiește de el!

4 Nu da*Ps. 132:4. somn ochilor tăi,

nici ațipire pleoapelor tale!

5 Scapă din mâna lui cum scapă căprioara din mâna vânătorului

și ca pasărea din mâna păsărarului!…

6 Du-te*Iov 12:7. la furnică, leneșule;

uită-te cu băgare de seamă la căile ei și înțelepțește-te!

7 Ea n-are nici căpetenie,

nici priveghetor, nici stăpân,

8 totuși își pregătește hrana vara

și strânge de-ale mâncării în timpul secerișului.

9 Până când*Cap. 24:33,34. vei sta culcat, leneșule?

Când te vei scula din somnul tău?

10 Să mai dormi puțin, să mai ațipești puțin,

să mai încrucișezi puțin mâinile ca să dormi!…

11 Și sărăcia*Cap. 10:4;13:4;20:4. vine peste tine ca un hoț

și lipsa, ca un om înarmat.

12 Omul de nimic, omul nelegiuit,

umblă cu neadevărul în gură,

13 clipește*Iov 15:12.Ps. 35:19. Cap. 10:10. din ochi, dă din picior

și face semne cu degetele.

14 Răutatea este în inima lui, urzește*Mica 2:1. lucruri rele întruna

și stârnește*Vers. 19. certuri.

15 De aceea, nimicirea îi va veni pe neașteptate;

va fi zdrobit*Ier. 19:11. deodată și fără leac*2 Cron. 36:16..

16 Șase lucruri urăște Domnul

și chiar șapte Îi sunt urâte:

17 ochii*Ps. 18:27;101:5. trufași, limba*Ps. 120:2,3. mincinoasă,

mâinile*Is. 1:15. care varsă sânge nevinovat,

18 inima*Gen. 6:5. care urzește planuri nelegiuite,

picioarele*Is. 59:7.Rom. 3:15. care aleargă repede la rău,

19 martorul*Ps. 27:12. Cap. 19:5. mincinos, care spune minciuni,

și cel ce stârnește*Vers. 14. certuri între frați.

20 Fiule*Cap. 1:8.Efes. 6:1., păzește sfaturile tatălui tău

și nu lepăda învățătura mamei tale:

21 leagă-le*Cap. 3:3;7:3. necurmat la inimă,

atârnă-le de gât!

22 Ele te vor însoți*Cap. 3:23,24. în mersul tău,

te vor*Cap. 2:11. păzi în pat

și îți vor vorbi la deșteptare.

23 Căci*Ps. 19:8;119:105. sfatul este o candelă, învățătura este o lumină,

iar îndemnul și mustrarea sunt calea vieții.

24 Ele te vor feri*Cap. 2:16;5:3;7:5. de femeia stricată,

de limba ademenitoare a celei străine.

25 N-o*Mat. 5:28. pofti în inima ta pentru frumusețea ei

și nu te lăsa ademenit de pleoapele ei!

26 Căci pentru*Cap. 29:3. o femeie curvă, omul ajunge de nu mai rămâne decât cu o bucată de pâine,

și*Gen. 39:14. femeia măritată întinde*Ezec. 13:18. o cursă unui suflet scump.

27 Poate cineva să ia foc în sân

fără să i se aprindă hainele?

28 Sau poate merge cineva pe cărbuni aprinși

fără să-i ardă picioarele?

29 Tot așa este și cu cel ce se duce la nevasta aproapelui său:

oricine se atinge de ea nu va rămâne nepedepsit.

30 Hoțul nu este urgisit când fură

ca să-și potolească foamea, căci îi este foame.

31 Și, dacă este prins, trebuie să dea înapoi înșeptit*Exod 22:1,4.,

să dea chiar tot ce are în casă.

32 Dar cel ce preacurvește cu o femeie este*Cap. 7:7. un om fără minte;

singur își pierde viața cine face așa.

33 Nu va avea decât rană și rușine

și ocara nu i se va șterge.

34 Căci gelozia înfurie pe un bărbat,

și n-are milă în ziua răzbunării;

35 nu se uită la niciun preț de răscumpărare

și nu se lasă înduplecat nici chiar de cel mai mare dar.
