1 He that separateth himself seeketh his own desire,

And rageth against all sound wisdom.

2 A fool hath no delight in understanding,

But only that his heart may reveal itself.

3 When the wicked cometh, there cometh also contempt,

And with ignominy cometh reproach.

4 The words of a man’s mouth are as deep waters;

The wellspring of wisdom is as a flowing brook.

5 To respect the person of the wicked is not good,

Nor to turn aside the righteous in judgment.

6 A fool’s lips enter into contention,

And his mouth calleth for stripes.

7 A fool’s mouth is his destruction,

And his lips are the snare of his soul.

8 The words of a whisperer are as dainty morsels,

And they go down into the innermost parts.

9 He also that is slack in his work

Is brother to him that is a destroyer.

10 The name of Jehovah is a strong tower;

The righteous runneth into it, and is safe.

11 The rich man’s wealth is his strong city,

And as a high wall in his own imagination.

12 Before destruction the heart of man is haughty;

And before honor goeth humility.

13 He that giveth answer before he heareth,

It is folly and shame unto him.

14 The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity;

But a broken spirit who can bear?

15 The heart of the prudent getteth knowledge;

And the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge.

16 A man’s gift maketh room for him,

And bringeth him before great men.

17 He that pleadeth his cause first seemeth just;

But his neighbor cometh and searcheth him out.

18 The lot causeth contentions to cease,

And parteth between the mighty.

19 A brother offended is harder to be won than a strong city;

And such contentions are like the bars of a castle.

20 A man’s belly shall be filled with the fruit of his mouth;

With the increase of his lips shall he be satisfied.

21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue;

And they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.

22 Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing,

And obtaineth favor of Jehovah.

23 The poor useth entreaties;

But the rich answereth roughly.

24 He that maketh many friends doeth it to his own destruction;

But there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.

2 Nebunului nu-i este de învățătură,

ci vrea să arate ce știe el.

3 Când vine cel rău, vine și disprețul

și, odată cu rușinea, vine și ocara.

4 Cuvintele gurii unui om sunt ca niște ape*Cap. 10:11;20:5. adânci;

izvorul înțelepciunii este ca un șuvoi*Ps. 78:2. care curge întruna.

5 Nu*Lev. 19:15.Deut. 1:17;16:19. Cap. 24:23;28:21. este bine să ai în vedere fața celui rău,

ca să nedreptățești pe cel neprihănit la judecată.

6 Vorbele nebunului aduc ceartă

și gura lui înjură până stârnește lovituri.

7 Gura*Cap. 10:14;12:13;13:3.Ecl. 10:12. nebunului îi aduce pieirea

și buzele îi sunt o cursă pentru suflet.

8 Cuvintele*Cap. 12:18;26:22. bârfitorului sunt ca prăjiturile:

alunecă până în fundul măruntaielor.

9 Cine se lenevește în lucrul lui

este frate*Cap. 28:24. cu cel ce nimicește.

10 Numele Domnului este un turn*2 Sam. 22:3,51.Ps. 18:2;27:1;61:3,4;91:2;144:2. tare;

cel neprihănit fuge în el și stă la adăpost.

11 Averea*Cap. 10:15. este o cetate întărită pentru cel bogat;

în închipuirea lui, ea este un zid înalt.

12 Înainte*Cap. 11:2;15:33;16:18. de pieire, inima omului se îngâmfă,

dar smerenia merge înaintea slavei.

13 Cine răspunde fără*Ioan 7:51. să fi ascultat

face o prostie și își trage rușinea.

14 Duhul omului îl sprijină la boală.

Dar duhul doborât de întristare, cine-l va ridica?

15 O inimă pricepută dobândește știința

și urechea celor înțelepți caută știința.

16 Darurile*Gen. 32:20.1 Sam. 25:27. Cap. 17:8;21:14. unui om îi fac loc

și-i deschid intrarea înaintea celor mari.

17 Cel care vorbește întâi în pricina lui pare că are dreptate,

dar vine celălalt și-l ia la cercetare.

18 Sorțul pune capăt neînțelegerilor

și hotărăște între cei puternici.

19 Frații nedreptățiți sunt mai greu de câștigat decât o cetate întărită

și certurile lor sunt tot așa de greu de înlăturat ca zăvoarele unei case împărătești.

20 Din rodul*Cap. 12:14;13:2. gurii lui își satură omul trupul,

din venitul buzelor lui se satură.

21 Moartea*Mat. 12:37. și viața sunt în puterea limbii;

oricine o iubește îi va mânca roadele.

22 Cine*Cap. 19:14;31:10. găsește o nevastă bună găsește fericirea;

este un har pe care-l capătă de la Domnul.

23 Săracul vorbește rugându-se,

dar bogatul răspunde cu*Iac. 2:3. asprime.

24 Cine își face mulți prieteni îi face spre nenorocirea lui,

dar*Cap. 17:17. este un prieten care ține mai mult la tine decât un frate.
