1 When thou sittest to eat with a ruler,

Consider diligently him that is before thee;

2 And put a knife to thy throat,

If thou be a man given to appetite.

3 Be not desirous of his dainties;

Seeing they are deceitful food.

4 Weary not thyself to be rich;

Cease from thine own wisdom.

5 Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not?

For riches certainly make themselves wings,

Like an eagle that flieth toward heaven.

6 Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye,

Neither desire thou his dainties:

7 For as he thinketh within himself, so is he:

Eat and drink, saith he to thee;

But his heart is not with thee.

8 The morsel which thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up,

And lose thy sweet words.

9 Speak not in the hearing of a fool;

For he will despise the wisdom of thy words.

10 Remove not the ancient landmark;

And enter not into the fields of the fatherless:

11 For their Redeemer is strong;

He will plead their cause against thee.

12 Apply thy heart unto instruction,

And thine ears to the words of knowledge.

13 Withhold not correction from the child;

For if thou beat him with the rod, he will not die.

14 Thou shalt beat him with the rod,

And shalt deliver his soul from Sheol.

15 My son, if thy heart be wise,

My heart will be glad, even mine:

16 Yea, my heart will rejoice,

When thy lips speak right things.

17 Let not thy heart envy sinners;

But be thou in the fear of Jehovah all the day long:

18 For surely there is a reward;

And thy hope shall not be cut off.

19 Hear thou, my son, and be wise,

And guide thy heart in the way.

20 Be not among winebibbers,

Among gluttonous eaters of flesh:

21 For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty;

And drowsiness will clothe a man with rags.

22 Hearken unto thy father that begat thee,

And despise not thy mother when she is old.

23 Buy the truth, and sell it not;

Yea, wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.

24 The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice;

And he that begetteth a wise child will have joy of him.

25 Let thy father and thy mother be glad,

And let her that bare thee rejoice.

26 My son, give me thy heart;

And let thine eyes delight in my ways.

27 For a harlot is a deep ditch;

And a foreign woman is a narrow pit.

28 Yea, she lieth in wait as a robber,

And increaseth the treacherous among men.

29 Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions?

Who hath complaining? who hath wounds without cause?

Who hath redness of eyes?

30 They that tarry long at the wine;

They that go to seek out mixed wine.

31 Look not thou upon the wine when it is red,

When it sparkleth in the cup,

When it goeth down smoothly:

32 At the last it biteth like a serpent,

And stingeth like an adder.

33 Thine eyes shall behold strange things,

And thy heart shall utter perverse things.

34 Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea,

Or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast.

35 They have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not hurt;

They have beaten me, and I felt it not:

When shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.

3 Nu pofti mâncărurile lui alese,

căci sunt o hrană înșelătoare!

5 Abia ți-ai aruncat ochii spre ea, și nu mai este;

căci bogăția își face aripi

și, ca vulturul, își ia zborul spre ceruri.

6 Nu*Ps. 141:4. mânca pâinea celui*Deut. 15:9. pizmaș

și nu pofti mâncărurile lui alese,

7 căci el este ca unul care își face socotelile în suflet!

„Mănâncă și bea", îți*Ps. 12:2. va zice el,

dar inima lui nu este cu tine.

8 Bucata pe care ai mâncat-o o vei vărsa

și cuvintele plăcute pe care le vei spune sunt pierdute.

9 Nu vorbi la*Cap. 9:8.Mat. 7:6. urechea celui nebun,

căci el nesocotește cuvintele tale înțelepte!

10 Nu*Deut. 19:14;27:17. Cap. 22:28. muta hotarul văduvei

și nu intra în ogorul orfanilor,

11 căci*Iov 31:21. Cap. 22:23. Răzbunătorul lor este puternic:

El le va apăra pricina împotriva ta.

12 Deschide-ți inima la învățătură

și urechile la cuvintele științei!

13 Nu*Cap. 13:24;19:18;22:15;29:15,17. cruța copilul de mustrare,

căci, dacă-l vei lovi cu nuiaua, nu va muri!

14 Lovindu-l cu nuiaua,

15 Fiule, dacă-ți*Vers. 24,25. Cap. 29:3. va fi inima înțeleaptă,

inima mea se va bucura;

16 și lăuntrul meu se va veseli

când buzele tale vor spune ce este bine.

17 Să nu-ți pizmuiască inima*Ps. 37:1;73:3. Cap. 3:31;24:1. pe cei păcătoși,

ci*Cap. 28:14. să aibă totdeauna frică de Domnul,

18 căci*Ps. 37:37. Cap. 24:1.Luca 16:25. este o răsplată

și nu ți se va tăia nădejdea.

19 Ascultă, fiule, și fii înțelept;

îndreaptă-ți*Cap. 4:23. inima pe calea cea dreaptă!

20 Nu*Is. 5:22.Mat. 24:49.Luca 21:34.Rom. 13:13.Efes. 5:18. fi printre cei ce beau vin,

nici printre cei ce se îmbuibă cu carne!

21 Căci bețivul și cel ce se dedă la îmbuibare sărăcesc,

și ațipirea te face să porți*Cap. 19:15. zdrențe.

22 Ascultă*Cap. 1:8;30:17.Efes. 6:1,2. pe tatăl tău, care te-a născut,

și nu nesocoti pe mamă-ta când a îmbătrânit.

23 Cumpără*Cap. 4:5,7.Mat. 13:44. adevărul – și nu-l vinde –,

înțelepciunea, învățătura și priceperea.

24 Tatăl*Cap. 10:1;15:20;23:15. celui neprihănit se veselește

și cel ce dă naștere unui înțelept se bucură.

25 Să se bucure tatăl tău și mama ta,

să se veselească cea care te-a născut.

26 Fiule, dă-Mi inima ta

și să găsească plăcere ochii tăi în căile Mele!

27 Căci*Cap. 22:14. curva este o groapă adâncă

și străina, o fântână strâmtă.

28 Ea*Cap. 7:12.Ecl. 7:26. pândește ca un hoț

și mărește între oameni numărul celor stricați.

29 Ale*Is. 5:11,22. cui sunt vaietele? Ale cui sunt oftările? Ale cui sunt neînțelegerile?

Ale cui sunt plângerile? Ale cui sunt rănirile fără pricină?

Ai cui sunt ochii*Gen. 49:12. roșii?

30 Ale celor ce*Cap. 20:1.Efes. 5:18. întârzie la vin

și se duc să golească paharul cu vin amestecat.

31 Nu te uita la vin*Ps. 75:8. Cap. 9:2. când curge roșu

și face mărgăritare în pahar;

el alunecă ușor,

32 dar pe urmă ca un șarpe mușcă

și înțeapă ca un basilisc.

33 Ochii ți se vor uita după femeile altora

și inima îți va vorbi prostii.

34 Vei fi ca un om culcat în mijlocul mării,

ca un om culcat pe vârful unui catarg.

35 „M-a lovit*Cap. 27:22.Ier. 5:3.…, dar nu mă doare!…

M-a bătut…, dar nu*Efes. 4:19. simt nimic!

Când*Deut. 29:19.Is. 56:12. mă voi trezi? Mai vreau vin!"
