1 Be not many of you teachers, my brethren, knowing that we shall receive heavier judgment. 2 For in many things we all stumble. If any stumbleth not in word, the same is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body also. 3 Now if we put the horses’ bridles into their mouths that they may obey us, we turn about their whole body also. 4 Behold, the ships also, though they are so great and are driven by rough winds, are yet turned about by a very small rudder, whither the impulse of the steersman willeth. 5 So the tongue also is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how much wood is kindled by how small a fire! 6 And the tongue is a fire: the world of iniquity among our members is the tongue, which defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the wheel of nature, and is set on fire by hell. 7 For every kind of beasts and birds, of creeping things and things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed by mankind: 8 but the tongue can no man tame; it is a restless evil, it is full of deadly poison. 9 Therewith bless we the Lord and Father; and therewith curse we men, who are made after the likeness of God: 10 out of the same mouth cometh forth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be. 11 Doth the fountain send forth from the same opening sweet water and bitter? 12 can a fig tree, my brethren, yield olives, or a vine figs? neither can salt water yield sweet.

13 Who is wise and understanding among you? let him show by his good life his works in meekness of wisdom. 14 But if ye have bitter jealousy and faction in your heart, glory not and lie not against the truth. 15 This wisdom is not a wisdom that cometh down from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. 16 For where jealousy and faction are, there is confusion and every vile deed. 17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without variance, without hypocrisy. 18 And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace for them that make peace.

Cap. 1:26.1 Pet. 3:10. nu greșește cineva în vorbire, este*Mat. 12:37. un om desăvârșit și poate să-și țină în frâu tot trupul. 3 De pildă, dacă punem cailor*Ps. 32:9. frâul în gură, ca să ne asculte, le cârmuim tot trupul. 4 Iată, și corăbiile, cât de mari sunt, și, măcar că sunt mânate de vânturi iuți, totuși sunt cârmuite de o cârmă foarte mică, după gustul cârmaciului. 5 Tot așa și limba*Prov. 12:18;15:2. este un mic mădular și se fălește cu lucruri mari*Ps. 12:3;73:8,9.. Iată un foc mic ce pădure mare aprinde! 6 Limba*Prov. 16:27. este și ea un foc, este o lume de nelegiuiri. Ea este acela dintre mădularele noastre care întinează*Mat. 15:11,18-20.Marcu 7:15,20,23. tot trupul și aprinde roata vieții, când este aprinsă de focul gheenei. 7 Toate soiurile de fiare, de păsări, de târâtoare, de viețuitoare de mare se îmblânzesc și au fost îmblânzite de neamul omenesc, 8 dar limba niciun om n-o poate îmblânzi. Ea este un rău care nu se poate înfrâna, este plină*Ps. 140:3. de o otravă de moarte. 9 Cu ea binecuvântăm pe Domnul și Tatăl nostru și tot cu ea blestemăm pe oameni, care*Gen. 1:26;5:1;9:6. sunt făcuți după asemănarea lui Dumnezeu. 10 Din aceeași gură ies și binecuvântarea, și blestemul! Nu trebuie să fie așa, frații mei! 11 Oare din aceeași vână a izvorului țâșnește și apă dulce, și apă amară? 12 Frații mei, poate oare un smochin să facă măsline sau o viță să facă smochine? Nici apa sărată nu poate da apă dulce. 13 Cine*Gal. 6:4. dintre voi este înțelept și priceput? Să-și arate, prin purtarea lui bună, faptele*Cap. 2:18. făcute cu blândețea*Cap. 1:21. înțelepciunii! 14 Dar, dacă aveți în inima voastră pizmă*Rom. 13:13. amară și un duh de ceartă, să nu*Rom. 2:17,23. vă lăudați și să nu mințiți împotriva adevărului. 15 Înțelepciunea aceasta*Filip. 3:19. Cap. 1:17. nu vine de sus, ci este pământească, firească*3:15 Grecește: sufletească., drăcească. 16 Căci, acolo unde*1 Cor. 3:3.Gal. 5:20. este pizmă și duh de ceartă, este tulburare și tot felul de fapte rele. 17 Înțelepciunea*1 Cor. 2:6,7. care vine de sus este întâi curată, apoi pașnică, blândă, ușor de înduplecat, plină de îndurare și de roade bune, fără părtinire, nefățarnică*Rom. 12:9.1 Pet. 1:22;2:1.1 Ioan 3:18.. 18 Și*Prov. 11:18.Osea 10:12.Mat. 5:9.Filip. 1:11.Evr. 12:11. roada neprihănirii este semănată în pace pentru cei ce fac pace.
