1 Maccabees 3

1 Seu filho Judas, cognominado Macabeu, ficou em seu lugar.

2 Todos os seus irmãos o auxiliaram, bem como todos os que se tinham unido a seu pai, aceitando generosamente a promessa de combater por Israel.

3 Aumentou a glória do povo; revestiu-se da couraça, como um gigante, cingiu-se com as armas da guerra e empenhou-se nos combates, protegendo seu exército com a espada.

4 Assemelhava-se nas suas ações a um leão, e parecia um leãozinho, que ruge na caçada.

5 Perseguiu e rebuscou com cuidado os traidores e lançou ao fogo os que perseguiam seu povo.

6 Os maus recuaram diante dele transidos de medo, tremeram os que praticaram o mal e a salvação do povo firmou-se em suas mãos.

7 Seus feitos exasperaram os reis, mas alegraram Jacó, e sua memória permaneceu eternamente abençoada.

8 Percorreu as cidades de Judá, ex­pul­sando os ímpios, desviando assim de Israel a cólera divina.

9 Seu nome foi pronunciado até as extremidades da terra, e ele conseguiu a adesão daqueles que estavam a ponto de perecer.

10 Aconteceu que Apolônio convocou os gentios e, de Samaria, partiu com um grande exército para combater Israel.

11 Soube-o Judas, saiu-lhe ao encontro, venceu-o e o matou. Muitos caíram aos seus golpes e os restantes puseram-se em fuga.

12 Apoderou-se dos espólios, tomou a espada de Apolônio e desde então usava-a sempre nos combates.

13 Seron, general do exército sírio, veio a saber que Judas cercara-se de soldados fiéis convocados e que ele os levara ao combate.

14 "Vou tornar-me célebre – disse ele –, e cobrir-me de glória no reino. Vencerei Judas e suas tropas que se opõem às ordens do rei."

15 Armou-se ele para a guerra. Um poderoso exército de ímpios marchou com ele, para reforçar e tomar vingança dos filhos de Israel.

16 Avançaram até a muralha de Bet-Horon e Judas, seguido de poucos homens, foi-lhe ao encontro.

17 Mas, à vista do exército que vinha contra eles, os companheiros de Judas disseram-lhe: "Como poderemos enfrentar tamanho exército, se somos tão poucos, tanto mais que nos sentimos fracos, porque hoje nada temos comido?".

18 "É fácil – respondeu Judas – a um punhado de gente fazer-se respeitar por muitos. Para o Deus do céu não há diferença entre a salvação de uma multidão e a de um punhado de homens,

19 porque a vitória no combate não depende do número, mas da força que desce do céu.

20 Essa gente vem contra nós, com insolência e orgulho, para nos aniquilar, juntamente com nossas mulheres e nossos filhos, e para nos despojar.

21 Nós, porém, lutamos por nossas vidas e nossas leis.

22 O próprio Deus os esmagará aos nossos olhos. Não os temais."

23 E logo que cessara de falar, arrojou-se Judas com rapidez sobre os inimigos. Seron diante dele foi derrotado com seu exército.

24 Judas o perseguiu na descida de Bet-Horon até a planície. Morreram cerca de oitocentos sírios e os restantes fugiram para a terra dos filisteus.

25 E foi assim que se espalhou o terror de Judas e seus irmãos, e todos os povos das vizinhanças encheram-se de consternação.

26 Sua fama chegou aos ouvidos do rei. E todas as nações comentaram os feitos heroicos de Judas.

27 Quando o rei Antíoco soube dessas novas, encolerizou-se terrivelmente e reuniu todas as forças do reino, formando um exército poderosíssimo.

28 Abriu o tesouro e deu ao exército o soldo de um ano com a ordem de estarem prontos para qualquer eventualidade.

29 No entanto, viu que lhe faltava dinheiro no tesouro e que os tributos do território eram deficientes em vista das perturbações e da maldade que havia provocado, suprimindo em toda a parte as instituições em vigor desde outrora.

30 Temeu, portanto, não poder pagar as despesas, como fizera já uma ou duas vezes, e outorgar as liberalidades, que distribuía em certo tempo com mão generosa, porque excedia em liberalidade a todos os reis, seus predecessores.

31 Profundamente consternado, resol­veu ir à Pérsia cobrar os tributos dessas regiões e recolher muito dinheiro.

32 Deixou Lísias, pessoa de relevo, de linhagem real, para dirigir os negócios do reino, desde o rio Eufrates até as fronteiras do Egito,

33 e ocupar-se, até sua volta, de seu filho Antíoco.

34 Deixou-lhe a metade do exército do reino, com os elefantes e deu-lhe as instruções referentes à execução de seus planos, especialmente no que dizia respeito aos habitantes da Judeia e de Jerusalém.

35 Devia enviar um exército contra eles para destruir e aniquilar o poderio de Is­rael e o que restara de Jerusalém, e apagar desses lugares até a sua lembrança.

36 Depois, devia estabelecer em todos os seus confins estrangeiros, aos quais distribuiria as terras por meio de sorte.

37 O rei tomou a outra metade do exército, partiu de Antioquia, a capital de seu reino, no ano cento e quarenta e sete. Passou o Eufrates e atravessou as terras do planalto.

38 Lísias escolheu Ptolomeu, filho de Dorímenes, Nicanor e Górgias, valorosos generais e familiares do rei.

39 Enviou com estes quarenta mil soldados de infantaria e sete mil cavaleiros, para invadirem e devastarem o país de Judá, conforme a ordem do rei.

40 Postos a caminho com todas essas tropas, chegaram à planície perto de Emaús e penetraram nela.

41 Quando os mercadores ouviram falar deles, tomaram grande quantidade de prata e ouro e se dirigiram com peias ao campo para comprar os filhos de Israel como escravos. Exércitos da Síria, bem como do estrangeiro, vieram juntar-se a eles.

42 Judas e seus irmãos viram que a situação era grave e que as forças inimigas acampavam dentro de suas fronteiras. Sabendo também como o rei havia ordenado de tratar o povo para destruí-lo e exterminá-lo,

43 disseram uns aos outros: "Levantemos nossa pátria de seu abatimento e lutemos por nosso povo e por nosso lugar santo!".

44 Convocaram então toda a gente, a fim de se prepararem para a luta, de rezarem, de implorarem piedade e misericórdia de Deus.

45 Porquanto, Jerusalém estava desabitada e deserta: não havia um só de seus filhos que nela entrasse ou dela saísse. Seu santuário estava profanado, soldados estrangeiros ocupavam a fortaleza, gentios faziam ali sua habitação. Toda a alegria havia desaparecido de Jacó, e a flauta e a harpa estavam abandonadas.

46 Os israelitas se concentraram, pois, e se dirigiram a Masfa, defronte de Jerusalém, porque tinham tido outrora em Masfa, um local de oração.

47 Jejuaram naquele dia, vestiram-se com sacos, cobriram a cabeça com cinza e rasgaram suas vestes.

48 Abriram o Livro da Lei, para ler nele o que os gentios perguntavam às representações de seus falsos deuses.

49 Trouxeram os ornamentos sacerdotais, as primícias e os dízimos, e mandaram vir os nazarenos que tinham cumprido o tempo de seu voto.

50 Em seguida, sua voz se elevou com força ao céu: "O que faremos desta gente e para onde a levaremos?

51 Vosso santuário está profanado e manchado, vossos sacerdotes estão em luto e na humilhação.

52 As nações se coligaram para nos aniquilar e vós sabeis o que elas tramam contra nós.

53 Como resistir dian­te deles, se vós não vierdes em nosso auxílio?".

54 Então, eles soaram as trombetas e levantaram um grande clamor.

55 Depois disso, Judas nomeou chefes para grupos de mil, cem, cinquenta e dez homens.

56 E disse aos que acabavam de construir uma casa, de tomar mulher, plantar uma vinha, ou que tinham medo, que voltassem cada qual para sua casa, conforme a Lei.

57 Os israelitas se puseram então a caminho e vieram acampar ao sul de Emaús.

58 "Preparai-vos – disse-lhes Judas –, sede corajosos e estai prontos desde a manhã para o combate a essas nações que estão unidas para nos arruinar, a nós e tudo o que possuímos de sagrado.

59 Porquanto é preferível morrer no combate do que ver nosso povo perseguido e profanado nosso santuário.

60 Que se faça somente a vontade de Deus!"

1 His son Judas, who was called Maccabaeus, rose up in his place. 2 All his kindred helped him, and so did all those who joined with his father, and they fought with gladness the battle of Israel. 3 He got his people great glory, and put on a breastplate like a giant, and bound his warlike harness around him, and set battles in array, protecting the army with his sword. 4 He was like a lion in his deeds, and like a lion’s cub roaring for prey. 5 He hunted and pursued the lawless, and he burned up those who troubled his people. 6 The lawless shrunk back for fear of him, and all the workers of lawlessness were very troubled, and deliverance prospered in his hand. 7 He angered many kings and made Jacob glad with his acts. His memory is blessed forever. 8 He went through the cities of Judah, destroyed the ungodly out of the land, and turned away wrath from Israel. 9 He was renowned to the utmost part of the earth. He gathered together those who were ready to perish.

10 Apollonius gathered the Gentiles together with a great army from Samaria to fight against Israel. 11 Judas learned of it, and he went out to meet him, struck him, and killed him. Many fell wounded to death, and the rest fled. 12 They took their spoils, and Judas took Apollonius’ sword, and he fought with it all his days.

13 Seron, the commander of the army of Syria, heard that Judas had gathered a large company, including a body of faithful men who stayed with him, went out to war. 14 He said, "I will make myself a name and get myself glory in the kingdom. I will fight against Judas and those who are with him, who despise the king’s command. 15 A mighty army of the ungodly went up with him to help him, to take vengeance on the children of Israel.

16 He came near to the ascent of Bethhoron, and Judas went out to meet him with a small company. 17 But when they saw the army coming to meet them, they said to Judas, "What? Shall we be able, being a small company, to fight against so great and strong a multitude? We for our part are faint, having tasted no food this day."

18 Judas said, "It is an easy thing for many to be hemmed in by the hands of a few. With*3:18 Some ancient authorities read the God of heaven. heaven it is all one, to save by many or by few; 19 for victory in battle stands not in the multitude of an army, but strength is from heaven. 20 They come to us in fullness of insolence and lawlessness, to destroy us and our wives and our children, and to plunder us, 21 but we fight for our lives and our laws. 22 He himself will crush them before our face; but as for you, don’t be afraid of them.

23 Now when he had finished speaking, he rushed suddenly against Seron and his army, and they were defeated before him. 24 They pursued them down the descent of Bethhoron to the plain, and about eight hundred men of them fell; but the rest fled into the land of the Philistines.

25 The fear of Judas and his kindred, and the dread of them, began to fall on the nations around them. 26 His fame reached the king, and every nation told of the battles of Judas.

27 But when King Antiochus heard these words, he was full of indignation; and he sent and gathered together all the forces of his realm, an exceedingly strong army. 28 He opened his treasury and gave his forces pay for a year, and commanded them to be ready for every need. 29 He saw that the money was gone from his treasures, and that the tributes of the country were small, because of the dissension and disaster which he had brought upon the land, to the end that he might take away the laws which had been from the first days. 30 He was afraid that he wouldn’t have enough as at other times for the charges and the gifts which he used to give with a liberal hand, more abundantly than the kings who were before him. 31 And he was exceedingly perplexed in his mind, and he determined to go into Persia, and to take the tributes of those countries, and to gather much money. 32 He left Lysias, an honorable man, and one of royal lineage, to be over the affairs of the king from the river Euphrates to the borders of Egypt, 33 and to bring up his son Antiochus, until he came again. 34 He delivered to Lysias half of his forces and the elephants, and gave him charge of all the things that he would have done, and concerning those who lived in Judea and in Jerusalem, 35 that he should send an army against them to root out and destroy the strength of Israel and the remnant of Jerusalem, and to take away their memory from the place, 36 and that he should make foreigners live in all their territory, and should divide their land to them by lot. 37 The king took the half that remained of the forces, and left Antioch, his royal city, in the one hundred forty seventh year;*3:37 circa B.C. 166. and he passed over the river Euphrates, and went through the upper countries.

38 Lysias chose Ptolemy the son of Dorymenes, Nicanor, and Gorgias, mighty men of the king’s friends;*3:38 See 1 Maccabees 2:18. 39 and with them, he sent forty thousand infantry and seven thousand cavalry to go into the land of Judah and to destroy it, according to the word of the king. 40 They set out with all their army, and came and encamped near Emmaus in the plain country. 41 The merchants of the country heard of their fame, and took silver and gold in large quantities, and fetters,*3:41 Most of the authorities read servants. and came into the camp to take the children of Israel for slaves. Forces of Syria and of the land of the Philistines*3:41 Gr. foreigners. joined with them.

42 Judas and his kindred saw that evils were multiplied, and that the forces were encamping in their borders. They learned about the king’s words which he had commanded, to destroy the people and make an end of them. 43 Then they each said to his neighbor, "Let’s repair the ruins of our people. Let’s fight for our people and the holy place." 44 The congregation was gathered together, that they might be ready for battle, and that they might pray and ask for mercy and compassion. 45 Jerusalem was without inhabitant like a wilderness. There was none of her offspring who went in or went out. The sanctuary was trampled down. Children of foreigners were in the citadel. The Gentiles lived there. Joy was taken away from Jacob, and the pipe and the harp ceased. 46 They gathered themselves together, and came to Mizpeh, near Jerusalem; for in Mizpeh there used to be a place of prayer for Israel. 47 They fasted that day, put on sackcloth, put ashes on their heads, tore their clothes, 48 and opened the book of the law, to learn about the things for which the Gentiles consulted the images of their idols. 49 They brought the priests’ garments, the first fruits, and the tithes. They stirred up the Nazarites, who had accomplished their days. 50 They cried aloud toward heaven, saying, "What should we do with these men? Where should we carry them away? 51 Your holy place is trampled down and profaned. Your priests mourn in humiliation. 52 Behold, the Gentiles are assembled together against us to destroy us. You know what things they imagine against us. 53 How will we be able to stand against them, unless you help us?" 54 They sounded with the trumpets, and gave a loud shout.

55 And after this Judas appointed leaders of the people: captains of thousands, captains of hundreds, captains of fifties, and captains of tens. 56 He said to those who were building houses, were betrothing wives, were planting vineyards, and were fearful, that they should return, each man to his own house, according to the law. 57 The army marched out and encamped upon the south side of Emmaus. 58 Judas said, "Arm yourselves and be valiant men! Be ready in the morning to fight with these Gentiles who are assembled together against us to destroy us and our holy place. 59 For it is better for us to die in battle than to see the calamities of our nation and the holy place. 60 Nevertheless, as may be the will in heaven, so shall he do.
