Tobit 10

1 O casamento de Tobias tinha retardado a sua volta. Seu pai, muito inquieto, dizia: "Por que será que meu filho tarda tanto? Por que se demora lá?

2 Teria Gabael porventura falecido, de sorte que não haveria ninguém para restituir o dinheiro?".

3 Ele entristeceu-se extremamente com isso, assim como Ana, sua mulher, e ambos se puseram a chorar, porque seu filho não voltava no tempo previsto.

4 Ana, principalmente, derramava lágrimas inesgotáveis e dizia: "Ai, ai, meu filho! Por que te mandamos lá? Tu que eras a luz de nossos olhos, o bordão de nossa velhice, a consolação de nossa vida e a esperança de nossa raça!

5 Nós, que em ti só tínhamos tudo, não te devíamos ter deixado ir para longe de nós".

6 Tobit dizia-lhe: "Cala-te, não te aflijas! Nosso filho está passando bem. Aquele homem com quem nós o mandamos é um homem de confiança".

7 Mas ela continuava inconsolável. Todos os dias saía para fora, olhava para todos os lados e corria por todos os caminhos, por onde poderia voltar o filho, a fim de vê-lo ao longe, se fosse possível.

8 Entretanto, Raguel dizia ao seu genro: "Fica aqui, mandarei notícias a Tobit, teu pai, a respeito de tua saúde".

9 Mas Tobias disse-lhe: "Sei que meu pai e minha mãe contam os dias e que se acham em grande tormento".

10 Raguel insistiu ainda, apresentando muitas razões, mas Tobias não quis ouvi-lo. Então, entregou-lhe Sara com a metade de seus bens: escravos e escravas, bois e ovelhas, asnos e camelos, roupas, dinheiro e utensílios. E deixou-os partir com saúde e alegria.

11 Ao despedir-se de Tobias, disse: "Que o santo anjo do Senhor vos acompanhe pelo caminho e vos conduza sãos e salvos. Faço votos de que encontreis tudo em ordem em casa de vossos pais e que eu possa ver os vossos filhos antes de morrer!".

12 Os pais beijaram sua filha e deixaram-na partir,

13 recomendando-lhe que honrasse seus sogros, amasse o seu marido, educasse bem a sua família e governasse a sua casa, conservando-se ela mesma irrepreensível.

1 Tobit his father counted every day. When the days of the journey were expired, and they didn’t come, 2 he said, "Is he perchance detained?*10:2 Many ancient authorities read "Are they perchance put to shame?" Or is Gabael perchance dead, and there is no one to give him the money?" 3 He was very grieved.

4 But his wife said to him, "The child has perished, seeing he waits long." She began to bewail him, and said, 5 "I care about nothing,*10:5 Some authorities read "Woe is me." my child, since I have let you go, the light of my eyes." 6 Tobit said to her, "Hold your peace. Don’t worry. He is in good health."

7 And she said to him, "Hold your peace. Don’t deceive me. My child has perished." And she went out every day into the way by which they went, and ate no bread in the day-time, and didn’t stop bewailing her son Tobias for whole nights, until the fourteen days of the wedding feast were expired, which Raguel had sworn that he should spend there.

Then Tobias said to Raguel, "Send me away, for my father and my mother look no more to see me." 8 But his father-in-law said to him, "Stay with me, and I will send to your father, and they will declare to him how things go with you." 9 Tobias said, "No. Send me away to my father."

10 Raguel arose, and gave him Sarah his wife, and half his goods, servants and cattle and money; 11 and he blessed them, and sent them away, saying, "The God of heaven will prosper you, my children, before I die." 12 And he said to his daughter, "Honor your father-in-law and your mother-in-law. They are now your parents. Let me hear a good report of you." Then he kissed her.

Edna said to Tobias, "May the Lord of heaven restore you, dear brother, and grant to me that I may see your children of my daughter Sarah, that I may rejoice before the Lord. Behold, I commit my daughter to you in special trust. Don’t cause her grief.
