As a number of attempts have been made to put together in order an account of those events which took place among us, 
As they were handed down to us by those who saw them from the first and were preachers of the word, 
It seemed good to me, having made observation, with great care, of the direction of events in their order, to put the facts in writing for you, most noble Theophilus; 
So that you might have certain knowledge of those things about which you were given teaching. 
In the days of Herod, king of Judaea, there was a certain priest, by name Zacharias, of the order of Abijah; and he had a wife of the family of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth. 
They were upright in the eyes of God, keeping all the rules and orders of God, and doing no wrong. 
And they were without children, because Elisabeth had never given birth, and they were at that time very old. 
Now it came about that in his turn he was acting as priest before God, 
And as was the way of the priests, he had to go into the Temple to see to the burning of perfumes. 
And all the people were offering prayers outside, at the time of the burning of perfumes. 
And he saw an angel of the Lord in his place on the right side of the altar. 
And Zacharias was troubled when he saw him, and fear came on him. 
But the angel said, Have no fear, Zacharias, for your prayer has come to the ears of God, and your wife Elisabeth will have a son, and his name will be John. 
And you will be glad and have great delight; and numbers of people will have joy at his birth. 
For he will be great in the eyes of the Lord; he will not take wine or strong drink; and he will be full of the Spirit of God from his birth. 
And through him great numbers of the children of Israel will be turned to the Lord their God. 
And he will go before his face in the spirit and power of Elijah, turning the hearts of fathers to their children, and wrongdoers to the way of righteousness; to make ready a people whose hearts have been turned to the Lord. 
And Zacharias said to the angel, How may I be certain of this? For I am an old man, and my wife is far on in years. 
And the angel, answering, said, I am Gabriel, whose place is before God; I have been sent to say these words to you and to give you this good news. 
Now, see, you will be without voice or language till the day when these things come about, because you had not faith in my words, which will have effect at the right time. 
And the people were waiting for Zacharias and were surprised because he was in the Temple for such a long time. 
And when he came out he was not able to say anything, and they saw that he had seen a vision in the Temple; and he was making signs to them without words. 
And when the days of his work in the Temple were ended, he went back to his house. 
After that time, Elisabeth, being certain that she was to become a mother, kept herself from men's eyes for five months, saying, 
The Lord has done this to me, for his eyes were on me, to take away my shame in the eyes of men. 
Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town in Galilee, named Nazareth, 
To a virgin who was to be married to a man named Joseph, of the family of David; and the name of the virgin was Mary. 
And the angel came in to her and said, Peace be with you, to whom special grace has been given; the Lord is with you. 
But she was greatly troubled at his words, and said to herself, What may be the purpose of these words? 
And the angel said to her, Have no fear, Mary, for you have God's approval. 
And see, you will give birth to a son, and his name will be Jesus. 
He will be great, and will be named the Son of the Most High: and the Lord God will give him the kingdom of David, his father: 
He will have rule over the house of Jacob for ever, and of his kingdom there will be no end. 
And Mary said to the angel, How may this be, because I have had no knowledge of a man? 
And the angel in answer said to her, The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will come to rest on you, and so that which will come to birth will be named holy, Son of God. 
Even now Elisabeth, who is of your family, is to be a mother, though she is old: and this is the sixth month with her who was without children. 
For there is nothing which God is not able to do. 
And Mary said: I am the servant of the Lord; may it be to me as you say. And the angel went away. 
Then Mary got up and went quickly into the high lands, to a town of Judah; 
And went into the house of Zacharias and took Elisabeth in her arms. 
And when the voice of Mary came to the ears of Elisabeth, the baby made a sudden move inside her; then Elisabeth was full of the Holy Spirit, 
And she said with a loud voice: May blessing be on you among women, and a blessing on the child of your body. 
How is it that the mother of my Lord comes to me? 
For, truly, when the sound of your voice came to my ears, the baby in my body made a sudden move for joy. 
Happy will she be who had faith that the things which the Lord has said to her will be done. 
And Mary said: My soul gives glory to God; 
My spirit is glad in God my Saviour. 
For he has had pity on his servant, though she is poor and lowly placed: and from this hour will all generations give witness to the blessing which has come to me. 
For he who is strong has done great things for me; and holy is his name. 
His mercy is for all generations in whom is the fear of him. 
With his arm he has done acts of power; he has put to flight those who have pride in their hearts. 
He has put down kings from their seats, lifting up on high the men of low degree. 
Those who had no food he made full of good things; the men of wealth he sent away with nothing in their hands; 
His help he has given to Israel, his servant, so that he might keep in mind his mercy to Abraham and his seed for ever, 
As he gave his word to our fathers. 
And Mary was with her for about three months and then went back to her house. 
Now it was time for Elisabeth to give birth, and she had a son. 
And it came to the ears of her neighbours and relations that the Lord had been very good to her, and they took part in her joy. 
And on the eighth day they came to see to the circumcision of the child, and they would have given him the name of Zacharias, his father's name; 
But his mother made answer and said, No, his name is John. 
And they said, Not one of your relations has that name. 
And they made signs to his father, to say what name was to be given to him. 
And he sent for writing materials and put down: His name is John; and they were all surprised. 
And straight away his mouth was open and his tongue was free and he gave praise to God. 
And fear came on all those who were living round about them: and there was much talk about all these things in all the hill-country of Judaea. 
And all who had word of them kept them in their minds and said, What will this child be? For the hand of the Lord was with him. 
And his father, Zacharias, was full of the Holy Spirit, and with the voice of a prophet said these words: 
Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, for he has come to his people and made them free, 
Lifting up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David, 
(As he said, by the mouth of his holy prophets, from the earliest times,) 
Salvation from those who are against us, and from the hands of those who have hate for us; 
To do acts of mercy to our fathers and to keep in mind his holy word, 
The oath which he made to Abraham, our father, 
That we, being made free from the fear of those who are against us, might give him worship, 
In righteousness and holy living before him all our days. 
And you, child, will be named the prophet of the Most High: you will go before the face of the Lord, to make ready his ways; 
To give knowledge of salvation to his people, through the forgiveness of sins, 
Because of the loving mercies of our God, by which the dawn from heaven has come to us, 
To give light to those in dark places, and in the shade of death, so that our feet may be guided into the way of peace. 
And the child became tall, and strong in spirit; and he was living in the waste land till the day when he came before the eyes of Israel. 

Sintemal es viele unternommen haben, eine Erzählung von den Dingen, {O. Ereignissen} die unter uns völlig geglaubt werden, {O. unter uns völlig erwiesen (beglaubigt) sind} zu verfassen, {Eig. der Reihe nach aufzustellen} 
so wie es uns die überliefert haben, welche von Anfang an Augenzeugen und Diener des Wortes gewesen sind, 
hat es auch mir gut geschienen, der ich allem von Anfang an genau gefolgt bin, es dir, vortrefflichster Theophilus, der Reihe nach zu schreiben; 
auf daß du die Zuverlässigkeit der Dinge erkennest, in welchen du unterrichtet worden bist. 
Es war in den Tagen Herodes', des Königs von Judäa, ein gewisser Priester, mit Namen Zacharias, aus der Abteilung Abias; und sein Weib war aus den Töchtern Aarons, und ihr Name Elisabeth. 
Beide aber waren gerecht vor Gott, indem sie untadelig wandelten in allen Geboten und Satzungen des Herrn. 
Und sie hatten kein Kind, weil Elisabeth unfruchtbar war; und beide waren in ihren Tagen weit vorgerückt. 
Es geschah aber, als er in der Ordnung seiner Abteilung den priesterlichen Dienst vor Gott erfüllte, 
traf ihn, nach der Gewohnheit des Priestertums, das Los, in den Tempel {das Heiligtum} des Herrn zu gehen, um zu räuchern. 
Und die ganze Menge des Volkes war betend draußen zur Stunde des Räucherns. 
Es erschien ihm aber ein Engel des Herrn, {S. die Anm. zu Mat. 1,20} zur Rechten des Räucheraltars stehend. 
Und als Zacharias ihn sah, ward er bestürzt, und Furcht überfiel ihn. 
Der Engel aber sprach zu ihm: Fürchte dich nicht, Zacharias; denn dein Flehen ist erhört, und dein Weib Elisabeth wird dir einen Sohn gebären, und du sollst seinen Namen Johannes {d. i. Jehova ist gütig (gnädig)} heißen. 
Und er wird dir zur Freude und Wonne sein, {O. Und du wirst Freude und Wonne haben} und viele werden sich über seine Geburt freuen. 
Denn er wird groß sein vor dem Herrn; weder Wein noch starkes Getränk wird er trinken und schon von Mutterleibe an mit Heiligem Geiste erfüllt werden. 
Und viele der Söhne Israels wird er zu dem Herrn, ihrem Gott, bekehren. 
Und er wird vor ihm hergehen in dem Geist und der Kraft des Elias, um der Väter Herzen zu bekehren zu den Kindern und Ungehorsame zur Einsicht von Gerechten, um dem Herrn ein zugerüstetes Volk zu bereiten. 
Und Zacharias sprach zu dem Engel: Woran soll ich dies erkennen? denn ich bin ein alter Mann, und mein Weib ist weit vorgerückt in ihren Tagen. 
Und der Engel antwortete und sprach zu ihm: Ich bin Gabriel, der vor Gott steht, und ich bin gesandt worden, zu dir zu reden und dir diese gute Botschaft zu verkündigen. 
Und siehe, du wirst stumm sein und nicht sprechen können bis zu dem Tage, da dieses geschehen wird, weil du meinen Worten nicht geglaubt hast, die zu ihrer Zeit werden erfüllt werden. 
Und das Volk wartete auf Zacharias, und sie wunderten sich darüber, daß er im Tempel {das Heiligtum} verzog. 
Als er aber herauskam, konnte er nicht zu ihnen reden, und sie erkannten, daß er im Tempel {das Heiligtum} ein Gesicht gesehen hatte. Und er winkte ihnen zu und blieb stumm. 
Und es geschah, als die Tage seines Dienstes erfüllt waren, ging er weg nach seinem Hause. 
Nach diesen Tagen aber wurde Elisabeth, sein Weib, schwanger und verbarg sich fünf Monate, indem sie sagte: 
Also hat mir der Herr getan in den Tagen, in welchen er mich angesehen hat, um meine Schmach unter den Menschen wegzunehmen. 
Im sechsten Monat aber wurde der Engel Gabriel von Gott gesandt in eine Stadt von Galiläa, mit Namen Nazareth, 
zu einer Jungfrau, die einem Manne verlobt war mit Namen Joseph, aus dem Hause Davids; und der Name der Jungfrau war Maria. 
Und der Engel kam zu ihr hinein und sprach: Sei gegrüßt, Begnadigte! der Herr ist mit dir; [gesegnet bist du unter den Weibern!] 
Sie aber, [als sie ihn sah,] ward bestürzt über sein Wort und überlegte, was dies für ein Gruß sei. 
Und der Engel sprach zu ihr: Fürchte dich nicht, Maria, denn du hast Gnade {O. Gunst} bei Gott gefunden; 
und siehe, du wirst im Leibe empfangen und einen Sohn gebären, und du sollst seinen Namen Jesus heißen. 
Dieser wird groß sein und Sohn des Höchsten genannt werden; und der Herr, Gott, {d. i. Jehova-Elohim des Alten Testaments} wird ihm den Thron seines Vaters David geben; 
und er wird über das Haus Jakobs herrschen in die Zeitalter, und seines Reiches wird kein Ende sein. 
Maria aber sprach zu dem Engel: Wie wird dies sein, dieweil ich keinen Mann kenne? 
Und der Engel antwortete und sprach zu ihr: Der Heilige Geist wird über dich kommen, und Kraft des Höchsten wird dich überschatten; darum wird auch das Heilige, das geboren {O. gezeugt} werden wird, Sohn Gottes genannt werden. 
Und siehe, Elisabeth, deine Verwandte, ist auch mit einem Sohne schwanger in ihrem Alter, und dies ist der sechste Monat bei ihr, welche unfruchtbar genannt war; 
denn bei Gott wird kein Ding unmöglich sein. {And. üb.: denn von seiten Gottes wird kein Wort unmöglich (kraftlos) sein} 
Maria aber sprach: Siehe, ich bin die Magd {O. Sklavin; so auch V. 48} des Herrn; es geschehe mir nach deinem Worte. Und der Engel schied von ihr. 
Maria aber stand in selbigen Tagen auf und ging mit Eile nach dem Gebirge, in eine Stadt Judas; 
und sie kam in das Haus des Zacharias und begrüßte die Elisabeth. 
Und es geschah, als Elisabeth den Gruß der Maria hörte, hüpfte das Kind in ihrem Leibe; und Elisabeth wurde mit Heiligem Geiste erfüllt 
und rief aus mit lauter Stimme und sprach: Gesegnet {O. Gepriesen} bist du unter den Weibern, und gesegnet {O. Gepriesen} ist die Frucht deines Leibes! 
Und woher mir dieses, daß die Mutter meines Herrn zu mir kommt? 
Denn siehe, wie die Stimme deines Grußes in meine Ohren drang, hüpfte das Kind vor Freude in meinem Leibe. 
Und glückselig, die geglaubt hat, denn es wird zur Erfüllung kommen, was von dem Herrn zu ihr geredet ist! - 
Und Maria sprach: Meine Seele erhebt den Herrn, 
und mein Geist hat frohlockt in Gott, meinem Heilande; 
denn {O. daß} er hat hingeblickt auf die Niedrigkeit seiner Magd; denn siehe, von nun an werden mich glückselig preisen alle Geschlechter. 
Denn große Dinge hat der Mächtige an mir getan, und heilig ist sein Name; 
und seine Barmherzigkeit ist von Geschlecht zu Geschlecht über die, welche ihn fürchten. 
Er hat Macht geübt mit seinem Arm; er hat zerstreut, die in der Gesinnung ihres Herzens hochmütig sind. 
Er hat Mächtige von Thronen hinabgestoßen, und Niedrige erhöht. 
Hungrige hat er mit Gütern erfüllt, und Reiche leer fortgeschickt. 
Er hat sich Israels, seines Knechtes, angenommen, damit er eingedenk sei der Barmherzigkeit, 
(wie er zu unseren Vätern geredet hat,) gegen Abraham und seinen Samen in Ewigkeit. - 
Und Maria blieb ungefähr drei Monate bei ihr; und sie kehrte nach ihrem Hause zurück. 
Für Elisabeth aber wurde die Zeit erfüllt, daß sie gebären sollte, und sie gebar einen Sohn. 
Und ihre Nachbarn und Verwandten hörten, daß der Herr seine Barmherzigkeit an ihr groß gemacht habe, und sie freuten sich mit ihr. 
Und es geschah am achten Tage, da kamen sie, das Kindlein zu beschneiden; und sie nannten es nach dem Namen seines Vaters: Zacharias. 
Und seine Mutter antwortete und sprach: Nein, sondern er soll Johannes heißen. 
Und sie sprachen zu ihr: Niemand ist aus deiner Verwandtschaft, der diesen Namen trägt. 
Sie winkten aber seinem Vater zu, wie er etwa wolle, daß er genannt werde. 
Und er forderte ein Täfelchen und schrieb also: Johannes ist sein Name. Und sie verwunderten sich alle. 
Alsbald aber wurde sein Mund aufgetan und seine Zunge gelöst, und er redete, indem er Gott lobte. 
Und Furcht kam über alle, die um sie her wohnten; und auf dem ganzen Gebirge von Judäa wurden alle diese Dinge besprochen. 
Und alle, die es hörten, nahmen es zu Herzen und sprachen: Was wird doch aus diesem Kindlein werden? Denn auch des Herrn Hand war mit ihm. 
Und Zacharias, sein Vater, wurde mit Heiligem Geiste erfüllt und weissagte und sprach: 
Gepriesen sei der Herr, der Gott Israels, daß er besucht und Erlösung geschafft hat seinem Volke, 
und uns ein Horn des Heils aufgerichtet hat in dem Hause Davids, seines Knechtes, 
(gleichwie er geredet hat durch den Mund seiner heiligen Propheten, die von alters her waren,) 
Rettung von unseren Feinden und von der Hand aller, die uns hassen; 
um Barmherzigkeit zu vollbringen an unseren Vätern und seines heiligen Bundes zu gedenken, 
des Eides, den er Abraham, unserem Vater, geschworen hat, um uns zu geben, 
daß wir, gerettet aus der Hand unserer Feinde, ohne Furcht ihm dienen sollen 
in Frömmigkeit und Gerechtigkeit vor ihm alle unsere Tage. 
Und du, Kindlein, wirst ein Prophet des Höchsten genannt werden; denn du wirst vor dem Angesicht des Herrn hergehen, seine Wege zu bereiten, 
um seinem Volke Erkenntnis des Heils zu geben in Vergebung ihrer Sünden, 
durch die herzliche Barmherzigkeit unseres Gottes, in welcher uns besucht hat der Aufgang aus der Höhe, 
um denen zu leuchten, die in Finsternis und Todesschatten sitzen, um unsere Füße zu richten auf den Weg des Friedens. 
Das Kindlein aber wuchs und erstarkte im Geist, und war in den Wüsteneien bis zum Tage seines Auftretens vor Israel.
