1 În zilele acelea, cînd s'a înmulţit numărul ucenicilor, Evreii cari vorbeau greceşte, cîrteau împotriva Evreilor, pentrucă văduvele lor erau trecute cu vederea la împărţeala ajutoarelor de toate zilele.2 Cei doisprezece au adunat mulţimea ucenicilor, şi au zis: ,,Nu este potrivit pentru noi să lăsăm Cuvîntul lui Dumnezeu ca să slujim la mese.3 Deaceea, fraţilor, alegeţi dintre voi şapte bărbaţi, vorbiţi de bine, plini de Duhul Sfînt şi înţelepciune, pe cari îi vom pune la slujba aceasta.4 Iar noi vom stărui necurmat în rugăciune şi în propovăduirea Cuvîntului.``5 Vorbirea aceasta a plăcut întregei adunări. Au ales pe Ştefan, bărbat plin de credinţă şi de Duhul Sfînt, pe Filip, pe Prohor, pe Nicanor, pe Timon, pe Parmena şi pe Nicolae, un prozelit din Antiohia.6 I-au adus înaintea apostolilor, cari, după ce s-au rugat, şi-au pus mînile peste ei.7 Cuvîntul lui Dumnezeu se răspîndea tot mai mult, numărul ucenicilor se înmulţea mult în Ierusalim, şi o mare mulţime de preoţi veneau la credinţă.8 Ştefan era plin de har şi de putere, şi făcea minuni şi semne mari în norod.9 Unii din sinagoga, numită a Izbăviţilor, a Cirinenilor, şi a Alexandrinilor, împreună cu nişte Iudei din Cilicia şi din Asia, au început o ceartă de vorbe cu Ştefan;10 dar nu puteau să stea împotriva înţelepciunii şi Duhului cu care vorbea el.11 Atunci au pus la cale pe nişte oameni să zică: ,,Noi l-am auzit rostind cuvinte de hulă împotriva lui Moise şi împotriva lui Dumnezeu.``12 Au întărîtat norodul, pe bătrîni şi pe cărturari, au năvălit asupra lui, au pus mîna pe el, şi l-au dus în Sobor.13 Au scos nişte martori mincinoşi, cari au zis: ,,Omul acesta nu încetează să spună cuvinte de hulă împotriva acestui locaş sfînt şi împotriva Legii.14 În adevăr, l-am auzit zicînd că acest Isus din Nazaret va dărîma locaşul acesta, şi va schimba obiceiurile, pe cari ni le -a dat Moise.``15 Toţi cei ce şedeau în Sobor, s'au uitat ţintă la Ştefan, şi faţa lui li s'a arătat ca o faţă de înger.

1 And in these days, the disciples multiplying, there came a murmuring of the Hellenists at the Hebrews, because their widows were being overlooked in the daily ministration,2 and the twelve, having called near the multitude of the disciples, said, `It is not pleasing that we, having left the word of God, do minister at tables;3 look out, therefore, brethren, seven men of you who are well testified of, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may set over this necessity,4 and we to prayer, and to the ministration of the word, will give ourselves continually.`5 And the thing was pleasing before all the multitude, and they did choose Stephen, a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolaus, a proselyte of Antioch,6 whom they did set before the apostles, and they, having prayed, laid on them [their] hands.7 And the word of God did increase, and the number of the disciples did multiply in Jerusalem exceedingly; a great multitude also of the priests were obedient to the faith.8 And Stephen, full of faith and power, was doing great wonders and signs among the people,9 and there arose certain of those of the synagogue, called of the Libertines, and Cyrenians, and Alexandrians, and of those from Cilicia, and Asia, disputing with Stephen,10 and they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit with which he was speaking;11 then they suborned men, saying -- `We have heard him speaking evil sayings in regard to Moses and God.`12 They did stir up also the people, and the elders, and the scribes, and having come upon [him], they caught him, and brought [him] to the sanhedrim;13 they set up also false witnesses, saying, `This one doth not cease to speak evil sayings against this holy place and the law,14 for we have heard him saying, That this Jesus the Nazarean shall overthrow this place, and shall change the customs that Moses delivered to us;`15 and gazing at him, all those sitting in the sanhedrim saw his face as it were the face of a messenger.
