1 Marele preot a zis: ,,Aşa stau lucrurile?``2 Ştefan a răspuns: ,,Fraţilor şi părinţilor, ascultaţi! Dumnezeul slavei S'a arătat părintelui nostru Avraam, cînd era în Mesopotamia, înainte ca să se aşeze în Haran.3 Şi i -a zis: ,Ieşi din ţara ta şi din familia ta, şi du-te în ţara, pe care ţi -o voi arăta.``4 El a ieşit atunci din ţara Haldeilor, şi s'a aşezat în Haran. De acolo, după moartea tatălui său, Dumnezeu l -a strămutat în ţara aceasta, în care locuiţi voi acum.5 Din ţara aceea nu i -a dat nimic în stăpînire, nici măcar o palmă de loc, ci i -a făgăduit că i -o va da în stăpînire lui, şi seminţei lui după el, măcar că n'avea niciun copil.6 Dumnezeu i -a spus că sămînţa lui va locui într -o ţară străină, va fi robită, şi va fi chinuită patru sute de ani.7 ,Dar neamul, căruia îi vor fi robi, îl voi judeca Eu`, a zis Dumnezeu. ,După aceea, vor ieşi, şi-Mi vor sluji în locul acesta.`8 Apoi i -a dat legămîntul tăierii împrejur; şi astfel Avraam, cînd a născut pe Isaac, l -a tăiat împrejur în ziua a opta; Isaac a născut şi a tăiat împrejur pe Iacov, şi Iacov pe cei doisprezece patriarhi.9 Iar patriarhii, cari pizmuiau pe Iosif, l-au vîndut, ca să fie dus în Egipt. Dar Dumnezeu a fost cu el,10 şi l -a izbăvit din toate necazurile lui; i -a dat înţelepciune şi trecere înaintea lui Faraon, împăratul Egiptului, care l -a pus dregător peste Egipt şi peste toată casa lui.11 A venit o foamete în tot Egiptul şi Canaanul. Nevoia era mare, şi părinţii noştri nu găseau merinde.12 Iacov a auzit că în Egipt era grîu, şi a trimes pe părinţii noştri întîiaş dată acolo.13 Şi cînd au venit a doua oară, Iosif a fost cunoscut de fraţii săi, şi Faraon a aflat din ce neam era Iosif.14 Apoi Iosif a trimes să cheme pe tatăl său Iacov şi pe toată familia lui, şaptezeci şi cinci de suflete.15 Iacov s'a pogorît în Egipt, unde a murit el şi părinţii noştri.16 Şi au fost strămutaţi la Sihem, şi puşi în mormîntul, pe care îl cumpărase Avraam cu o sumă de bani dela fiii lui Emor, în Sihem.17 Se apropia vremea cînd trebuia să se împlinească făgăduinţa, pe care o făcuse Dumnezeu lui Avraam. Norodul a crescut şi s'a înmulţit în Egipt,18 pînă cînd s'a ridicat un alt împărat, care nu cunoştea pe Iosif.19 Împăratul acesta a uneltit împotriva neamului nostru, şi a chinuit pe părinţii noştri, pînă acolo ca să-şi lepede pruncii, ca să nu trăiască.20 Pe vremea aceasta s'a născut Moise, care era frumos înaintea lui Dumnezeu. El a fost hrănit trei luni în casa tatălui său.21 Şi cînd a fost lepădat, l -a luat fiica lui Faraon, şi l -a crescut ca pe copilul ei.22 Moise a învăţat toată înţelepciunea Egiptenilor, şi era puternic în cuvinte şi în fapte.23 El avea patruzeci de ani, cînd i -a venit în inimă dorinţa să cerceteze pe fraţii săi, pe fiii lui Israel.24 A văzut pe unul din ei suferind nedreptate; i -a luat apărarea, a răzbunat pe cel asuprit, şi a omorît pe Egiptean.25 Credea că fraţii lui vor pricepe că Dumnezeu prin mîna lui le va da izbăvirea; dar n'au priceput.26 A doua zi, cînd se băteau ei, Moise a venit în mijlocul lor, şi i -a îndemnat la pace. ,Oamenilor`, a zis el, ,voi sînteţi fraţi; de ce vă nedreptăţiţi unul pe altul?`27 Dar cel ce nedreptăţea pe aproapele său, l -a îmbrîncit, şi i -a zis: ,Cine te -a pus pe tine stăpînitor şi judecător peste noi?28 Vrei să mă omori şi pe mine cum ai omorît ieri pe Egiptean?`29 La auzul acestor vorbe, Moise a fugit, şi s'a dus de a locuit ca străin în pămîntul Madian, unde a născut doi fii.30 Peste patruzeci de ani, i s'a arătat un înger în pustia muntelui Sinai, în para focului unui rug.31 Moise, cînd l -a văzut, s'a mirat de arătarea aceasta; şi, pe cînd se apropia să vadă ce este, a auzit glasul Domnului,32 care i -a zis: ,Eu sînt Dumnezeul părinţilor tăi, Dumnezeul lui Avraam, Dumnezeul lui Isaac, şi Dumnezeul lui Iacov.` Şi Moise, tremurînd, n'a îndrăznit să se uite.33 Domnul i -a zis: ,Scoate-ţi încălţămintea din picioare, căci locul pe care stai, este un pămînt sfînt.34 Am văzut suferinţa poporului Meu, care este în Egipt, le-am auzit gemetele, şi M'am pogorît să -i izbăvesc. Acum, du-te, te voi trimete în Egipt.`35 Pe acest Moise, de care se lepădaseră ei, cînd au zis: ,Cine te -a pus pe tine stăpînitor şi judecător?` Dumnezeu l -a trimes ca stăpînitor şi izbăvitor, cu ajutorul îngerului, care i se arătase în rug.36 El i -a scos din Egipt, şi a făcut minuni şi semne în Egipt, la Marea Roşie, şi în pustie, patruzeci de ani.37 Acest Moise a zis fiilor lui Israel: ,Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru, vă va ridica dintre fraţii voştri un prooroc ca mine: de el să ascultaţi.``38 El este acela care, în adunarea Israeliţilor din pustie, cu îngerul, care i -a vorbit pe muntele Sinai, şi cu părinţii noştri, a primit cuvinte vii, ca să ni le dea nouă.39 Părinţii noştri n'au vrut să -l asculte, ci l-au nesocotit: şi, în inimile lor, s'au întors spre Egipt,40 şi au zis lui Aaron: ,Fă-ne nişte dumnezei, cari să meargă înaintea noastră; căci acest Moise, care ne -a scos din ţara Egiptului, nu ştim ce s'a făcut.`41 Şi în zilele acelea, au făcut un viţel, au adus jertfă idolului, şi s'au bucurat de lucrul mînilor lor.42 Atunci Dumnezeu S'a întors dela ei, şi i -a dat să se închine oştirii cerului, după cum este scris în cartea proorocilor: ,Mi-aţi adus voi vite junghiate şi jertfe timp de patruzeci de ani în pustie, casă a lui Israel?..43 Aţi purtat cortul lui Moloh şi chipul stelei zeului Remfan, chipurile acelea, pe cari le-aţi făcut ca să vă închinaţi lor! De aceea vă voi strămuta dincolo de Babilon.`44 Părinţii noştri aveau în pustie cortul întîlnirii, aşa cum îl rînduise Celce a spus lui Moise să -l facă după chipul, pe care -l văzuse.45 Şi părinţii noştri l-au adus, la rîndul lor, supt povăţuirea lui Iosua, cînd au intrat în ţara stăpînită de Neamurile, pe cari Dumnezeu le -a izgonit dinaintea părinţilor noştri; şi a rămas acolo pînă în zilele lui David.46 David a căpătat milă înaintea lui Dumnezeu, şi a cerut să ridice o locuinţă pentru Dumnezeul lui Iacov.47 Şi Solomon a fost acela care I -a zidit o casă.48 Dar Cel Prea Înalt nu locuieşte în lăcaşuri făcute de mîni omeneşti, cum zice proorocul:49 ,Cerul este scaunul Meu de domnie, şi pămîntul este aşternutul picioarelor Mele. Ce fel de casă Îmi veţi zidi voi Mie, zice Domnul, sau care va fi locul Meu de odihnă?50 N'a făcut mîna Mea toate aceste lucruri?...``51 ...,,Oameni tari la cerbice, netăiaţi împrejur cu inima şi cu urechile! Voi totdeauna vă împotriviţi Duhului Sfînt. Cum au făcut părinţii voştri, aşa faceţi şi voi.52 Pe cari din prooroci nu i-au prigonit părinţii voştri? Au omorît pe ceice vesteau mai dinainte venirea Celui Neprihănit, pe care L-aţi vîndut acum, şi L-aţi omorît.53 voi, cari aţi primit Legea dată prin îngeri, şi n'aţi păzit -o!...``54 Cînd au auzit ei aceste vorbe, îi tăia pe inimă, şi scrîşneau din dinţi împotriva lui.55 Dar Ştefan, plin de Duhul Sfînt, şi -a pironit ochii spre cer, a văzut slava lui Dumnezeu, şi pe Isus stînd în picioare la dreapta lui Dumnezeu;56 şi a zis: ,,Iată, văd cerurile deschise, şi pe Fiul omului stînd în picioare la dreapta lui Dumnezeu.``57 Ei au început atunci să răcnească, şi-au astupat urechile, şi s'au năpustit toţi într'un gînd asupra lui.58 L-au tîrît afară din cetate, şi l-au ucis cu pietre. Marturii şi-au pus hainele la picioarele unui tînăr, numit Saul.59 Şi aruncau cu pietre în Ştefan, care se ruga şi zicea: ,,Doamne Isuse, primeşte duhul meu!``60 Apoi a îngenuncheat, şi a strigat cu glas tare: ,,Doamne, nu le ţinea în seamă păcatul acesta!`` Şi după aceste vorbe, a adormit.

1 And the chief priest said, `Are then these things so?`2 and he said, `Men, brethren, and fathers, hearken: The God of the glory did appear to our father Abraham, being in Mesopotamia, before his dwelling in Haran,3 and He said to him, Go forth out of thy land, and out of thy kindred, and come to a land that I shall shew thee.4 `Then having come forth out of the land of the Chaldeans, he dwelt in Haran, and from thence, after the death of his father, He did remove him to this land wherein ye now dwell,5 and He gave him no inheritance in it, not even a footstep, and did promise to give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him -- he having no child.6 `And God spake thus, That his seed shall be sojourning in a strange land, and they shall cause it to serve, and shall do it evil four hundred years,7 and the nation whom they shall serve I will judge, said God; and after these things they shall come forth and shall do Me service in this place.8 `And He gave to him a covenant of circumcision, and so he begat Isaac, and did circumcise him on the eighth day, and Isaac [begat] Jacob, and Jacob -- the twelve patriarchs;9 and the patriarchs, having been moved with jealousy, sold Joseph to Egypt, and God was with him,10 and did deliver him out of all his tribulations, and gave him favour and wisdom before Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he did set him -- governor over Egypt and all his house.11 `And there came a dearth upon all the land of Egypt and Canaan, and great tribulation, and our fathers were not finding sustenance,12 and Jacob having heard that there was corn in Egypt, sent forth our fathers a first time;13 and at the second time was Joseph made known to his brethren, and Joseph`s kindred became manifest to Pharaoh,14 and Joseph having sent, did call for his father Jacob, and all his kindred -- with seventy and five souls --15 and Jacob went down to Egypt, and died, himself and our fathers,16 and they were carried over into Sychem, and were laid in the tomb that Abraham bought for a price in money from the sons of Emmor, of Sychem.17 `And according as the time of the promise was drawing nigh, which God did swear to Abraham, the people increased and multiplied in Egypt,18 till another king rose, who had not known Joseph;19 this one, having dealt subtilely with our kindred, did evil to our fathers, causing to expose their babes, that they might not live;20 in which time Moses was born, and he was fair to God, and he was brought up three months in the house of his father;21 and he having been exposed, the daughter of Pharaoh took him up, and did rear him to herself for a son;22 and Moses was taught in all wisdom of the Egyptians, and he was powerful in words and in works.23 `And when forty years were fulfilled to him, it came upon his heart to look after his brethren, the sons of Israel;24 and having seen a certain one suffering injustice, he did defend, and did justice to the oppressed, having smitten the Egyptian;25 and he was supposing his brethren to understand that God through his hand doth give salvation; and they did not understand.26 `On the succeeding day, also, he shewed himself to them as they are striving, and urged them to peace, saying, Men, brethren are ye, wherefore do ye injustice to one another?27 and he who is doing injustice to the neighbour, did thrust him away, saying, Who set thee a ruler and a judge over us?28 to kill me dost thou wish, as thou didst kill yesterday the Egyptian?29 `And Moses fled at this word, and became a sojourner in the land of Midian, where he begat two sons,30 and forty years having been fulfilled, there appeared to him in the wilderness of mount Sinai a messenger of the Lord, in a flame of fire of a bush,31 and Moses having seen did wonder at the sight; and he drawing near to behold, there came a voice of the Lord unto him,32 I [am] the God of thy fathers; the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. `And Moses having become terrified, durst not behold,33 and the Lord said to him, Loose the sandal of thy feet, for the place in which thou hast stood is holy ground;34 seeing I have seen the affliction of My people that [is] in Egypt, and their groaning I did hear, and came down to deliver them; and now come, I will send thee to Egypt.35 `This Moses, whom they did refuse, saying, Who did set thee a ruler and a judge? this one God a ruler and a redeemer did send, in the hand of a messenger who appeared to him in the bush;36 this one did bring them forth, having done wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and in the Red Sea, and in the wilderness forty years;37 this is the Moses who did say to the sons of Israel: A prophet to you shall the Lord your God raise up out of your brethren, like to me, him shall ye hear.38 `This is he who was in the assembly in the wilderness, with the messenger who is speaking to him in the mount Sinai, and with our fathers who did receive the living oracles to give to us;39 to whom our fathers did not wish to become obedient, but did thrust away, and turned back in their hearts to Egypt,40 saying to Aaron, Make to us gods who shall go on before us, for this Moses, who brought us forth out of the land of Egypt, we have not known what hath happened to him.41 `And they made a calf in those days, and brought a sacrifice to the idol, and were rejoicing in the works of their hands,42 and God did turn, and did give them up to do service to the host of the heaven, according as it hath been written in the scroll of the prophets: Slain beasts and sacrifices did ye offer to Me forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?43 and ye took up the tabernacle of Moloch, and the star of your god Remphan -- the figures that ye made to bow before them, and I will remove your dwelling beyond Babylon.44 `The tabernacle of the testimony was among our fathers in the wilderness, according as He did direct, who is speaking to Moses, to make it according to the figure that he had seen;45 which also our fathers having in succession received, did bring in with Joshua, into the possession of the nations whom God did drive out from the presence of our fathers, till the days of David,46 who found favour before God, and requested to find a tabernacle for the God of Jacob;47 and Solomon built Him an house.48 `But the Most High in sanctuaries made with hands doth not dwell, according as the prophet saith:49 The heaven [is] My throne, and the earth My footstool; what house will ye build to Me? saith the Lord, or what [is] the place of My rest?50 hath not My hand made all these things?51 `Ye stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and in ears! ye do always the Holy Spirit resist; as your fathers -- also ye;52 which of the prophets did not your fathers persecute? and they killed those who declared before about the coming of the Righteous One, of whom now ye betrayers and murderers have become,53 who received the law by arrangement of messengers, and did not keep [it].`54 And hearing these things, they were cut to the hearts, and did gnash the teeth at him;55 and being full of the Holy Spirit, having looked stedfastly to the heaven, he saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God,56 and he said, `Lo, I see the heavens having been opened, and the Son of Man standing on the right hand of God.`57 And they, having cried out with a loud voice, stopped their ears, and did rush with one accord upon him,58 and having cast him forth outside of the city, they were stoning [him] -- and the witnesses did put down their garments at the feet of a young man called Saul --59 and they were stoning Stephen, calling and saying, `Lord Jesus, receive my spirit;`60 and having bowed the knees, he cried with a loud voice, `Lord, mayest thou not lay to them this sin;` and this having said, he fell asleep.
