Job 20

Zophar Speaks

1 Then Zophar the Naamathite  * 20:1 Jb 2:11; 11:1; 42:9 replied:

2 This is why my unsettling thoughts compel me to answer,

because I am upset!  * 20:2 Lit because of my feeling within me

3 I have heard a rebuke that insults me,

and my understanding  * 20:3 Lit and a spirit from my understanding makes me reply.  * 20:3 Jb 19:3; 32:18; Ac 2:20

4 Don’t you know that ever since antiquity,

from the time a human was placed on earth,

5 the joy of the wicked has been brief

and the happiness of the godless has lasted only a moment?  * 20:5 Jb 8:12–13; Ps 37:35–36; 92:7

6 Though his arrogance reaches heaven,

and his head touches the clouds,  * 20:6 Gn 11:4; Is 14:13–14; Ob 3–4

7 he will vanish forever like his own dung.

Those who know  * 20:7 Lit have seen him will ask, "Where is he? "  * 20:7 Jb 4:20; Ps 90:5–6; Jms 4:14

8 He will fly away like a dream and never be found;

he will be chased away like a vision in the night.  * 20:8 Ps 73:20; 90:5; Is 29:7

9 The eye that saw him will see him no more,  * 20:9 Jb 7:8,21; Ps 37:36

and his household will no longer see him.  * 20:9 Jb 7:10; 8:18; Ps 103:16

10 His children will beg from  * 20:10 Or children must compensate  the poor,

for his own hands must give back his wealth.

11 His frame may be full of youthful vigor,

but it will lie down with him in dust.  * 20:11 Jb 7:21; 17:16; Ps 7:5

12 Though evil tastes sweet in his mouth

and he conceals it under his tongue,

13 though he cherishes it and will not let it go

but keeps it in his mouth,  * 20:12–13 Ps 10:7; Pr 9:17; 20:17

14 yet the food in his stomach turns

into cobras’ venom inside him.

15 He swallows wealth but must vomit it up;

God will force it from his stomach.

16 He will suck the poison of cobras;

a viper’s fangs  * 20:16 Lit tongue will kill him.  * 20:16 Dt 32:33; Pr 23:32; Is 59:5

17 He will not enjoy the streams,

the rivers flowing with honey and curds.  * 20:17 Dt 32:13; Jb 29:6; Ps 36:8

18 He must return the fruit of his labor without consuming it;

he doesn’t enjoy the profits from his trading.

19 For he oppressed and abandoned the poor;

he seized a house he did not build.  * 20:19 Dt 28:30; Is 5:8; Mc 2:2

20 Because his appetite is never satisfied,  * 20:20 Lit Because he does not know ease in his stomach

he does not let anything he desires escape.

21 Nothing is left for him to consume;  * 20:20–21 Jb 15:29; Pr 17:1; Ec 5:13

therefore, his prosperity will not last.

22 At the height of his success  * 20:22 Lit In the fullness of his excess distress will come to him;  * 20:22 Jdg 2:15; Jb 21:17; Zph 1:17

the full weight of misery  * 20:22 Some Hb mss, LXX, Vg; other Hb mss read the hand of everyone in misery will crush him.

23 When he fills his stomach,

God will send his burning anger against him,

raining  * 20:23 Gn 19:24; Ps 11:6; Ezk 38:22 it down on him while he is eating.  * 20:23 Text emended; MT reads him, against his flesh

24 If he flees from an iron weapon,

an arrow from a bronze bow will pierce him.

25 He pulls it out of his back,

the flashing tip out of his liver.  * 20:25 Or gallbladder

Terrors come over him.  * 20:25 Jb 18:11; 27:20; Jr 6:25

26 Total darkness is reserved for his treasures.

A fire unfanned by human hands will consume  * 20:26 Jb 15:34; Ps 21:9; 50:3  him;

it will feed on what is left in his tent.

27 The heavens will expose his iniquity,  * 20:27 Jb 13:23,26; 15:5; 22:5

and the earth will rise up against him.  * 20:27 Dt 4:26; Jb 16:18–19; Ps 50:4

28 The possessions in his house will be removed,

flowing away on the day of God’s anger.

29 This is the wicked person’s lot  * 20:29 Jb 27:13; 31:2; Ps 17:14 from God,

the inheritance God ordained for him.
