Job 40

1 The Lord answered Job:

2 Will the one who contends with the Almighty correct him?

Let him who argues with God give an answer 40:2 Lit God respond to it

3 Then Job answered the Lord:

4 I am so insignificant. How can I answer you 40:4 Ezr 9:6; Jb 29:9; 42:6

I place my hand over my mouth.

5 I have spoken once, and will not reply;

twice, but now can add nothing 40:5 Jb 9:3,15; 33:14; Ps 62:11

6 Then the Lord answered Job from the whirlwind 40:6 Jb 38:1; Jr 30:23; Ezk 13:11,13

7 Get ready to answer me like man;

when I question  40:7 2Sm 11:7; Jb 38:3; 42:4 you, you will inform me.

8 Would you really challenge my justice?

Would you declare me guilty  40:8 Jb 9:20,28; Ps 37:33; Is 50:9 to justify yourself 40:8 Jb 32:2; Ps 51:4; Rm 3:4

9 Do you have an arm like God’s?

Can you thunder with voice like his?

10 Adorn yourself with majesty  40:10 Ps 93:1; 96:6; 104:1 and splendor,

and clothe yourself with honor and glory.

11 Pour out your raging anger 40:11 Jb 14:13; 19:11; 21:17

look on every proud person and humiliate him 40:11 Is 2:11; Ezk 21:26; Dn 4:37

12 Look on every proud person and humble him 40:12 Ps 18:27; Is 13:11; 63:3

trample the wicked where they stand 40:12 Lit wicked in their place

13 Hide them together in the dust;

imprison them in the grave 40:13 Lit together; bind their faces in the hidden place

14 Then I will confess to you

that your own right hand  40:14 Ps 17:7; 20:6; 108:6 can deliver you 40:14 Ps 3:8; 49:7; 62:2

15 Look at Behemoth,

which I made along with you.

He eats grass like cattle.

16 Look at the strength of his back  40:16 Or waist

and the power in the muscles of his belly.

17 He stiffens his tail like cedar tree;

the tendons of his thighs are woven firmly together.

18 His bones are bronze tubes;

his limbs are like iron rods.

19 He is the foremost of God’s works 40:19 Jb 26:14; Pr 8:22

only his Maker can draw the sword against him.

20 The hills yield food for him,

while all sorts of wild animals play there.

21 He lies under the lotus plants,

hiding in the protection  40:21 Lit plants, in the hiding place of marshy reeds.

22 Lotus plants cover him with their shade;

the willows by the brook surround him.

23 Though the river rages, Behemoth is unafraid;

he remains confident, even if the Jordan surges up to his mouth.

24 Can anyone capture him while he looks on 40:24 Lit capture it in its eyes

or pierce his nose with snares?
