1 我 又 轉 念 、 見 日 光 之 下 所 行 的 一 切 欺 壓 ． 看 哪 、 受 欺 壓 的 流 淚 、 且 無 人 安 慰 ． 欺 壓 他 們 的 有 勢 力 、 也 無 人 安 慰 他 們 。2 因 此 我 讚 歎 那 早 已 死 的 死 人 、 勝 過 那 還 活 著 的 活 人 ．3 並 且 我 以 為 那 未 曾 生 的 、 就 是 未 見 過 日 光 之 下 惡 事 的 、 比 這 兩 等 人 更 強 。4 我 又 見 人 為 一 切 的 勞 碌 、 和 各 樣 靈 巧 的 工 作 、 就 被 鄰 舍 嫉 妒 ． 這 也 是 虛 空 、 也 是 捕 風 。5 愚 昧 人 抱 著 手 、 喫 自 己 的 肉 。6 滿 了 一 把 、 得 享 安 靜 、 強 如 滿 了 兩 把 、 勞 碌 捕 風 。7 我 又 轉 念 、 見 日 光 之 下 有 一 件 虛 空 的 事 。8 有 人 孤 單 無 二 、 無 子 無 兄 、 竟 勞 碌 不 息 、 眼 目 也 不 以 錢 財 為 足 ． 他 說 我 勞 勞 碌 碌 、 刻 苦 自 己 、 不 享 福 樂 、 到 底 是 為 誰 呢 ． 這 也 是 虛 空 、 是 極 重 的 勞 苦 。9 兩 個 人 總 比 一 個 人 好 、 因 為 二 人 勞 碌 同 得 美 好 的 果 效 。10 若 是 跌 倒 、 這 人 可 以 扶 起 他 的 同 伴 ． 若 是 孤 身 跌 倒 、 沒 有 別 人 扶 起 他 來 、 這 人 就 有 禍 了 。11 再 者 、 二 人 同 睡 、 就 都 煖 和 ． 一 人 獨 睡 、 怎 能 煖 和 呢 。12 有 人 攻 勝 孤 身 一 人 、 若 有 二 人 便 能 敵 擋 他 ． 三 股 合 成 的 繩 子 、 不 容 易 折 斷 。13 貧 窮 而 有 智 慧 的 少 年 人 、 勝 過 年 老 不 肯 納 諫 的 愚 昧 王 。14 這 人 是 從 監 牢 中 出 來 作 王 ． 在 他 國 中 、 生 來 原 是 貧 窮 的 。15 我 見 日 光 之 下 一 切 行 動 的 活 人 、 都 隨 從 那 第 二 位 、 就 是 起 來 代 替 老 王 的 少 年 人 。16 他 所 治 理 的 眾 人 、 就 是 他 的 百 姓 、 多 得 無 數 ． 在 他 後 來 的 人 、 尚 且 不 喜 悅 他 ． 這 真 是 虛 空 、 也 是 捕 風 。

1 And I have turned, and I see all the oppressions that are done under the sun, and lo, the tear of the oppressed, and they have no comforter; and at the hand of their oppressors [is] power, and they have no comforter.2 And I am praising the dead who have already died above the living who are yet alive.3 And better than both of them [is] he who hath not yet been, in that he hath not seen the evil work that hath been done under the sun.4 And I have seen all the labour, and all the benefit of the work, because for it a man is the envy of his neighbour. Even this [is] vanity and vexation of spirit.5 The fool is clasping his hands, and eating his own flesh:6 `Better [is] a handful [with] quietness, than two handfuls [with] labour and vexation of spirit.`7 And I have turned, and I see a vain thing under the sun:8 There is one, and there is not a second; even son or brother he hath not, and there is no end to all his labour! His eye also is not satisfied with riches, and [he saith not], `For whom am I labouring and bereaving my soul of good?` This also is vanity, it is a sad travail.9 The two [are] better than the one, in that they have a good reward by their labour.10 For if they fall, the one raiseth up his companion, but wo to the one who falleth and there is not a second to raise him up!11 Also, if two lie down, then they have heat, but how hath one heat?12 And if the one strengthen himself, the two stand against him; and the threefold cord is not hastily broken.13 Better is a poor and wise youth than an old and foolish king, who hath not known to be warned any more.14 For from a house of prisoners he hath come out to reign, for even in his own kingdom he hath been poor.15 I have seen all the living, who are walking under the sun, with the second youth who doth stand in his place;16 there is no end to all the people, to all who were before them; also, the latter rejoice not in him. Surely this also is vanity and vexation of spirit.
