1 After these things, when the fury of king Ahasuerus was appeased, he remembered Vashti, and what she had done, and what was decreed against her.

2 Then said the king's servants that attended upon him, Let there be maidens, virgins of beautiful countenance, sought for the king;

3 and let the king appoint officers in all the provinces of his kingdom, that they may gather together all the young virgins of beautiful countenance to Shushan the fortress, to the house of the women, unto the custody of Hegai the king's chamberlain, keeper of the women; and let their things for purification be given.

4 And let the maiden that pleaseth the king be queen instead of Vashti. And the thing pleased the king; and he did so.

5 There was in Shushan the fortress a certain Jew, whose name was Mordecai, the son of Jair, the son of Shimei, the son of Kish, a Benjaminite,

6 who had been carried away from Jerusalem with the captives who had been carried away with Jeconiah king of Judah, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away.

7 And he brought up Hadassah, that is, Esther, his uncle's daughter; for she had neither father nor mother-and the maiden was fair and beautiful-and when her father and mother were dead, Mordecai took her for his own daughter.

8 And it came to pass when the king's commandment and his decree was heard, and when many maidens were gathered together unto Shushan the fortress, unto the custody of Hegai, that Esther also was brought into the king's house, unto the custody of Hegai, keeper of the women.

9 And the maiden pleased him, and obtained favour before him; and he speedily gave her her things for purification, and her portions, and the seven maidens selected to be given her, out of the king's house; and he removed her and her maids to the best {place} of the house of the women.

10 Esther had not made known her people nor her birth; for Mordecai had charged her that she should not make it known.

11 And Mordecai walked every day before the court of the women's house, to know how Esther did, and what should become of her.

12 And when every maiden's turn came to go in to king Ahasuerus after that she had been treated for twelve months, according to the manner of the women (for so were the days of their purification accomplished-six months with oil of myrrh, and six months with spices, and with things for the purifying of the women,

13 and thus came the maiden in unto the king), whatever she desired was given her to go with her out of the house of the women to the king's house.

14 In the evening she went, and on the morrow she returned into the second house of the women, unto the custody of Shaashgaz, the king's chamberlain, keeper of the concubines. She came in to the king no more, unless the king delighted in her, and she were called by name.

15 And when the turn of Esther, the daughter of Abihail the uncle of Mordecai, who had taken her for his daughter, came to go in to the king, she required nothing but what Hegai the king's chamberlain, keeper of the women, appointed. And Esther obtained grace in the sight of all them that saw her.

16 So Esther was taken to king Ahasuerus, into his royal house, in the tenth month, that is, the month Tebeth, in the seventh year of his reign.

17 And the king loved Esther above all the women, and she obtained grace and favour in his sight more than all the virgins, and he set the royal crown upon her head, and made her queen instead of Vashti.

18 And the king made a great feast to all his princes and his servants, Esther's feast; and he made a release to the provinces, and gave presents according to the king's bounty.

19 And when the virgins were gathered together the second time, Mordecai sat in the king's gate.

20 (Esther, as Mordecai had charged her, had not yet made known her birth nor her people; for Esther did what Mordecai told her, like as when she was brought up with him.)

21 In those days, while Mordecai sat in the king's gate, two of the king's chamberlains, Bigthan and Teresh, of those which kept the threshold, were wroth, and sought to lay hand on the king Ahasuerus.

22 And the thing became known to Mordecai, and he related it to Esther the queen, and Esther told it to the king in Mordecai's name.

23 And the matter was investigated and found out; and they were both hanged on a tree. And it was written in the book of the chronicles before the king.

1 Après ces choses, quand la colère du Roi Assuérus fut apaisée, il se souvint de Vasti, et de ce qu'elle avait fait, et de ce qui avait été décrété contr'elle.

2 Et les jeunes gens qui servaient le Roi, dirent : Qu'on cherche au Roi des jeunes filles vierges, et belles à voir;

3 Et que le Roi établisse des commissaires dans toutes les provinces de son Royaume, qui assemblent toutes les jeunes filles, vierges et belles à voir, dans Susan, la ville capitale, en l'hôtel des femmes sous la charge d'Hégaï, Eunuque du Roi, le gardien des femmes, qu'on leur donne leurs préparatifs.

4 Et la jeune fille qui plaira au Roi, régnera en la place de Vasti. Et la chose plut au Roi, et il le fit ainsi.

5 [Or] il y avait à Susan, la ville capitale, un homme Juif, qui avait nom Mardochée, fils de Jaïr, fils de Simhi, fils de Kis, Benjamite;

6 Lequel avait été transporté de Jérusalem, avec les prisonniers qui avaient été emmenés captifs avec Jéchonias, Roi de Juda, lesquels Nébuchadnetsar, Roi de Babylone, avait transportés.

7 Et il nourrissait Hadassa, qui est Esther, fille de son oncle; car elle n'avait ni père ni mère; et la jeune fille était de belle taille, et très-belle à voir; et après la mort de son père et de sa mère Mardochée l'avait prise pour sa fille.

8 Et quand la parole du Roi et son édit fut su, et que plusieurs jeunes filles eurent été assemblées à Susan la ville capitale, sous la charge d'Hégaï, Esther aussi fut amenée dans la maison du Roi, sous la charge d'Hégaï, gardien des femmes.

9 Lequel voyant la jeune fille, elle lui plut, et gagna ses bonnes grâces, de sorte qu'il lui fit aussitôt expédier ses préparatifs, et il lui ordonna son état et sept jeunes filles, telles qu'il les lui fallait ordonner de la maison du Roi, et lui fit changer [d'appartement, et la logea], elle et toutes les jeunes filles, dans un des plus beaux appartements de l'hôtel des femmes.

10 [Or] Esther ne déclara point son peuple, ni son parentage, car Mardochée lui avait enjoint de n'en rien déclarer.

11 Et Mardochée se promenait tous les jours devant le parvis de l'hôtel des femmes, pour savoir comment se portait Esther, et ce qu'on ferait d'elle.

12 Or quand le tour de chaque jeune fille était venu pour entrer vers le Roi Assuérus, ayant achevé tout ce qui lui échéait à faire selon ce qui était ordonné touchant les femmes, douze mois durant; (car c'est ainsi que s'accomplissaient les jours de leurs préparatifs, [savoir] durant six mois, avec de l'huile et de la myrrhe, et durant [autres] six mois avec des choses aromatiques, et [autres] préparatifs de femmes;

13 Alors dans cet état la jeune fille entrait vers le Roi;) tout ce qu'elle demandait lui était donné pour aller avec elle depuis l'hôtel des femmes jusqu'à l'hôtel du Roi.

14 Elle y entrait sur le soir, et sur le matin elle retournait dans le second hôtel des femmes sous la charge de Sahasgaz Eunuque du Roi, gardien des concubines; [et] elle n'entrait plus vers le Roi, si ce n'est que le Roi la voulût, et qu'elle fût appelée nommément.

15 Quand donc le tour d'Esther fille d'Abihaïl, oncle de Mardochée, laquelle [Mardochée] avait prise pour sa fille, fut venu pour entrer chez le Roi; elle ne demanda rien sinon ce que dirait Hégaï Eunuque du Roi, gardien des femmes; et Esther gagnait la bonne grâce de tous ceux qui la voyaient.

16 Ainsi Esther fut amenée au Roi Assuérus, dans son hôtel Royal, le dixième mois, qui est le mois de Tébeth en la septième année de son règne.

17 Et le Roi aima plus Esther que toutes les [autres] femmes, et elle gagna ses bonnes grâces et sa bienveillance plus que toutes les vierges; et il mit la couronne du Royaume sur sa tête, et l'établit pour Reine en la place de Vasti.

18 Alors le Roi fit un grand festin à tous les principaux Seigneurs de ses pays, et à ses serviteurs, [savoir] le festin d'Esther; et il soulagea les provinces, et fit des présents selon l'opulence royale.

19 Or pendant qu'on assemblait les vierges pour la seconde fois, et que Mardochée était assis à la porte du Roi;

20 Esther ne déclara point son parentage, ni son peuple, selon que Mardochée le lui avait enjoint; car elle exécutait ce que lui disait Mardochée, comme quand elle était nourrie chez lui.

21 En ces jours-là, Mardochée étant assis à la porte du Roi, Bigthan et Térès, deux des Eunuques du Roi d'entre ceux qui gardaient l'entrée, se mutinèrent, et ils cherchaient de mettre la main sur le Roi Assuérus.

22 Ce que Mardochée ayant appris, il le fit savoir à la Reine Esther; puis Esther le redit au Roi de la part de Mardochée.

23 Et on s'enquit de la chose, et on trouva [que cela était vrai]. Et les Eunuques furent tous deux pendus à un gibet, et cela fut écrit dans le Livre des Chroniques en la présence du Roi.
