1 God having spoken in many parts and in many ways formerly to the fathers in the prophets,2 at the end of these days has spoken to us in {the person of the} Son, whom he has established heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;3 who being {the} effulgence of his glory and {the} expression of his substance, and upholding all things by the word of his power, having made {by himself} the purification of sins, set himself down on the right hand of the greatness on high,4 taking a place by so much better than the angels, as he inherits a name more excellent than they.5 For to which of the angels said he ever, *Thou* art my Son: this day have *I* begotten thee? and again, *I* will be to him for father, and *he* shall be to me for son?6 and again, when he brings in the firstborn into the habitable world, he says, And let all God's angels worship him.7 And as to the angels he says, Who makes his angels spirits and his ministers a flame of fire;8 but as to the Son, Thy throne, O God, {is} to the age of the age, and a sceptre of uprightness {is} the sceptre of thy kingdom.9 Thou hast loved righteousness and hast hated lawlessness; therefore God, thy God, has anointed thee with oil of gladness above thy companions.10 And, *Thou* in the beginning, Lord, hast founded the earth, and works of thy hands are the heavens.11 They shall perish, but *thou* continuest still; and they all shall grow old as a garment,12 and as a covering shalt thou roll them up, and they shall be changed; but *thou* art the Same, and thy years shall not fail.13 But as to which of the angels said he ever, Sit at my right hand until I put thine enemies {as} footstool of thy feet?14 Are they not all ministering spirits, sent out for service on account of those who shall inherit salvation?

1 Muitas vezes e de diversos modos outrora falou Deus aos nossos pais pelos profetas.2 Ultimamente nos falou por seu Filho, que constituiu herdeiro universal, pelo qual criou todas as coisas.3 Esplendor da glória {de Deus} e imagem do seu ser, sustenta o universo com o poder da sua palavra. Depois de ter realizado a purificação dos pecados, está sentado à direita da Majestade no mais alto dos céus,4 tão superior aos anjos quanto excede o deles o nome que herdou.5 Pois a quem dentre os anjos disse Deus alguma vez: Tu és meu Filho; eu hoje te gerei {Sl 2,7}? Ou então: Eu serei seu Pai e ele será meu Filho {II Sm 7,14}?6 E novamente, ao introduzir o seu Primogênito na terra, diz: Todos os anjos de Deus o adorem {Sl 96,7}.7 Por outro lado, a respeito dos anjos, diz: Ele faz dos seus anjos sopros de vento e dos seus ministros chamas de fogo {Sl 103,4},8 ao passo que do Filho diz: O teu trono, ó Deus, subsiste para a eternidade. O cetro do teu Reino é cetro de justiça.9 Amaste a justiça e odiaste a iniqüidade. Por isso, ó Deus, o teu Deus te ungiu com óleo de alegria, mais que aos teus companheiros {Sl 44,7s};10 e ainda: Tu, Senhor, no princípio dos tempos fundaste a terra, e os céus são obra de tuas mãos.11 Eles passarão, mas tu permaneces. Todos envelhecerão como uma veste;12 tu os envolvas como uma capa, e serão mudados. Tu, ao contrário, és sempre o mesmo e os teus anos não acabarão {Sl 103,26s}.13 Pois a qual dos anjos disse alguma vez: Assenta-te à minha direita até que eu ponha os teus inimigos por escabelo dos teus pés {Sl 109,1}?14 Não são todos os anjos espíritos ao serviço de Deus, que lhes confia missões para o bem daqueles que devem herdar a salvação?
