1 Da nu Sanballat hørte at vi bygget på muren, optendtes hans vrede; han blev yderlig forbitret og spottet jødene

2 og sa i nærvær av sine brødre og krigsfolket i Samaria: Hvad er det disse visne jøder gjør? Skal de ha lov til slikt? Skal de få ofre? Skal tro de vil få fullført verket idag? Skal tro de vil blåse liv i stenene fra grushaugene enda de alt er forbrent?

3 Og ammonitten Tobias, som stod ved siden av ham, sa: La dem bygge så meget de vil - bare en rev hopper op på deres stenmur, så river den den ned.

4 Hør, vår Gud, hvorledes vi er blitt foraktet! La deres spott falle tilbake på deres eget hode, og la dem bli til rov i fangenskaps land!

5 Dekk ikke over deres misgjerning, og la ikke deres synd bli utslettet for ditt åsyn! For de har krenket dig for bygningsmennenes ører.

6 Så bygget vi da på muren, og hele muren blev satt i stand til sin halve høide, og folket hadde godt mot på arbeidet.

1 But it came to pass that, when Sanballat heard that we were building the wall, he was wroth, and took great indignation, and mocked the Jews. 2 And he spake before his brethren and the army of Samaria, and said, What are these feeble Jews doing? will they fortify themselves? will they sacrifice? will they make an end in a day? will they revive the stones out of the heaps of rubbish, seeing they are burned? 3 Now Tobiah the Ammonite was by him, and he said, Even that which they are building, if a fox go up, he shall break down their stone wall. 4 Hear, O our God; for we are despised: and turn back their reproach upon their own head, and give them up for a spoil in a land of captivity; 5 and cover not their iniquity, and let not their sin be blotted out from before thee; for they have provoked thee to anger before the builders. 6 So we built the wall; and all the wall was joined together unto half the height thereof: for the people had a mind to work.
