20 Mordekai skrev op disse hendelser og sendte brev til alle jødene i alle kong Ahasverus' landskaper, nær og fjern,

21 og fastsatte det som en lov for dem at de år efter år skulde høitideligholde den fjortende dag og den femtende dag i måneden adar,

22 fordi det var på de dager jødene hadde fatt ro for sine fiender, og fordi det var i den måned deres bedrøvelse hadde vendt sig til glede og deres sorg til høitid; derfor skulde de gjøre disse dager til gjestebuds- og gledesdager og sende mat til hverandre og gaver til de fattige.

23 Jødene vedtok som fast skikk hvad de hadde begynt å gjøre, og hvad Mordekai hadde skrevet til dem om;

24 for agagitten Haman, Hammedatas sønn, alle jøders fiende, hadde lagt råd op mot jødene for å utrydde dem og kastet pur, det er lodd, for å ødelegge og utrydde dem,

25 men da det kom kongen for øre, hadde han ved et brev påbudt at det onde råd han hadde lagt op mot jødene, skulde vende tilbake på hans eget hode, så han selv og hans sønner blev hengt i galgen.

26 Derfor kalte de disse dager purim efter ordet pur. Og på grunn av alt det som stod i dette brev, og det som de selv hadde sett, og som hadde hendt dem,

27 fastsatte jødene og vedtok som ubrytelig skikk for sig og sine efterkommere og for alle som gikk over til deres tro, at de år efter år skulde høitideligholde disse to dager efter forskriften om dem og på den for dem fastsatte tid,

28 og at disse dager skulde ihukommes og høitideligholdes gjennem alle tider, i hver ætt, i hvert landskap og i hver by, og at disse purim-dager ikke skulde falle bort blandt jødene, og minnet om dem aldri ophøre blandt deres efterkommere.

29 Dronning Ester, Abiha'ils datter, og jøden Mordekai skrev atter et brev med myndige ord for å slå fast som lov det som stod i dette nye brev om purim.

30 Og han sendte skrivelser til alle jødene i de hundre og syv og tyve landskaper i Ahasverus' rike med vennlige og alvorlige ord,

31 for å slå fast som lov at de skulde holde disse purim-dager på de for dem fastsatte tider, således som jøden Mordekai og dronning Ester hadde foreskrevet om dem, og således som de hadde vedtatt det for sig selv og sine efterkommere om fastene og klageropene på dem.

32 Således blev disse forskrifter om purim-festen fastsatt som lov ved Esters bud, og det blev opskrevet i en bok.

20 Mordecai wrote these things, and sent letters to all the Jews who were in all the provinces of the king Ahasuerus, both near and far, 21 to enjoin them that they should keep the fourteenth and fifteenth days of the month Adar yearly, 22 as the days in which the Jews had rest from their enemies, and the month which was turned to them from sorrow to gladness, and from mourning into a holiday; that they should make them days of feasting and gladness, and of sending presents of food to one another, and gifts to the needy. 23 The Jews accepted the custom that they had begun, as Mordecai had written to them, 24 because Haman the son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, the enemy of all the Jews, had plotted against the Jews to destroy them, and had cast "Pur", that is the lot, to consume them and to destroy them; 25 but when this became known to the king, he commanded by letters that his wicked plan, which he had planned against the Jews, should return on his own head, and that he and his sons should be hanged on the gallows.

26 Therefore they called these days "Purim", from the word "Pur." Therefore because of all the words of this letter, and of that which they had seen concerning this matter, and that which had come to them, 27 the Jews established and imposed on themselves, on their descendants, and on all those who joined themselves to them, so that it should not fail that they would keep these two days according to what was written and according to its appointed time every year; 28 and that these days should be remembered and kept throughout every generation, every family, every province, and every city; and that these days of Purim should not fail from among the Jews, nor their memory perish from their offspring.

29 Then Esther the queen, the daughter of Abihail, and Mordecai the Jew wrote with all authority to confirm this second letter of Purim. 30 He sent letters to all the Jews in the hundred twenty-seven provinces of the kingdom of Ahasuerus with words of peace and truth, 31 to confirm these days of Purim in their appointed times, as Mordecai the Jew and Esther the queen had decreed, and as they had imposed upon themselves and their descendants in the matter of the fastings and their mourning. 32 The commandment of Esther confirmed these matters of Purim; and it was written in the book.
