1 And Agrippa said unto Paul, Thou art permitted to speak for thyself. Then Paul stretched forth his hand, and made his defence: 2 I think myself happy, king Agrippa, that I am to make my defence before thee this day touching all the things whereof I am accused by the Jews: 3 especially because thou art expert in all customs and questions which are among the Jews: wherefore I beseech thee to hear me patiently. 4 My manner of life then from my youth up, which was from the beginning among mine own nation, and at Jerusalem, know all the Jews; 5 having knowledge of me from the first, if they be willing to testify, how that after the straitest sect of our religion I lived a Pharisee. 6 And now I stand here to be judged for the hope of the promise made of God unto our fathers; 7 unto which promise our twelve tribes, earnestly serving God night and day, hope to attain. And concerning this hope I am accused by the Jews, O king! 8 Why is it judged incredible with you, if God doth raise the dead? 9 I verily thought with myself, that I ought to do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth. 10 And this I also did in Jerusalem: and I both shut up many of the saints in prisons, having received authority from the chief priests, and when they were put to death, I gave my vote against them. 11 And punishing them oftentimes in all the synagogues, I strove to make them blaspheme; and being exceedingly mad against them, I persecuted them even unto foreign cities. 12 Whereupon as I journeyed to Damascus with the authority and commission of the chief priests, 13 at midday, O king, I saw on the way a light from heaven, above the brightness of the sun, shining round about me and them that journeyed with me. 14 And when we were all fallen to the earth, I heard a voice saying unto me in the Hebrew language, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? it is hard for thee to kick against the goad. 15 And I said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest. 16 But arise, and stand upon thy feet: for to this end have I appeared unto thee, to appoint thee a minister and a witness both of the things wherein thou hast seen me, and of the things wherein I will appear unto thee; 17 delivering thee from the people, and from the Gentiles, unto whom I send thee, 18 to open their eyes, that they may turn from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive remission of sins and an inheritance among them that are sanctified by faith in me. 19 Wherefore, O king Agrippa, I was not disobedient unto the heavenly vision: 20 but declared both to them of Damascus first, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the country of Judaea, and also to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, doing works worthy of repentance. 21 For this cause the Jews seized me in the temple, and assayed to kill me. 22 Having therefore obtained the help that is from God, I stand unto this day testifying both to small and great, saying nothing but what the prophets and Moses did say should come; 23 how that the Christ must suffer, and how that he first by the resurrection of the dead should proclaim light both to the people and to the Gentiles. 24 And as he thus made his defence, Festus saith with a loud voice, Paul, thou art mad; thy much learning doth turn thee to madness. 25 But Paul saith, I am not mad, most excellent Festus; but speak forth words of truth and soberness. 26 For the king knoweth of these things, unto whom also I speak freely: for I am persuaded that none of these things is hidden from him; for this hath not been done in a corner. 27 King Agrippa, believest thou the prophets? I know that thou believest. 28 And Agrippa said unto Paul, With but little persuasion thou wouldest fain make me a Christian. 29 And Paul said, I would to God, that whether with little or with much, not thou only, but also all that hear me this day, might become such as I am, except these bonds. 30 And the king rose up, and the governor, and Bernice, and they that sat with them: 31 and when they had withdrawn, they spake one to another, saying, This man doeth nothing worthy of death or of bonds. 32 And Agrippa said unto Festus, This man might have been set at liberty, if he had not appealed unto Caesar.

1 A seguir, Agripa, dirigindo-se a Paulo, disse:

— Você está autorizado a falar em sua defesa.

Então Paulo, estendendo a mão, passou a defender-se nestes termos:

2 — Tenho-me por feliz, ó rei Agripa, pelo privilégio de, hoje, na presença do senhor, poder produzir a minha defesa de todas as acusações que os judeus fazem contra mim, 3 especialmente porque o senhor é versado em todos os costumes e questões que há entre os judeus. Por isso, peço que o senhor me ouça com paciência.

4 — Quanto à minha vida, desde a mocidade, como decorreu desde o princípio entre o meu povo e em Jerusalém, todos os judeus a conhecem; 5 pois, na verdade, eu era conhecido deles desde o princípio, se assim o quiserem testemunhar, porque, na condição de fariseu, vivi conforme o partido mais rigoroso da nossa religião. 6 E agora estou sendo julgado por causa da esperança da promessa feita por Deus aos nossos pais, 7 a qual as nossas doze tribos, servindo a Deus fervorosamente, noite e dia, almejam alcançar. É por causa dessa esperança, ó rei, que eu sou acusado pelos judeus. 8 Por que se julga incrível entre vocês que Deus ressuscite os mortos?

9 — Na verdade, eu pensava que devia fazer muitas coisas contra o nome de Jesus, o Nazareno; 10 e foi exatamente o que fiz em Jerusalém. Havendo eu recebido autorização dos principais sacerdotes, encerrei muitos dos santos na prisão; e, quando os condenavam à morte, eu dava o meu voto contra eles. 11 Muitas vezes, os castiguei por todas as sinagogas, obrigando-os até a blasfemar. E, demasiadamente enfurecido contra eles, eu os perseguia até em cidades estrangeiras.

12 — Com isto em mente, parti para Damasco, levando autorização dos principais sacerdotes e por eles comissionado. 13 Ao meio-dia, ó rei, enquanto eu seguia pelo caminho, vi uma luz no céu, mais resplandecente que o sol, que brilhou ao redor de mim e dos que iam comigo. 14 E, caindo todos nós por terra, ouvi uma voz que me falava em língua hebraica: "Saulo, Saulo, por que você me persegue? É duro para você ficar dando coices contra os aguilhões!" 15 Então eu perguntei: "Senhor, quem é você?" Ao que o Senhor respondeu: "Eu sou Jesus, a quem você persegue. 16 Mas levante-se e fique em pé. Eu apareci a você para constituí-lo ministro e testemunha, tanto das coisas em que você me viu como daquelas pelas quais ainda lhe aparecerei. 17 Vou livrar você do seu próprio povo e dos gentios, para os quais eu o envio, 18 para abrir os olhos deles e convertê-los das trevas para a luz e do poder de Satanás para Deus, a fim de que eles recebam remissão de pecados e herança entre os que são santificados pela fé em mim."

19 — Assim, ó rei Agripa, não fui desobediente à visão celestial, 20 mas anunciei primeiramente aos de Damasco e em Jerusalém, por toda a região da Judeia, e também aos gentios, que se arrependessem e se convertessem a Deus, praticando obras dignas de arrependimento. 21 Por causa disto, alguns judeus me prenderam, quando eu estava no templo, e tentaram me matar. 22 Mas, com a ajuda de Deus, permaneço até o dia de hoje, dando testemunho, tanto a pequenos como a grandes, nada dizendo, a não ser o que os profetas e Moisés disseram que ia acontecer, 23 isto é, que o Cristo devia padecer e, sendo o primeiro da ressurreição dos mortos, anunciaria a luz ao seu próprio povo e aos gentios.

24 Quando Paulo estava dizendo estas coisas em sua defesa, Festo o interrompeu, gritando:

— Você está louco, Paulo! Ficou louco de tanto estudar!

25 Paulo, porém, respondeu:

— Não estou louco, ó excelentíssimo Festo! Pelo contrário, digo palavras de verdade e de bom senso. 26 Porque tudo isto é do conhecimento do rei, a quem me dirijo com franqueza, pois estou persuadido de que nenhuma destas coisas lhe é oculta, pois nada se passou em algum lugar escondido.

27 — Por isso, pergunto: Rei Agripa, o senhor acredita nos profetas? Eu sei que o senhor acredita.

28 Então Agripa se dirigiu a Paulo e disse:

— Por pouco você me convence a me tornar cristão.

29 Paulo respondeu:

— Peço a Deus que faça com que, por pouco ou por muito, não apenas o senhor, ó rei, mas todos os que hoje me ouvem venham a ser alguém como eu, mas sem estas correntes.

30 A essa altura, levantou-se o rei, e também o governador, e Berenice, bem como os que estavam assentados com eles. 31 E, ao saírem, falavam uns com os outros, dizendo:

— Este homem não fez nada passível de morte ou de prisão.

32 Então Agripa se dirigiu a Festo e disse:

— Este homem bem podia ser solto, se não tivesse apelado para César.
