1 After these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward. 2 And Abram said, O Lord GOD, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and he that shall be possessor of my house is Dammesek Eliezer? 3 And Abram said, Behold, to me thou hast given no seed: and, lo, one born in my house is mine heir. 4 And, behold, the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, This man shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir. 5 And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to tell them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be. 6 And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness. 7 And he said unto him, I am the LORD that brought thee out of Ur of the Chaldees, to give thee this land to inherit it. 8 And he said, O Lord GOD, whereby shall I know that I shall inherit it? 9 And he said unto him, Take me an heifer of three years old, and a she-goat of three years old, and a ram of three years old, and a turtledove, and a young pigeon. 10 And he took him all these, and divided them in the midst, and laid each half over against the other: but the birds divided he not. 11 And the birds of prey came down upon the carcases, and Abram drove them away. 12 And when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and, lo, an horror of great darkness fell upon him. 13 And he said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years; 14 and also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance. 15 But thou shalt go to thy fathers in peace; thou shalt be buried in a good old age. 16 And in the fourth generation they shall come hither again: for the iniquity of the Amorite is not yet full. 17 And it came to pass, that, when the sun went down, and it was dark, behold a smoking furnace, and a flaming torch that passed between these pieces. 18 In that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates: 19 the Kenite, and the Kenizzite, and the Kadmonite, 20 and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Rephaim, 21 and the Amorite, and the Canaanite, and the Girgashite, and the Jebusite.

1 Depois destes acontecimentos, a palavra do Senhor veio a Abrão, numa visão, dizendo:

— Não tenha medo, Abrão, eu sou o seu escudo, e lhe darei uma grande recompensa.

2 Abrão respondeu:

— Senhor Deus, que me darás, se continuo sem filhos e o herdeiro da minha casa é o damasceno Eliézer?

3 Abrão continuou:

— Tu não me deste descendência, e um servo nascido na minha casa será o meu herdeiro.

4 E eis que a palavra do Senhor veio a ele, dizendo:

— Esse não será o seu herdeiro. Pelo contrário, aquele que será gerado por você, esse será o seu herdeiro.

5 Então o Senhor levou-o para fora e disse:

— Olhe para os céus e conte as estrelas, se puder contá-las.

E lhe disse:

— Assim será a sua posteridade.

6 Abrão creu no Senhor, e isso lhe foi atribuído para justiça.

7 O Senhor disse também:

— Eu sou o Senhor que o tirei de Ur dos caldeus, para lhe dar esta terra como herança.

8 Mas Abrão perguntou:

— Senhor Deus, como saberei que vou herdar essa terra?

9 O Senhor respondeu:

— Traga-me uma novilha, uma cabra e um cordeiro, cada qual de três anos, uma rolinha e um pombinho.

10 Abrão trouxe todos esses animais, cortou-os pelo meio e pôs as metades umas diante das outras. As aves, porém, não cortou pelo meio. 11 Aves de rapina desciam sobre os cadáveres, porém Abrão as enxotava.

12 Ao pôr do sol, um profundo sono caiu sobre Abrão, e grande pavor e densas trevas tomaram conta dele. 13 Então o Senhor lhe disse:

— Fique sabendo, com certeza, que a sua posteridade será peregrina em terra alheia, será reduzida à escravidão e será afligida durante quatrocentos anos. 14 Mas eu castigarei a nação que os escravizar. Depois eles sairão com muitas riquezas. 15 E você irá para junto de seus pais em paz; será sepultado em boa velhice. 16 Na quarta geração, voltarão para cá; porque a medida da iniquidade dos amorreus ainda não se encheu.

17 Quando o sol se pôs e houve densas trevas, eis que um fogareiro fumegante e uma tocha de fogo passaram entre aqueles pedaços dos animais. 18 Naquele mesmo dia, o Senhor fez aliança com Abrão, dizendo:

— À sua descendência dei esta terra, desde o rio do Egito até o grande rio Eufrates: 19 a terra dos queneus, dos quenezeus, dos cadmoneus, 20 dos heteus, dos ferezeus, dos refains, 21 dos amorreus, dos cananeus, dos girgaseus e dos jebuseus.
