1 Wherefore let us cease to speak of the first principles of Christ, and press on unto perfection; not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, 2 of the teaching of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. 3 And this will we do, if God permit. 4 For as touching those who were once enlightened and tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, 5 and tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the age to come, 6 and then fell away, it is impossible to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame. 7 For the land which hath drunk the rain that cometh oft upon it, and bringeth forth herbs meet for them for whose sake it is also tilled, receiveth blessing from God: 8 but if it beareth thorns and thistles, it is rejected and nigh unto a curse; whose end is to be burned. 9 But, beloved, we are persuaded better things of you, and things that accompany salvation, though we thus speak: 10 for God is not unrighteous to forget your work and the love which ye shewed toward his name, in that ye ministered unto the saints, and still do minister. 11 And we desire that each one of you may shew the same diligence unto the fulness of hope even to the end: 12 that ye be not sluggish, but imitators of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises. 13 For when God made promise to Abraham, since he could swear by none greater, he sware by himself, 14 saying, Surely blessing I will bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee. 15 And thus, having patiently endured, he obtained the promise. 16 For men swear by the greater: and in every dispute of theirs the oath is final for confirmation. 17 Wherein God, being minded to shew more abundantly unto the heirs of the promise the immutability of his counsel, interposed with an oath: 18 that by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we may have a strong encouragement, who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us; 19 which we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and stedfast and entering into that which is within the veil; 20 whither as a forerunner Jesus entered for us, having become a high priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.

1 Por isso, deixando os princípios elementares da doutrina de Cristo, avancemos para o que é perfeito, não lançando de novo a base do arrependimento de obras mortas e da fé em Deus, 2 o ensino de batismos e da imposição de mãos, da ressurreição dos mortos e do juízo eterno. 3 Isso faremos, se Deus o permitir.

4 É impossível, pois, que aqueles que uma vez foram iluminados, provaram o dom celestial, se tornaram participantes do Espírito Santo, 5 provaram a boa palavra de Deus e os poderes do mundo vindouro 6 e caíram, sim, é impossível outra vez renová-los para arrependimento, visto que, de novo, estão crucificando para si mesmos o Filho de Deus e expondo-o à zombaria. 7 Porque a terra que absorve a chuva que frequentemente cai sobre ela e produz plantas úteis para aqueles que a cultivam recebe bênção da parte de Deus; 8 mas, se produz espinhos e ervas daninhas, é rejeitada e está perto da maldição; e o seu fim é ser queimada.

9 Quanto a vocês, meus amados, ainda que falemos desta maneira, estamos certos de que coisas melhores os esperam, coisas relacionadas com a salvação. 10 Porque Deus não é injusto para se esquecer do trabalho que vocês fizeram e do amor que mostraram para com o seu nome, pois vocês serviram e ainda estão servindo aos santos. 11 Desejamos que cada um de vocês continue mostrando, até o fim, o mesmo empenho para a plena certeza da esperança, 12 para que não se tornem preguiçosos, mas imitadores daqueles que, pela fé e pela paciência, herdam as promessas.

13 Pois, quando Deus fez a promessa a Abraão, visto que não tinha ninguém superior por quem jurar, jurou por si mesmo, 14 dizendo: "Certamente eu o abençoarei e multiplicarei os seus descendentes." 15 E assim, depois de esperar com paciência, Abraão obteve a promessa. 16 Porque as pessoas juram pelo que lhes é superior, e o juramento, servindo de garantia, põe fim a toda discussão. 17 Por isso, Deus, quando quis mostrar com mais clareza aos herdeiros da promessa que o seu propósito era imutável, confirmou-o com um juramento. 18 Ele fez isso para que, mediante duas coisas imutáveis, nas quais é impossível que Deus minta, nós, que já corremos para o refúgio, tenhamos forte alento, para tomar posse da esperança que nos foi proposta. 19 Temos esta esperança por âncora da alma, segura e firme e que entra no santuário que fica atrás do véu, 20 onde Jesus, como precursor, entrou por nós, tendo-se tornado sumo sacerdote para sempre, segundo a ordem de Melquisedeque.
