1 Then Job answered and said, 2 Of a truth I know that it is so: but how can man be just with God? 3 If he be pleased to contend with him, he cannot answer him one of a thousand. 4 He is wise in heart, and mighty in strength: who hath hardened himself against him, and prospered? 5 Which removeth the mountains, and they know it not, when he overturneth them in his anger. 6 Which shaketh the earth out of her place, and the pillars thereof tremble. 7 Which commandeth the sun, and it riseth not; and sealeth up the stars. 8 Which alone stretcheth out the heavens, and treadeth upon the waves of the sea. 9 Which maketh the Bear, Orion, and the Pleiades, and the chambers of the south. 10 Which doeth great things past finding out; yea, marvelous things without number. 11 Lo, he goeth by me, and I see him not: he passeth on also, but I perceive him not. 12 Behold, he seizeth the prey, who can hinder him? who will say unto him, What doest thou? 13 God will not withdraw his anger; the helpers of Rahab do stoop under him. 14 How much less shall I answer him, and choose out my words to reason with him? 15 Whom, though I were righteous, yet would I not answer; I would make supplication to mine adversary. 16 If I had called, and he had answered me; yet would I not believe that he hearkened unto my voice. 17 For he breaketh me with a tempest, and multiplieth my wounds without cause. 18 He will not suffer me to take my breath, but filleth me with bitterness. 19 If we speak of the strength of the mighty, lo, he is there! and if of judgment, who will appoint me a time? 20 Though I be righteous, mine own mouth shall condemn me: though I be perfect, it shall prove me perverse. 21 I am perfect; I regard not myself; I despise my life. 22 It is all one; therefore I say, He destroyeth the perfect and the wicked. 23 If the scourge slay suddenly, he will mock at the trial of the innocent. 24 The earth is given into the hand of the wicked: he covereth the faces of the judges thereof; if it be not he, who then is it? 25 Now my days are swifter than a post: they flee away, they see no good. 26 They are passed away as the swift ships: as the eagle that swoopeth on the prey. 27 If I say, I will forget my complaint, I will put off my sad countenance, and be of good cheer: 28 I am afraid of all my sorrows, I know that thou wilt not hold me innocent. 29 I shall be condemned; why then do I labour in vain? 30 If I wash myself with snow water, and make my hands never so clean; 31 Yet wilt thou plunge me in the ditch, and mine own clothes shall abhor me. 32 For he is not a man, as I am, that I should answer him, that we should come together in judgment. 33 There is no daysman betwixt us, that might lay his hand upon us both. 34 Let him take his rod away from me, and let not his terror make me afraid: 35 Then would I speak, and not fear him; for I am not so in myself.

1 Então Jó respondeu:

2 "Na verdade, sei que assim é;

porque, como pode o mortal

ser justo diante de Deus?

3 Se quiser discutir com ele,

nem a uma de mil coisas

lhe poderá responder.

4 Ele é sábio de coração

e grande em poder;

quem ousou desafiá-lo

e sobreviveu?

5 Ele é quem remove os montes,

sem que saibam

que na sua ira ele os transtorna.

6 Deus remove a terra do seu lugar,

e faz as suas colunas estremecerem.

7 Ele dá uma ordem ao sol,

e este não sai,

e sela as estrelas.

8 Sozinho ele estende os céus

e anda sobre as costas do mar.

9 Ele fez a Ursa Maior, o Órion,

o Sete-estrelo

e as constelações do Sul.

10 Deus faz coisas grandes

e insondáveis,

e maravilhas

que não se podem enumerar.

11 Eis que ele passa por mim,

e não o vejo;

segue diante de mim,

e não o percebo.

12 Eis que arrebata a presa!

Quem o pode impedir?

Quem lhe dirá:

‘O que estás fazendo?’

13 Deus não revogará

a sua própria ira;

debaixo dele se curvam

os ajudantes

do monstro Raabe."

14 "Como então poderei

eu responder a ele?

Como escolher as minhas palavras,

para argumentar com ele?

15 Ainda que eu fosse justo,

não lhe responderia;

pelo contrário, pediria misericórdia

ao meu Juiz.

16 Ainda que eu o chamasse

e ele me respondesse,

nem por isso eu creria

que ele deu ouvidos

à minha voz.

17 Porque me esmaga

com uma tempestade

e sem motivo multiplica

as minhas feridas.

18 Não me permite respirar,

porque me enche de amargura.

19 Se é uma questão de força,

ele é o forte;

se é uma questão de justiça, ele dirá:

‘Quem pode me intimar?’

20 Ainda que eu seja justo,

a minha boca me condenará;

embora eu seja íntegro,

ela me declarará culpado.

21 Eu sou íntegro,

mas não me importo comigo,

não faço caso da minha vida.

22 Para mim, é tudo a mesma coisa;

por isso, digo:

ele destrói tanto os íntegros

como os perversos.

23 Se um flagelo mata de repente,

ele rirá do desespero

dos inocentes.

24 A terra está entregue

nas mãos dos ímpios,

e Deus ainda cobre o rosto

dos juízes.

Se ele não é o causador disso,

quem seria?"

25 "Os meus dias são mais velozes

do que um corredor;

fogem sem ter visto a felicidade.

26 Passam como barcos de junco,

como a águia que se lança

sobre a presa.

27 Se eu disser: ‘Vou esquecer

a minha queixa,

deixarei o meu ar triste

e ficarei contente’;

28 ainda assim

todas as minhas dores

me apavoram,

porque bem sei que

não me considerarás inocente.

29 Eu serei condenado;

por que, pois, trabalho em vão?

30 Ainda que me lave

com água de neve

e purifique as minhas mãos

com sabão,

31 mesmo assim me submergirás

no lodo,

e as minhas próprias roupas

terão nojo de mim.

32 Porque ele não é ser humano,

como eu,

a quem eu responda,

se formos juntos ao tribunal.

33 Não há entre nós árbitro

que ponha a mão sobre nós dois.

34 Que ele tire a sua vara

de cima de mim,

e que o seu terror

não me amedronte!

35 Então falarei sem o temer;

do contrário,

eu não estaria em mim."
