1 Surely there is a mine for silver, and a place for gold which they refine. 2 Iron is taken out of the earth, and brass is molten out of the stone. 3 Man setteth an end to darkness, and searcheth out to the furthest bound the stones of thick darkness and of the shadow of death. 4 He breaketh open a shaft away from where men sojourn; they are forgotten of the foot that passeth by; they hang afar from men, they swing to and fro. 5 As for the earth, out of it cometh bread: and underneath it is turned up as it were by fire. 6 The stones thereof are the place of sapphires, and it hath dust of gold. 7 That path no bird of prey knoweth, neither hath the falcon’s eye seen it: 8 The proud beasts have not trodden it, nor hath the fierce lion passed thereby. 9 He putteth forth his hand upon the flinty rock; he overturneth the mountains by the roots. 10 He cutteth out channels among the rocks; and his eye seeth every precious thing. 11 He bindeth the streams that they trickle not; and the thing that is hid bringeth he forth to light. 12 But where shall wisdom be found? and where is the place of understanding? 13 Man knoweth not the price thereof; neither is it found in the land of the living. 14 The deep saith, It is not in me: and the sea saith, It is not with me. 15 It cannot be gotten for gold, neither shall silver be weighed for the price thereof. 16 It cannot be valued with the gold of Ophir, with the precious onyx, or the sapphire. 17 Gold and glass cannot equal it: neither shall the exchange thereof be jewels of fine gold. 18 No mention shall be made of coral or of crystal: yea, the price of wisdom is above rubies. 19 The topaz of Ethiopia shall not equal it, neither shall it be valued with pure gold. 20 Whence then cometh wisdom? and where is the place of understanding? 21 Seeing it is hid from the eyes of all living, and kept close from the fowls of the air. 22 Destruction and Death say, We have heard a rumour thereof with our ears. 23 God understandeth the way thereof, and he knoweth the place thereof. 24 For he looketh to the ends of the earth, and seeth under the whole heaven; 25 To make a weight for the wind; yea, he meteth out the waters by measure. 26 When he made a decree for the rain, and a way for the lightning of the thunder: 27 Then did he see it, and declare it; he established it, yea, and searched it out. 28 And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.

1 "Na verdade, a prata
tem as suas minas,
e o ouro, que se refina,
tem o seu lugar.
2 O ferro é tirado da terra,
e da pedra se funde o cobre.
3 Os homens põem termo
à escuridão
e até os últimos confins procuram
as pedras ocultas nas trevas
e na densa escuridão.
4 Abrem entrada para minas
longe da habitação
dos homens;
são esquecidos
pelos que passam por cima;
e, assim, longe de todos,
dependurados em cordas,
balançam de um lado
para outro.
5 Da terra procede o alimento,
mas embaixo ela é revolvida
como que pelo fogo.
6 Nas suas pedras
se encontra safira,
e há pó que contém ouro.
7 Essa vereda,
a ave de rapina a ignora,
e os olhos do falcão nunca a viram.
8 Feras majestosas nunca pisaram
essa vereda,
e nenhum leão passou por ali.
9 O homem estende a sua mão
contra o rochedo
e revolve os montes
desde as suas raízes.
10 Abre canais nas pedras,
e os seus olhos veem tudo
o que há de mais precioso.
11 Tapa os veios de água,
e nem uma gota sai deles;
e traz à luz
o que estava escondido."
12 "Mas onde se achará
a sabedoria?
E em que lugar estará
o entendimento?
13 O ser humano não conhece
o valor da sabedoria,
e ela não se encontra
na terra dos viventes.
14 O abismo diz:
‘Ela não está em mim.’
E o mar diz: ‘Não está comigo.’
15 Não se compra a sabedoria
com ouro fino;
ela também não pode
ser paga com prata.
16 O seu valor
não pode ser avaliado
pelo ouro de Ofir,
nem pelo precioso ônix,
nem pela safira.
17 O ouro não se iguala a ela,
nem o cristal;
não se pode trocá-la
por joias de ouro fino.
18 Ela faz esquecer o coral
e o cristal;
o preço da sabedoria
é maior que o das pérolas.
19 O topázio da Etiópia
não se compara com ela;
não se compra a sabedoria
nem com ouro puro.
20 Mas de onde vem a sabedoria?
E em que lugar
estará o entendimento?
21 Está encoberta aos olhos
de todos os seres vivos,
e oculta às aves do céu.
22 O abismo e a morte dizem:
‘Ouvimos com os nossos ouvidos
a sua fama.’"
23 "Deus lhe entende o caminho,
e ele é quem sabe o seu lugar.
24 Porque o seu olhar
alcança as extremidades
da terra;
ele vê tudo o que há
debaixo dos céus.
25 Quando Deus regulou
o peso do vento
e fixou a medida das águas;
26 quando determinou leis
para a chuva
e caminho para o relâmpago
dos trovões,
27 então ele viu a sabedoria
e a manifestou;
estabeleceu-a
e também a examinou.
28 E disse ao ser humano:
‘Eis que o temor do Senhor
é a sabedoria,
e afastar-se do mal
é o entendimento.’"
