1 And it came to pass, as he was praying in a certain place, that when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, even as John also taught his disciples. 2 And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Father, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. 3 Give us day by day our daily bread. 4 And forgive us our sins; for we ourselves also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And bring us not into temptation. 5 And he said unto them, Which of you shall have a friend, and shall go unto him at midnight, and say to him, Friend, lend me three loaves; 6 for a friend of mine is come to me from a journey, and I have nothing to set before him; 7 and he from within shall answer and say, Trouble me not: the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give thee? 8 I say unto you, Though he will not rise and give him, because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will arise and give him as many as he needeth. 9 And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. 10 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. 11 And of which of you that is a father shall his son ask a loaf, and he give him a stone? or a fish, and he for a fish give him a serpent? 12 Or if he shall ask an egg, will he give him a scorpion? 13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him? 14 And he was casting out a devil which was dumb. And it came to pass, when the devil was gone out, the dumb man spake; and the multitudes marveled. 15 But some of them said, By Beelzebub the prince of the devils casteth he out devils. 16 And others, tempting him, sought of him a sign from heaven. 17 But he, knowing their thoughts, said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house divided against a house falleth. 18 And if Satan also is divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand? because ye say that I cast out devils by Beelzebub. 19 And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your sons cast them out? therefore shall they be your judges. 20 But if I by the finger of God cast out devils, then is the kingdom of God come upon you. 21 When the strong man fully armed guardeth his own court, his goods are in peace: 22 but when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him, he taketh from him his whole armour wherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils. 23 He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth. 24 The unclean spirit when he is gone out of the man, passeth through waterless places, seeking rest; and finding none, he saith, I will turn back unto my house whence I came out. 25 And when he is come, he findeth it swept and garnished. 26 Then goeth he, and taketh to him seven other spirits more evil than himself; and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man becometh worse than the first. 27 And it came to pass, as he said these things, a certain woman out of the multitude lifted up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare thee, and the breasts which thou didst suck. 28 But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it. 29 And when the multitudes were gathering together unto him, he began to say, This generation is an evil generation: it seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it but the sign of Jonah. 30 For even as Jonah became a sign unto the Ninevites, so shall also the Son of man be to this generation. 31 The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation, and shall condemn them: for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and behold, a greater than Solomon is here. 32 The men of Nineveh shall stand up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and behold, a greater than Jonah is here. 33 No man, when he hath lighted a lamp, putteth it in a cellar, neither under the bushel, but on the stand, that they which enter in may see the light. 34 The lamp of thy body is thine eye: when thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light; but when it is evil, thy body also is full of darkness. 35 Look therefore whether the light that is in thee be not darkness. 36 If therefore thy whole body be full of light, having no part dark, it shall be wholly full of light, as when the lamp with its bright shining doth give thee light. 37 Now as he spake, a Pharisee asketh him to dine with him: and he went in, and sat down to meat. 38 And when the Pharisee saw it, he marveled that he had not first washed before dinner. 39 And the Lord said unto him, Now do ye Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the platter; but your inward part is full of extortion and wickedness. 40 Ye foolish ones, did not he that made the outside make the inside also? 41 Howbeit give for alms those things which are within; and behold, all things are clean unto you. 42 But woe unto you Pharisees! for ye tithe mint and rue and every herb, and pass over judgment and the love of God: but these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. 43 Woe unto you Pharisees! for ye love the chief seats in the synagogues, and the salutations in the marketplaces. 44 Woe unto you! for ye are as the tombs which appear not, and the men that walk over them know it not. 45 And one of the lawyers answering saith unto him, Master, in saying this thou reproachest us also. 46 And he said, Woe unto you lawyers also! for ye lade men with burdens grievous to be borne, and ye yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers. 47 Woe unto you! for ye build the tombs of the prophets, and your fathers killed them. 48 So ye are witnesses and consent unto the works of your fathers: for they killed them, and ye build their tombs. 49 Therefore also said the wisdom of God, I will send unto them prophets and apostles; and some of them they shall kill and persecute; 50 that the blood of all the prophets, which was shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation; 51 from the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zachariah, who perished between the altar and the sanctuary: yea, I say unto you, it shall be required of this generation. 52 Woe unto you lawyers! for ye took away the key of knowledge: ye entered not in yourselves, and them that were entering in ye hindered. 53 And when he was come out from thence, the scribes and the Pharisees began to press upon him vehemently, and to provoke him to speak of many things; 54 laying wait for him, to catch something out of his mouth.

1 Jesus estava orando em certo lugar e, quando terminou, um dos seus discípulos lhe pediu:

— Senhor, ensine-nos a orar como também João ensinou os discípulos dele.

2 Então Jesus disse:

— Quando vocês orarem, digam:

"Pai,

santificado seja o teu nome;

venha o teu Reino;

3 o pão nosso de cada dia

dá-nos diariamente;

4 perdoa-nos os nossos pecados,

pois também nós perdoamos

a todo o que nos deve;

e não nos deixes cair em tentação."

5 Jesus disse ainda:

— Se um de vocês tiver um amigo e for procurá-lo à meia-noite, dizendo: "Amigo, me empreste três pães, 6 porque outro amigo meu chegou de viagem e eu não tenho nada para lhe oferecer"; 7 e se o outro lhe responder lá de dentro: "Deixe-me em paz! A porta já está fechada, e eu e os meus filhos já estamos deitados. Não posso me levantar para lhe dar os pães", 8 digo a vocês que, se ele não se levantar para dar esses pães por ser seu amigo, ele o fará por causa do incômodo e lhe dará tudo de que tiver necessidade.

9 — Por isso, digo a vocês: Peçam e lhes será dado; busquem e acharão; batam, e a porta será aberta para vocês. 10 Pois todo o que pede recebe; o que busca encontra; e a quem bate, a porta será aberta. 11 Quem de vocês, sendo pai, daria uma cobra ao filho que lhe pede um peixe? 12 Ou daria um escorpião ao filho que lhe pede um ovo? 13 Ora, se vocês, que são maus, sabem dar coisas boas aos seus filhos, quanto mais o Pai celeste dará o Espírito Santo aos que lhe pedirem!

14 Certo dia, Jesus estava expulsando um demônio que era mudo. E aconteceu que, ao sair o demônio, o mudo passou a falar. E as multidões se admiravam. 15 Mas alguns deles diziam:

— Ele expulsa os demônios pelo poder de Belzebu, o maioral dos demônios.

16 E outros, tentando-o, pediam dele um sinal vindo do céu. 17 Mas Jesus, sabendo o que passava pela mente deles, disse-lhes:

— Todo reino dividido contra si mesmo ficará deserto, e casa sobre casa cairá. 18 Se também Satanás estiver dividido contra si mesmo, como o seu reino subsistirá? Isto porque vocês dizem que eu expulso os demônios por Belzebu. 19 E, se eu expulso os demônios por Belzebu, por quem os filhos de vocês os expulsam? Por isso, eles mesmos serão os juízes de vocês. 20 Se, porém, eu expulso os demônios pelo dedo de Deus, certamente é chegado o Reino de Deus sobre vocês. 21 Quando o valente, bem-armado, guarda a sua própria casa, todos os seus bens ficam em segurança. 22 Mas, se aparece alguém mais valente do que ele, vence-o, tira-lhe a armadura em que confiava e reparte os seus despojos. 23 Quem não é por mim é contra mim; e quem comigo não ajunta espalha.

24 — Quando o espírito imundo sai de uma pessoa, anda por lugares áridos, procurando repouso. E, não o achando, diz: "Voltarei para a minha casa, de onde saí." 25 E, voltando, a encontra varrida e arrumada. 26 Então vai e leva consigo outros sete espíritos, piores do que ele, e, entrando, habitam ali. E o último estado daquela pessoa se torna pior do que o primeiro.

27 Aconteceu que, ao dizer Jesus estas palavras, uma mulher, que estava no meio da multidão, disse a ele, erguendo a voz:

— Bem-aventurado o ventre que concebeu você e os seios que o amamentaram!

28 Jesus, porém, respondeu:

— Pelo contrário! Mais bem-aventurados são os que ouvem a palavra de Deus e a guardam!

29 Visto que aumentavam as multidões em volta dele, Jesus começou a dizer:

— Esta é uma geração perversa! Pede sinal; mas nenhum sinal lhe será dado, senão o de Jonas. 30 Porque, assim como Jonas foi sinal para os ninivitas, o Filho do Homem o será para esta geração. 31 A rainha do Sul se levantará, no Juízo, com os homens desta geração e os condenará, porque veio dos confins da terra para ouvir a sabedoria de Salomão. E aqui está quem é maior do que Salomão. 32 Ninivitas se levantarão, no Juízo, com esta geração e a condenarão, porque se arrependeram com a pregação de Jonas. E aqui está quem é maior do que Jonas.

33 — Ninguém, depois de acender uma lamparina, a coloca em lugar escondido, nem debaixo de um cesto, mas num lugar em que ilumina bem, a fim de que os que entram vejam a luz. 34 Os olhos são a lâmpada do corpo. Se os seus olhos forem bons, todo o seu corpo será cheio de luz; mas, se forem maus, o seu corpo ficará em trevas. 35 Portanto, tenha cuidado para que a luz que está em você não sejam trevas. 36 Pois, se todo o seu corpo for luminoso, sem ter qualquer parte em trevas, será todo resplandecente como a lamparina quando ilumina você em plena luz.

37 Ao falar Jesus estas palavras, um fariseu o convidou para uma refeição na sua casa. Entrando na casa, Jesus tomou lugar à mesa. 38 O fariseu admirou-se ao ver que Jesus não tinha se lavado antes de comer. 39 Mas o Senhor lhe disse:

— Vocês, fariseus, limpam o exterior do copo e do prato; mas o interior de vocês está cheio de roubo e de maldade. 40 Seus tolos! Quem fez o exterior não é o mesmo que fez o interior? 41 Mas deem como esmola o que está dentro do copo e do prato, e tudo lhes será limpo. 42 Mas ai de vocês, fariseus! Porque vocês dão o dízimo da hortelã, da arruda e de todas as hortaliças, e desprezam a justiça e o amor de Deus. Vocês deveriam fazer estas coisas, sem omitir aquelas. 43 Ai de vocês, fariseus! Porque gostam da primeira cadeira nas sinagogas e das saudações nas praças. 44 Ai de vocês que são como as sepulturas invisíveis, sobre as quais as pessoas passam sem perceber!

45 Então, tomando a palavra, um dos intérpretes da Lei disse a Jesus:

— Mestre, ao dizer estas coisas o senhor está ofendendo também a nós!

46 Mas Jesus respondeu:

— Ai de vocês também, intérpretes da Lei! Porque sobrecarregam os outros com fardos superiores às suas forças, mas vocês nem sequer com um dedo tocam nesses fardos. 47 Ai de vocês! Porque edificam os túmulos dos profetas que os pais de vocês assassinaram. 48 Assim, são testemunhas e aprovam com cumplicidade as obras dos pais de vocês; porque eles mataram os profetas, e vocês edificam túmulos para eles. 49 Por isso, também disse a sabedoria de Deus: "Mandarei para eles profetas e apóstolos, e a alguns deles matarão e a outros perseguirão", 50 para que desta geração se peçam contas do sangue dos profetas, derramado desde a fundação do mundo, 51 desde o sangue de Abel até o sangue de Zacarias, que foi assassinado entre o altar e o santuário. Sim, eu afirmo a vocês que se pedirão contas a esta geração. 52 Ai de vocês, intérpretes da Lei! Porque vocês pegaram a chave do conhecimento. No entanto, vocês mesmos não entraram e impediram os que estavam entrando.

53 Quando Jesus saiu dali, os escribas e fariseus começaram a contestá-lo com veemência, fazendo perguntas a respeito de muitos assuntos, 54 com o objetivo de tirar daquilo que ele dizia um motivo para o acusar.
