1 Behold, I send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple; and the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in, behold, he cometh, saith the LORD of hosts. 2 But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner’s fire, and like fullers’ soap: 3 and he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver; and they shall offer unto the LORD offerings in righteousness. 4 Then shall the offering of Judah and Jerusalem be pleasant unto the LORD, as in the days of old, and as in ancient years. 5 And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers; and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the stranger from his right, and fear not me, saith the LORD of hosts. 6 For I the LORD change not; therefore ye, O sons of Jacob, are not consumed. 7 From the days of your fathers ye have turned aside from mine ordinances, and have not kept them. Return unto me, and I will return unto you, saith the LORD of hosts. But ye say, Wherein shall we return? 8 Will a man rob God? yet ye rob me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings. 9 Ye are cursed with the curse; for ye rob me, even this whole nation. 10 Bring ye the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it. 11 And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the LORD of hosts. 12 And all nations shall call you happy: for ye shall he a delightsome land, saith the LORD of hosts. 13 Your words have been stout against me, saith the LORD. Yet ye say, Wherein have we spoken against thee? 14 Ye have said, It is vain to serve God: and what profit is it that we have kept his charge, and that we have walked mournfully before the LORD of hosts? 15 And now we call the proud happy; yea, they that work wickedness are built up; yea, they tempt God, and are delivered. 16 Then they that feared the LORD spake one with another: and the LORD hearkened, and heard, and a book of remembrance was written before him, for them that feared the LORD, and that thought upon his name. 17 And they shall be mine, saith the LORD of hosts, in the day that I do make, even a peculiar treasure; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him. 18 Then shall ye return and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God and him that serveth him not.

1 — Eis que eu envio o meu mensageiro, que preparará o caminho diante de mim. De repente, o Senhor, a quem vocês buscam, virá ao seu templo; e o mensageiro da aliança, a quem vocês desejam, eis que ele vem, diz o Senhor dos Exércitos.

2 Mas quem poderá suportar o dia da sua vinda? E quem poderá subsistir quando ele aparecer? Porque ele é como o fogo do ourives e como o sabão dos lavandeiros. 3 Ele se assentará como derretedor e purificador de prata. Purificará os filhos de Levi e os refinará como ouro e como prata. E eles trarão ao Senhor as ofertas justas. 4 Então a oferta de Judá e de Jerusalém será agradável ao Senhor, como nos dias da antiguidade e como nos primeiros anos.

5 — Virei até vocês para juízo. Terei pressa em testemunhar contra os feiticeiros, contra os adúlteros, contra os que juram falsamente, contra os que oprimem os trabalhadores, as viúvas e os órfãos, torcem o direito dos estrangeiros, e não me temem, diz o Senhor dos Exércitos.

6 — Porque eu, o Senhor, não mudo; por isso, vocês, filhos de Jacó, não foram destruídos. 7 Desde os dias dos seus pais, vocês se afastaram dos meus estatutos e não os guardaram. Voltem para mim, e eu voltarei para vocês, diz o Senhor dos Exércitos. Mas vocês perguntam: "Como havemos de voltar?" 8 Será que alguém pode roubar a Deus? Mas vocês estão me roubando e ainda perguntam: "Em que te roubamos?" Nos dízimos e nas ofertas. 9 Com maldição vocês são amaldiçoados, porque estão me roubando, vocês, a nação toda. 10 Tragam todos os dízimos à casa do Tesouro, para que haja mantimento na minha casa. Ponham-me à prova nisto, diz o Senhor dos Exércitos, se eu não lhes abrir as janelas do céu e não derramar sobre vocês bênção sem medida. 11 Por causa de vocês, repreenderei o devorador, para que não consuma os produtos da terra, e não deixarei que as suas videiras nos campos fiquem sem frutos, diz o Senhor dos Exércitos. 12 Todas as nações dirão que vocês são felizes, porque vocês serão uma terra de delícias, diz o Senhor dos Exércitos.

13 — Vocês disseram palavras duras contra mim, diz o Senhor, e ainda perguntam: "O que falamos contra ti?" 14 Vocês dizem: "É inútil servir a Deus. De que nos adianta guardar os seus preceitos e andar de luto diante do Senhor dos Exércitos? 15 Agora, pois, nós vamos dizer que os soberbos é que são felizes. Também os que praticam o mal prosperam; sim, eles tentam o Senhor e escapam."

16 Então os que temiam o Senhor falavam uns aos outros. O Senhor escutou com atenção o que diziam. Havia um memorial escrito diante dele para os que temem o Senhor e para os que se lembram do seu nome.

17 — Eles serão a minha propriedade peculiar, naquele dia que prepararei, diz o Senhor dos Exércitos. Eu os pouparei como um homem poupa seu filho que o serve. 18 Então vocês verão mais uma vez a diferença entre o justo e o ímpio, entre o que serve a Deus e o que não o serve.
