1 And Moses answered and said, But, behold, they will not believe me, nor hearken unto my voice: for they will say, The LORD hath not appeared unto thee. 2 And the LORD said unto him, What is that in thine hand? And he said, A rod. 3 And he said, Cast it on the ground. And he cast it on the ground, and it became a serpent; and Moses fled from before it. 4 And the LORD said unto Moses, Put forth thine hand, and take it by the tail. And he put forth his hand, and caught it, and it became a rod in his hand: 5 That they may believe that the LORD God of their fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath appeared unto thee.

  2. NIV New International Version

1 Moses answered, "What if they do not believe me or listen to me and say, ‘The Lord did not appear to you’?"

2 Then the Lord said to him, "What is that in your hand?"

    "A staff," he replied.

3 The Lord said, "Throw it on the ground."

Moses threw it on the ground and it became a snake, and he ran from it. 4 Then the Lord said to him, "Reach out your hand and take it by the tail." So Moses reached out and took hold of the snake and it turned back into a staff in his hand. 5 "This," said the Lord, "is so that they may believe that the Lord, the God of their fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob—has appeared to you."

  3. NLT New Living Translation

1 But Moses protested again, "What if they won’t believe me or listen to me? What if they say, ‘The Lord never appeared to you’?"

2 Then the Lord asked him, "What is that in your hand?"

    "A shepherd’s staff," Moses replied.

3 "Throw it down on the ground," the Lord told him. So Moses threw down the staff, and it turned into a snake! Moses jumped back.

4 Then the Lord told him, "Reach out and grab its tail." So Moses reached out and grabbed it, and it turned back into a shepherd’s staff in his hand.

5 "Perform this sign," the Lord told him. "Then they will believe that the Lord, the God of their ancestors—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob—really has appeared to you."

  4. NKJV Nova Versão King James

He cast it down, and it was turned into a serpent: so that Moses fled from it. 4 And the Lord said: Put out thy hand and take it by the tail. He put forth his hand, and took hold of it, and it was turned into a rod. 5 That they may believe, saith he, that the Lord God of their fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath appeared to thee.

  8. MSG The Message

1 Moses objected, "They won’t trust me. They won’t listen to a word I say. They’re going to say, ‘God? Appear to him? Hardly!’"

2 So God said, "What’s that in your hand?"

    "A staff."

3 "Throw it on the ground." He threw it. It became a snake; Moses jumped back—fast!

4,5 God said to Moses, "Reach out and grab it by the tail." He reached out and grabbed it—and he was holding his staff again. "That’s so they will trust that God appeared to you, the God of their fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob."
