1 Voi stessi, fratelli, sapete che la nostra venuta tra voi non è stata invano;

2 anzi, sebbene avessimo prima patito e fossimo stati oltraggiati, come sapete, a Filippi, pur ci siamo rinfrancati nell’Iddio nostro, per annunziarvi l’Evangelo di Dio in mezzo a molte lotte.

3 Poiché la nostra esortazione non procede da impostura, né da motivi impuri, né è fatta con frode;

4 ma siccome siamo stati approvati da Dio che ci ha stimati tali da poterci affidare l’Evangelo, parliamo in modo da piacere non agli uomini, ma a Dio che prova i nostri cuori.

5 Difatti, non abbiamo mai usato un parlar lusinghevole, come ben sapete, né pretesti ispirati da upidigia; Iddio ne è testimone.

6 E non abbiam cercato gloria dagli uomini, né da voi, né da altri, quantunque, come apostoli di Cristo, avessimo potuto far valere la nostra autorità;

7 invece, siamo stati mansueti in mezzo a voi, come una nutrice che cura teneramente i propri figliuoli.

8 Così, nel nostro grande affetto per voi, eravamo disposti a darvi non soltanto l’Evangelo di Dio, ma anche le nostre proprie vite, tanto ci eravate divenuti cari.

9 Perché, fratelli, voi la ricordate la nostra fatica e la nostra pena; egli è lavorando notte e giorno per non essere d’aggravio ad alcuno di voi, che v’abbiam predicato l’Evangelo di Dio.

10 Voi siete testimoni, e Dio lo è pure, del modo santo, giusto e irreprensibile con cui ci siamo comportati verso voi che credete;

11 e sapete pure che, come fa un padre coi suoi figliuoli, noi abbiamo esortato,

12 confortato e scongiurato ciascun di voi a condursi in modo degno di Dio, che vi chiama al suo regno e alla sua gloria.

13 E per questa ragione anche noi rendiamo del continuo grazie a Dio: perché quando riceveste da noi la parola della predicazione, cioè la parola di Dio, voi l’accettaste non come parola d’uomini, ma, quale essa è veramente, come parola di Dio, la quale opera efficacemente in voi che credete.

14 Poiché, fratelli, voi siete divenuti imitatori delle chiese di Dio che sono in Cristo Gesù nella Giudea; in quanto che anche voi avete sofferto dai vostri connazionali le stesse cose che quelle chiese hanno sofferto dai Giudei,

15 i quali hanno ucciso e il Signor Gesù e i profeti, hanno cacciato noi, e non piacciono a Dio, e sono avversi a tutti gli uomini,

16 divietandoci di parlare ai Gentili perché sieno salvati. Essi vengon così colmando senza posa la misura dei loro peccati; ma ormai li ha raggiunti l’ira finale.

17 Quant’è a noi, fratelli, orbati di voi per breve tempo, di persona, non di cuore, abbiamo tanto maggiormente cercato, con gran desiderio, di veder la vostra faccia.

18 Perciò abbiam voluto, io Paolo almeno, non una ma due volte, venir a voi; ma Satana ce lo ha impedito.

19 Qual è infatti la nostra speranza, o la nostra allegrezza, o la corona di cui ci gloriamo? Non siete forse voi, nel cospetto del nostro Signor Gesù quand’egli verrà?

20 Sì, certo, la nostra gloria e la nostra allegrezza siete voi.

1 For ye know yourselves, brethren, our entering in which {we had} to you, that it has not been in vain;

2 but, having suffered before and been insulted, even as ye know, in Philippi, we were bold in our God to speak unto you the glad tidings of God with much earnest striving.

3 For our exhortation {was} not of deceit, nor of uncleanness, nor in guile;

4 but even as we have been approved of God to have the glad tidings entrusted to us, so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, who proves our hearts.

5 For we have not at any time been {among you} with flattering discourse, even as ye know, nor with a pretext for covetousness, God {is} witness;

6 nor seeking glory from men, neither from you nor from others, when we might have been a charge as Christ's apostles;

7 but have been gentle in the midst of you, as a nurse would cherish her own children.

8 Thus, yearning over you, we had found our delight in having imparted to you not only the glad tidings of God, but our own lives also, because ye had become beloved of us.

9 For ye remember, brethren, our labour and toil: working night and day, not to be chargeable to any one of you, we have preached to you the glad tidings of God.

10 *Ye* {are} witnesses, and God, how piously and righteously and blamelessly we have conducted ourselves with you that believe:

11 as ye know how, as a father his own children, we used to exhort each one of you, and comfort and testify,

12 that ye should walk worthy of God, who calls you to his own kingdom and glory.

13 And for this cause we also give thanks to God unceasingly that, having received {the} word of {the} report of God by us, ye accepted, not men's word, but, even as it is truly, God's word, which also works in you who believe.

14 For *ye*, brethren, have become imitators of the assemblies of God which are in Judaea in Christ Jesus; for *ye* also have suffered the same things of your own countrymen as also *they* of the Jews,

15 who have both slain the Lord Jesus and the prophets, and have driven us out by persecution, and do not please God, and {are} against all men,

16 forbidding us to speak to the nations that they may be saved, that they may fill up their sins always: but wrath has come upon them to the uttermost.

17 But we, brethren, having been bereaved of you and separated for a little moment in person, not in heart, have used more abundant diligence to see your face with much desire;

18 wherefore we have desired to come to you, even I Paul, both once and twice, and Satan has hindered us.

19 For what {is} our hope, or joy, or crown of boasting? {are} not *ye* also before our Lord Jesus at his coming?

20 for ye are our glory and joy.
