Or ci fu la carestia nel paese, oltre la prima carestia che cera stata al tempo dAbrahamo. E Isacco andò da Abimelec, re dei Filistei, a Gherar. 
E lEterno gli apparve e gli disse: "Non scendere in Egitto; dimora nel paese che io ti dirò. 
Soggiorna in questo paese, e io sarò teco e ti benedirò, poiché io darò a te e alla tua progenie tutti questi paesi, e manterrò il giuramento che feci ad Abrahamo tuo padre, 
e moltiplicherò la tua progenie come le stelle del cielo, darò alla tua progenie tutti questi paesi, e tutte le nazioni della terra saranno benedette nella tua progenie, 
perché Abrahamo ubbidì alla mia voce e osservò quello che gli avevo ordinato, i miei comandamenti, i miei statuti e le mie leggi". 
E Isacco dimorò in Gherar. 
E quando la gente del luogo gli faceva delle domande intorno alla sua moglie, egli rispondeva: "E mia sorella"; perché avea paura di dire: "E mia moglie". "Non vorrei," egli pensava, "che la gente del luogo avesse ad uccidermi, a motivo di Rebecca". Poiché ella era di bellaspetto. 
Ora, prolungandosi quivi il suo soggiorno, avvenne che Abimelec re de Filistei, mentre guardava dalla finestra, vide Isacco che scherzava con Rebecca sua moglie. 
E Abimelec chiamò Isacco, e gli disse: "Certo, costei è tua moglie; come mai dunque, hai detto: E mia sorella?" E Isacco rispose: "Perché dicevo: Non vorrei esser messo a morte a motivo di lei". 
E Abimelec: "Che cosè questo che ci hai fatto? Poco è mancato che qualcuno del popolo si giacesse con tua moglie, e tu ci avresti tirato addosso una gran colpa". 
E Abimelec diede questordine a tutto il popolo: "Chiunque toccherà questuomo o sua moglie sia messo a morte". 
Isacco seminò in quel paese, e in quellanno raccolse il centuplo; e lEterno lo benedisse. 
Questuomo divenne grande, andò crescendo sempre più, finché diventò grande oltremisura. 
Fu padrone di greggi di pecore, di mandre di buoi e di numerosa servitù. I Filistei lo invidiavano; 
e perciò turarono ed empiron di terra tutti i pozzi che i servi di suo padre aveano scavati al tempo dAbrahamo suo padre. 
E Abimelec disse ad Isacco: "Vattene da noi, poiché tu sei molto più potente di noi". 
Isacco allora si partì di là, saccampò nella valle di Gherar, e quivi dimorò. 
E Isacco scavò di nuovo i pozzi dacqua cherano stati scavati al tempo dAbrahamo suo padre, e che i ilistei avean turati dopo la morte dAbrahamo; e pose loro gli stessi nomi che avea loro posto suo padre. 
E i servi dIsacco scavarono nella valle, e vi trovarono un pozzo dacqua viva. 
Ma i pastori di Gherar altercarono coi pastori dIsacco, dicendo: "Lacqua è nostra". Ed egli chiamò il pozzo Esek, perché quelli aveano conteso con lui. 
Poi i servi scavarono un altro pozzo, e per questo ancora quelli altercarono. E Isacco lo chiamò Sitna. 
Allora egli si partì di là, e scavò un altro pozzo per il quale quelli non altercarono. Ed egli lo chiamò ehoboth "perché," disse, "ora lEterno ci ha messi al largo, e noi prospereremo nel paese". 
Poi di là Isacco salì a Beer-Sceba. 
E lEterno gli apparve quella stessa notte, e gli disse: "Io sono lIddio dAbrahamo tuo padre; non temere, poiché io sono teco e ti benedirò e moltiplicherò la tua progenie per amor dAbrahamo mio servo". 
Ed egli edificò quivi un altare, invocò il nome dellEterno, e vi piantò la sua tenda. E i servi dIsacco scavaron quivi un pozzo. 
Abimelec andò a lui da Gherar con Ahuzath, suo amico, e con Picol, capo del suo esercito. 
E Isacco disse loro: "Perché venite da me, giacché mi odiate e mavete mandato via dal vostro paese?" 
E quelli risposero: "Noi abbiam chiaramente veduto che lEterno è teco; e abbiam detto: Si faccia ora un giuramento fra noi, fra noi e te, e facciam lega teco. 
Giura che non ci farai alcun male, così come noi non tabbiamo toccato, e non tabbiamo fatto altro che del bene, e tabbiamo lasciato andare in pace. Tu sei ora benedetto dallEterno". 
E Isacco fece loro un convito, ed essi mangiarono e bevvero. 
La mattina dipoi si levarono di buonora e si fecero scambievole giuramento. Poi Isacco li accomiatò, e quelli si partirono da lui in pace. 
Or avvenne che, in quello stesso giorno, i servi dIsacco gli vennero a dar notizia del pozzo che aveano scavato, dicendogli: "Abbiam trovato dellacqua". 
Ed egli lo chiamò Sciba. Per questo la città porta il nome di Beer-Sceba, fino al di doggi. 
Or Esaù, in età di quarantanni, prese per moglie Judith, figliuola di Beeri, lo Hitteo, e Basmath, figliuola di Elon, lo Hitteo. 
(26:34) Esse furon cagione damarezza danimo a Isacco ed a Rebecca. 

And there is a famine in the land, besides the first famine which was in the days of Abraham, and Isaac goeth unto Abimelech king of the Philistines, to Gerar. 
And Jehovah appeareth unto him, and saith, `Go not down towards Egypt, tabernacle in the land concerning which I speak unto thee, 
sojourn in this land, and I am with thee, and bless thee, for to thee and to thy seed I give all these lands, and I have established the oath which I have sworn to Abraham thy father; 
and I have multiplied thy seed as stars of the heavens, and I have given to thy seed all these lands; and blessed themselves in thy seed have all nations of the earth; 
because that Abraham hath hearkened to My voice, and keepeth My charge, My commands, My statutes, and My laws.` 
And Isaac dwelleth in Gerar; 
and men of the place ask him of his wife, and he saith, `She [is] my sister:` for he hath been afraid to say, `My wife -- lest the men of the place kill me for Rebekah, for she [is] of good appearance.` 
And it cometh to pass, when the days have been prolonged to him there, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looketh through the window, and seeth, and lo, Isaac is playing with Rebekah his wife. 
And Abimelech calleth for Isaac, and saith, `Lo, she [is] surely thy wife; and how hast thou said, She [is] my sister?` and Isaac saith unto him, `Because I said, Lest I die for her.` 
And Abimelech saith, `What [is] this thou hast done to us? as a little thing one of the people had lain with thy wife, and thou hadst brought upon us guilt;` 
and Abimelech commandeth all the people, saying, `He who cometh against this man or against his wife, dying doth die.` 
And Isaac soweth in that land, and findeth in that year a hundredfold, and Jehovah blesseth him; 
and the man is great, and goeth on, going on and becoming great, till that he hath been very great, 
and he hath possession of a flock, and possession of a herd, and an abundant service; and the Philistines envy him, 
and all the wells which his father`s servants digged in the days of Abraham his father, the Philistines have stopped them, and fill them with dust. 
And Abimelech saith unto Isaac, `Go from us; for thou hast become much mightier than we;` 
and Isaac goeth from thence, and encampeth in the valley of Gerar, and dwelleth there; 
and Isaac turneth back, and diggeth the wells of water which they digged in the days of Abraham his father, which the Philistines do stop after the death of Abraham, and he calleth to them names according to the names which his father called them. 
And Isaac`s servants dig in the valley, and find there a well of living water, 
and shepherds of Gerar strive with shepherds of Isaac, saying, `The water [is] ours;` and he calleth the name of the well `Strife,` because they have striven habitually with him; 
and they dig another well, and they strive also for it, and he calleth its name `Hatred.` 
And he removeth from thence, and diggeth another well, and they have not striven for it, and he calleth its name Enlargements, and saith, `For -- now hath Jehovah given enlargement to us, and we have been fruitful in the land.` 
And he goeth up from thence [to] Beer-Sheba, 
and Jehovah appeareth unto him during that night, and saith, `I [am] the God of Abraham thy father, fear not, for I [am] with thee, and have blessed thee, and have multiplied thy seed, because of Abraham My servant;` 
and he buildeth there an altar, and preacheth in the name of Jehovah, and stretcheth out there his tent, and there Isaac`s servants dig a well. 
And Abimelech hath gone unto him from Gerar, and Ahuzzath his friend, and Phichol head of his host; 
and Isaac saith unto them, `Wherefore have ye come unto me, and ye have hated me, and ye send me away from you?` 
And they say, `We have certainly seen that Jehovah hath been with thee, and we say, `Let there be, we pray thee, an oath between us, between us and thee, and let us make a covenant with thee; 
do not evil with us, as we have not touched thee, and as we have only done good with thee, and send thee away in peace; thou [art] now blessed of Jehovah.` 
And he maketh for them a banquet, and they eat and drink, 
and rise early in the morning, and swear one to another, and Isaac sendeth them away, and they go from him in peace. 
And it cometh to pass during that day that Isaac`s servants come and declare to him concerning the circumstances of the well which they have digged, and say to him, `We have found water;` 
and he calleth it Shebah, [oath,] therefore the name of the city [is] Beer-Sheba, [well of the oath,] unto this day. 
And Esau is a son of forty years, and he taketh a wife, Judith, daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Bashemath, daughter of Elon the Hittite, 
and they are a bitterness of spirit to Isaac and to Rebekah.
