Dopo queste cose ci fu una festa de Giudei, e Gesù salì a Gerusalemme. 
Or a Gerusalemme, presso la porta delle Pecore, vè una vasca, chiamata in ebraico Betesda, che ha cinque portici. 
Sotto questi portici giaceva un gran numero dinfermi, di ciechi, di zoppi, di paralitici, i quali aspettavano lagitarsi dellacqua; 
perché un angelo scendeva nella vasca e metteva lacqua in movimento; e il primo che vi scendeva dopo che lacqua era stata agitata, era guarito di qualunque malattia fosse colpito. 
E quivi era un uomo, che da trentottanni era infermo. 
Gesù, vedutolo che giaceva e sapendo che già da gran tempo stava così, gli disse: Vuoi esser risanato? 
Linfermo gli rispose: Signore, io non ho alcuno che, quando lacqua è mossa, mi metta nella vasca, e mentre ci vengo io, un altro vi scende prima di me. 
Gesù gli disse: Lèvati, prendi il tuo lettuccio, e cammina. 
E in quellistante quelluomo fu risanato; e preso il suo lettuccio, si mise a camminare. 
Or quel giorno era un sabato; perciò i Giudei dissero alluomo guarito: E sabato, e non ti è lecito portare il tuo lettuccio. 
Ma egli rispose loro: E colui che mha guarito, che mha detto: Prendi il tuo lettuccio e cammina. 
Essi gli domandarono: Chi è quelluomo che tha detto: Prendi il tuo lettuccio e cammina? 
Ma colui chera stato guarito non sapeva chi fosse; perché Gesù era scomparso, essendovi in quel luogo molta gente. 
Di poi Gesù lo trovò nel tempio, e gli disse: Ecco, tu sei guarito; non peccar più, che non taccada di peggio. 
Quelluomo se ne andò, e disse ai Giudei che Gesù era quel che lavea risanato. 
E per questo i Giudei perseguitavano Gesù e cercavan ducciderlo; perché facea quelle cose di sabato. 
Gesù rispose loro: Il Padre mio opera fino ad ora, ed anche io opero. 
Perciò dunque i Giudei più che mai cercavan ducciderlo; perché non soltanto violava il sabato, ma hiamava Dio suo Padre, facendosi uguale a Dio. 
Gesù quindi rispose e disse loro: In verità, in verità io vi dico che il Figliuolo non può da se stesso far cosa alcuna, se non la vede fare dal Padre; perché le cose che il Padre fa, anche il Figlio le fa similmente. 
Poiché il Padre ama il Figliuolo, e gli mostra tutto quello che Egli fa; e gli mostrerà delle opere maggiori di queste, affinché ne restiate maravigliati. 
Difatti, come il Padre risuscita i morti e li vivifica, così anche il Figliuolo vivifica chi vuole. 
Oltre a ciò, il Padre non giudica alcuno, ma ha dato tutto il giudicio al Figliuolo, 
affinché tutti onorino il Figliuolo come onorano il Padre. Chi non onora il Figliuolo non onora il Padre che lha mandato. 
In verità, in verità io vi dico: Chi ascolta la mia parola e crede a Colui che mi ha mandato, ha vita eterna; e non viene in giudizio, ma è passato dalla morte alla vita. 
In verità, in verità io vi dico: Lora viene, anzi è già venuta, che i morti udranno la voce del Figliuol di io; e quelli che lavranno udita, vivranno. 
Perché come il Padre ha vita in se stesso, così ha dato anche al Figliuolo daver vita in se stesso; 
e gli ha dato autorità di giudicare, perché è il Figliuol delluomo. 
Non vi maravigliate di questo; perché lora viene in cui tutti quelli che sono nei sepolcri, udranno la sua voce e ne verranno fuori: 
quelli che hanno operato bene, in risurrezione di vita; e quelli che hanno operato male, in risurrezion di giudicio. 
Io non posso far nulla da me stesso; come odo, giudico; e il mio giudicio è giusto, perché cerco non la mia propria volontà, ma la volontà di Colui che mi ha mandato. 
Se io rendo testimonianza di me stesso, la mia testimonianza non è verace. 
Vè un altro che rende testimonianza di me; e io so che la testimonianza chegli rende di me, è verace. 
Voi avete mandato da Giovanni, ed egli ha reso testimonianza alla verità. 
Io però la testimonianza non la prendo dalluomo, ma dico questo affinché voi siate salvati. 
Egli era la lampada ardente e splendente e voi avete voluto per breve ora godere alla sua luce. 
Ma io ho una testimonianza maggiore di quella di Giovanni; perché le opere che il Padre mi ha dato a compiere, quelle opere stesse che io fo, testimoniano di me che il Padre mi ha mandato. 
E il Padre che mi ha mandato, ha Egli stesso reso testimonianza di me. La sua voce, voi non lavete mai udita; e il suo sembiante, non lavete mai veduto; 
e la sua parola non lavete dimorante in voi, perché non credete in colui chEgli ha mandato. 
Voi investigate le Scritture, perché pensate aver per mezzo desse vita eterna, ed esse son quelle che rendon testimonianza di me; 
eppure non volete venire a me per aver la vita! 
Io non prendo gloria dagli uomini; 
ma vi conosco che non avete lamor di Dio in voi. 
Io son venuto nel nome del Padre mio, e voi non mi ricevete; se un altro verrà nel suo proprio nome, voi lo riceverete. 
Come potete credere, voi che prendete gloria gli uni dagli altri e non cercate la gloria che vien da Dio solo? 
Non crediate che io sia colui che vi accuserà davanti al Padre; vè chi vaccusa, ed è Mosè, nel quale avete riposta la vostra speranza. 
Perché se credeste a Mosè, credereste anche a me; poiché egli ha scritto di me. 
Ma se non credete agli scritti di lui, come crederete alle mie parole? 

After these things there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem, 
and there is in Jerusalem by the sheep-[gate] a pool that is called in Hebrew Bethesda, having five porches, 
in these were lying a great multitude of the ailing, blind, lame, withered, waiting for the moving of the water, 
for a messenger at a set time was going down in the pool, and was troubling the water, the first then having gone in after the troubling of the water, became whole of whatever sickness he was held. 
and there was a certain man there being in ailment thirty and eight years, 
him Jesus having seen lying, and having known that he is already a long time, he saith to him, `Dost thou wish to become whole?` 
The ailing man answered him, `Sir, I have no man, that, when the water may be troubled, he may put me into the pool, and while I am coming, another doth go down before me.` 
Jesus saith to him, `Rise, take up thy couch, and be walking;` 
and immediately the man became whole, and he took up his couch, and was walking, and it was a sabbath on that day, 
the Jews then said to him that hath been healed, `It is a sabbath; it is not lawful to thee to take up the couch.` 
He answered them, `He who made me whole -- that one said to me, Take up thy couch, and be walking;` 
they questioned him, then, `Who is the man who is saying to thee, Take up thy couch and be walking?` 
But he that was healed had not known who he is, for Jesus did move away, a multitude being in the place. 
After these things, Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said to him, `Lo, thou hast become whole; sin no more, lest something worse may happen to thee.` 
The man went away, and told the Jews that it is Jesus who made him whole, 
and because of this were the Jews persecuting Jesus, and seeking to kill him, because these things he was doing on a sabbath. 
And Jesus answered them, `My Father till now doth work, and I work;` 
because of this, then, were the Jews seeking the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the sabbath, but he also called God his own Father, making himself equal to God. 
Jesus therefore responded and said to them, `Verily, verily, I say to you, The Son is not able to do anything of himself, if he may not see the Father doing anything; for whatever things He may do, these also the Son in like manner doth; 
for the Father doth love the Son, and doth shew to him all things that He himself doth; and greater works than these He will shew him, that ye may wonder. 
`For, as the Father doth raise the dead, and doth make alive, so also the Son doth make alive whom he willeth; 
for neither doth the Father judge any one, but all the judgment He hath given to the Son, 
that all may honour the Son according as they honour the Father; he who is not honouring the Son, doth not honour the Father who sent him. 
`Verily, verily, I say to you -- He who is hearing my word, and is believing Him who sent me, hath life age-during, and to judgment he doth not come, but hath passed out of the death to the life. 
`Verily, verily, I say to you -- There cometh an hour, and it now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God, and those having heard shall live; 
for, as the Father hath life in himself, so He gave also to the Son to have life in himself, 
and authority He gave him also to do judgment, because he is Son of Man. 
`Wonder not at this, because there doth come an hour in which all those in the tombs shall hear his voice, 
and they shall come forth; those who did the good things to a rising again of life, and those who practised the evil things to a rising again of judgment. 
`I am not able of myself to do anything; according as I hear I judge, and my judgment is righteous, because I seek not my own will, but the will of the Father who sent me. 
`If I testify concerning myself, my testimony is not true; 
another there is who is testifying concerning me, and I have known that the testimony that he doth testify concerning me is true; 
ye have sent unto John, and he hath testified to the truth. 
`But I do not receive testimony from man, but these things I say that ye may be saved; 
he was the burning and shining lamp, and ye did will to be glad, for an hour, in his light. 
`But I have the testimony greater than John`s, for the works that the Father gave me, that I might finish them, the works themselves that I do, they testify concerning me, that the Father hath sent me. 
`And the Father who sent me Himself hath testified concerning me; ye have neither heard His voice at any time, nor His appearance have ye seen; 
and His word ye have not remaining in you, because whom He sent, him ye do not believe. 
`Ye search the Writings, because ye think in them to have life age-during, and these are they that are testifying concerning me; 
and ye do not will to come unto me, that ye may have life; 
glory from man I do not receive, 
but I have known you, that the love of God ye have not in yourselves. 
`I have come in the name of my Father, and ye do not receive me; if another may come in his own name, him ye will receive; 
how are ye able -- ye -- to believe, glory from one another receiving, and the glory that [is] from God alone ye seek not? 
`Do not think that I will accuse you unto the Father; there is who is accusing you, Moses -- in whom ye have hoped; 
for if ye were believing Moses, ye would have been believing me, for he wrote concerning me; 
but if his writings ye believe not, how shall ye believe my sayings?`
