Gli uomini di Efraim dissero a Gedeone: "Che azione e questa che tu ci hai fatto, non chiamandoci quando sei andato a combattere contro Madian?" Ed ebbero con lui una disputa violenta. 
Ed egli rispose loro: "Che ho fatto io al paragon di voi? la racimolatura dEfraim non vale essa più della vendemmia dAbiezer? 
Iddio vha dato nelle mani i principi di Madian, Oreb e Zeeb! che dunque ho potuto far io al paragon di voi?" Quandegli ebbe lor detto quella parola, la loro ira contro di lui si calmò. 
E Gedeone arrivò al Giordano, e lo passò con i trecento uomini cherano con lui; i quali, benché stanchi, continuavano a inseguire il nemico. 
E disse a quelli di Succoth: "Date, vi prego, dei pani alla gente che mi segue, perché è stanca, ed io sto inseguendo Zebah e Tsalmunna, re di Madian". 
Ma i capi di Succoth risposero: "Tieni tu forse già nelle tue mani i polsi di Zebah e di Tsalmunna, che abbiamo a dar del pane al tuo esercito?" 
E Gedeone disse: "Ebbene! quando lEterno mi avrà dato nelle mani Zebah e Tsalmunna, io vi lacererò le carni con delle spine del deserto e con de triboli". 
Di là salì a Penuel, e parlò a quei di Penuel nello stesso modo; ed essi gli risposero come avean fatto quei di Succoth. 
Ed egli disse anche a quei di Penuel: "Quando tornerò in pace, abbatterò questa torre". 
Or Zebah e Tsalmunna erano a Karkor col loro esercito di circa quindicimila uomini, chera tutto quel che rimaneva dellintero esercito dei figli delloriente, poiché centoventimila uomini che portavano spada erano stati uccisi. 
Gedeone salì per la via di quelli che abitano sotto tende a oriente di Nobah e di Iogbeha, e sconfisse lesercito, che si credeva sicuro. 
E Zebah e Tsalmunna si diedero alla fuga; ma egli li inseguì, prese i due re di Madian, Zebah e salmunna, e sbaragliò tutto lesercito. 
Poi Gedeone, figliuolo di Joas, tornò dalla battaglia, per la salita di Heres. 
Mise le mani sopra un giovane della gente di Succoth, e lo interrogò; ed ei gli diè per iscritto i nomi dei capi e degli anziani di Succoth, cherano settantasette uomini. 
Poi venne alla gente di Succoth, e disse: "Ecco Zebah e Tsalmunna, a proposito de quali minsultaste dicendo: Hai tu forse già nelle mani i polsi di Zebah e di Tsalmunna, che noi abbiamo da dar del pane alla tua gente stanca?" 
E prese gli anziani della città, e con delle spine del deserto e con de triboli castigò gli uomini di uccoth. 
E abbatté la torre di Penuel e uccise la gente della città. 
Poi disse a Zebah e a Tsalmunna: "Comerano gli uomini che avete uccisi al Tabor?" Quelli risposero: "Eran come te; ognun dessi avea laspetto dun figlio di re". 
Ed egli riprese: "Eran miei fratelli, figliuoli di mia madre; comè vero che lEterno vive, se aveste risparmiato loro la vita, io non vi ucciderei!" 
Poi disse a Iether, suo primogenito: "Lèvati, uccidili!" Ma il giovane non tirò la spada, perché avea paura, essendo ancora un giovinetto. 
E Zebah e Tsalmunna dissero: "Lèvati tu stesso e dacci il colpo mortale; poiché qual è luomo tal è la sua forza". E Gedeone si levò e uccise Zebah e Tsalmunna, e prese le mezzelune che i loro cammelli portavano al collo. 
Allora gli uomini dIsraele dissero a Gedeone: "Regna su noi tu e il tuo figliuolo e il figliuolo del tuo figliuolo, giacché ci hai salvati dalla mano di Madian". 
Ma Gedeone rispose loro: "Io non regnerò su voi, né il mio figliuolo regnerà su voi; lEterno è quegli che regnerà su voi!" 
Poi Gedeone disse loro: "Una cosa voglio chiedervi: che ciascun di voi mi dia gli anelli del suo bottino". (I nemici aveano degli anelli doro perché erano Ismaeliti). 
Quelli risposero: "Li daremo volentieri". E stesero un mantello, sul quale ciascuno gettò gli anelli del suo bottino. 
Il peso degli anelli doro chegli avea chiesto fu di mille settecento sicli doro, oltre le mezzelune, i pendenti e le vesti di porpora che i re di Madian aveano addosso, e oltre i collari che i loro cammelli aveano al collo. 
E Gedeone ne fece un efod, che pose in Ofra, sua città; tutto Israele vandò a prostituirsi, ed esso diventò un insidia per Gedeone e per la sua casa. 
Così Madian fu umiliato davanti ai figliuoli dIsraele, e non alzò più il capo; e il paese ebbe requie per quarantanni, durante la vita di Gedeone. 
Ierubbaal figliuolo di Joas, tornò a dimorare a casa sua. 
Or Gedeone ebbe settanta figliuoli, che gli nacquero dalle molte mogli che ebbe. 
E la sua concubina, che stava a Sichem, gli partorì anchella un figliuolo, al quale pose nome bimelec. 
Poi Gedeone, figliuolo di Joas, morì in buona vecchiaia, e fu sepolto nella tomba di Joas suo padre, a fra degli Abiezeriti. 
Dopo che Gedeone fu morto, i figliuoli dIsraele ricominciarono a prostituirsi aglidoli di Baal, e presero Baal-Berith come loro dio. 
I figliuoli dIsraele non si ricordarono dellEterno, del loro Dio, che li avea liberati dalle mani di tutti i loro nemici dognintorno; 
e non dimostrarono alcuna gratitudine alla casa di Ierubbaal, ossia di Gedeone, per tutto il bene chegli avea fatto a Israele. 

And the men of Ephraim say unto him, `What [is] this thing thou hast done to us -- not to call for us when thou didst go to fight with Midian?` and they strive with him severely; 
and he saith unto them, `What have I done now like you? are not the gleanings of Ephraim better than the harvest of Abi-Ezer? 
Into your hand hath God given the heads of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb; and what have I been able to do like you?` Then their temper desisted from off him in his speaking this thing. 
And Gideon cometh in unto the Jordan, passing over, he and the three hundred men who [are] with him -- wearied, and pursuing, 
and he saith to the men of Succoth, `Give, I pray you, cakes of bread to the people who [are] at my feet, for they [are] wearied, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna kings of Midian.` 
And the heads of Succoth say, `Is the hand of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thy hand, that we give to thy host bread?` 
And Gideon saith, `Therefore -- in Jehovah`s giving Zebah and Zalmunna into my hand -- I have threshed your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness, and with the threshing instruments.` 
And he goeth up thence [to] Penuel, and speaketh unto them thus; and the men of Penuel answer him as the men of Succoth answered. 
And he speaketh also to the men of Penuel, saying, `In my turning back in peace, I break down this tower.` 
And Zebah and Zalmunna [are] in Karkor, and their camps with them, about fifteen thousand, all who are left of all the camp of the sons of the east; and those falling [are] a hundred and twenty thousand men, drawing sword. 
And Gideon goeth up the way of those who tabernacle in tents, on the east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and smiteth the camp, and the camp was confident; 
and Zebab and Zalmunna flee, and he pursueth after them, and captureth the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and all the camp he hath caused to tremble. 
And Gideon son of Joash turneth back from the battle, at the going up of the sun, 
and captureth a young man of the men of Succoth, and asketh him, and he describeth unto him the heads of Succoth, and its elders -- seventy and seven men. 
And he cometh in unto the men of Succoth, and saith, `Lo Zebah and Zalmunna, with whom ye reproached me, saying, Is the hand of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thy hand that we give to thy men who [are] wearied bread?` 
And he taketh the elders of the city, and the thorns of the wilderness, and the threshing instruments, and teacheth by them the men of Succoth, 
and the tower of Penuel he hath broken down, and slayeth the men of the city. 
And he saith unto Zebah and unto Zalmunna, `How -- the men whom ye slew in Tabor?` and they say, `As thou -- so they, one -- as the form of the king`s sons.` 
And he saith, `My brethren -- sons of my mother -- they; Jehovah liveth, if ye had kept them alive -- I had not slain you.` 
And he saith to Jether his first-born, `Rise, slay them;` and the young man hath not drawn his sword, for he hath been afraid, for he [is] yet a youth. 
And Zebah saith -- also Zalmunna -- `Rise thou, and fall upon us; for as the man -- his might;` and Gideon riseth, and slayeth Zebah and Zalmunna, and taketh their round ornaments which [are] on the necks of their camels. 
And the men of Israel say unto Gideon, `Rule over us, both thou, and thy son, and thy son`s son, for thou hast saved us from the hand of Midian.` 
And Gideon saith unto them, `I do not rule over you, nor doth my son rule over you; Jehovah doth rule over you.` 
And Gideon saith unto them, `Let me ask of you a petition, and give ye to me each the ring of his prey, for they have rings of gold, for they [are] Ishmaelites.` 
And they say, `We certainly give;` and they spread out the garment, and cast thither each the ring of his prey; 
and the weight of the rings of gold which he asked is a thousand and seven hundred [shekels] of gold, apart from the round ornaments, and the drops, and the purple garments, which [are] on the kings of Midian, and apart from the chains which [are] on the necks of their camels, 
and Gideon maketh it into an ephod, and setteth it up in his city, in Ophrah, and all Israel go a-whoring after it there, and it is to Gideon and to his house for a snare. 
And Midian is humbled before the sons of Israel, and have not added to lift up their head; and the land resteth forty years in the days of Gideon. 
And Jerubbaal son of Joash goeth and dwelleth in his own house, 
and to Gideon there have been seventy sons, coming out of his loin, for he had many wives; 
and his concubine, who [is] in Shechem, hath born to him -- even she -- a son, and he appointeth his name Abimelech. 
And Gideon son of Joash dieth, in a good old age, and is buried in the burying-place of Joash his father, in Ophrah of the Abi-Ezrite. 
And it cometh to pass, when Gideon [is] dead, that the sons of Israel turn back and go a-whoring after the Baalim, and set over them Baal-Berith for a god; 
and the sons of Israel have not remembered Jehovah their God, who is delivering them out of the hand of all their enemies round about, 
neither have they done kindness with the house of Jerubbaal -- Gideon -- according to all the good which he did with Israel.
