1 Oracolo, parola dell’Eterno, rivolta a Israele per mezzo di Malachia.

2 Io v’ho amati, dice l’Eterno; e voi dite: "In che ci hai tu amati?" Esaù non era egli fratello di Giacobbe? Dice l’Eterno; e nondimeno io ho amato Giacobbe,

3 e ho odiato Esaù, ho fatto de’ suoi monti una desolazione, ho dato la sua eredità agli sciacalli del deserto.

4 Se Edom dice: "Noi siamo stati atterrati, ma torneremo e riedificheremo i luoghi ridotti in ruina," così parla l’Eterno degli eserciti: Essi edificheranno, ma io distruggerò; e saran chiamati Territorio della nequizia, e "Popolo contro il quale l’Eterno è indignato per sempre".

5 E i vostri occhi lo vedranno, e voi direte: L’Eterno è magnificato oltre i confini di Israele.

6 Un figlio onora suo padre, e un servo il suo Signore; se dunque io son padre, dov’è l’onore che m’è dovuto? E se son Signore, dov’è il timore che m’appartiene? Dice l’Eterno degli eserciti a voi, o acerdoti, che sprezzate il mio nome, e che pur dite: "In che abbiamo sprezzato il tuo nome?"

7 Voi offrite sul mio altare cibi contaminati, e dite: "In che t’abbiam contaminato?" L’avete fatto col dire: "La mensa dell’Eterno è spregevole".

8 Quand’offrite una bestia cieca per immolarla non è male? quando ne offrite una zoppa o malata, non è male? Presentala dunque al tuo governatore! Te ne sarà egli grato? Avrà egli de’ riguardi per la tua persona? dice l’Eterno degli eserciti.

9 Ora dunque, implorate pure il favore di Dio, perch’egli abbia pietà di noi! Sono le vostre mani quelle che han fatto ciò; e avrebbe egli, riguardo alla persona di alcuno di voi? dice l’Eterno degli eserciti.

10 Oh ci fosse pur qualcuno di voi che chiudesse le porte! Voi non accendereste invano il fuoco sul mio altare! Io non prendo alcun piacere in voi, dice l’Eterno degli eserciti, e le offerte delle vostre mani io non le gradisco.

11 Poiché dal sol levante fino al ponente grande è il mio nome fra le nazioni, e in ogni luogo s’offrono al mio nome profumo e oblazioni pure; poiché grande è il mio nome fra le nazioni, dice l’Eterno degli eserciti.

12 Ma voi lo profanate, col dire: "La mensa dell’Eterno è contaminata, e ciò che rende, come alimento, è cosa di nessun conto".

13 Voi dite pure: "Ah, che fatica!" e la trattate con disprezzo, dice l’Eterno degli eserciti. E menate vittime rubate, zoppe o malate, e queste sono le offerte che fate! Potrei io gradirle dalle vostre mani? dice l’Eterno.

14 Maledetto il fraudolento che ha nel suo gregge un maschio, e vota e offre in sacrifizio all’Eterno una bestia difettosa! Poiché io sono un re grande, dice l’Eterno degli eserciti, e il mio nome è tremendo fra le nazioni.

1 The burden of a word of Jehovah unto Israel by the hand of Malachi:

2 I have loved you, said Jehovah, And ye have said, `In what hast Thou loved us?`

3 Is not Esau Jacob`s brother? -- an affirmation of Jehovah, And I love Jacob, and Esau I have hated, And I make his mountains a desolation, And his inheritance for dragons of a wilderness.

4 Because Edom saith, `We have been made poor, And we turn back and we build the wastes,` Thus said Jehovah of Hosts: They do build, and I do destroy, And [men] have called to them, `O region of wickedness,` `O people whom Jehovah defied to the age.`

5 And your eyes do see, and ye say, `Magnified is Jehovah beyond the border of Israel,

6 A son honoureth a father, and a servant his master. And if I [am] a father, where [is] Mine honour? And if I [am] a master, where [is] My fear? Said Jehovah of Hosts to you, O priests, despising My name! And ye have said: `In what have we despised Thy name?`

7 Ye are bringing nigh on Mine altar polluted bread, And ye have said: `In what have we polluted Thee?` In your saying: `The table of Jehovah -- it [is] despicable,`

8 And when ye bring nigh the blind for sacrifice, `There is no evil,` And when ye bring nigh the lame and sick, `There is no evil;` Bring it near, I pray thee, to thy governor -- Doth he accept thee? or doth he lift up thy face? Said Jehovah of Hosts.

9 And now, appease, I pray thee, the face of God, And He doth favour us; From your own hand hath this been, Doth He accept of you appearances? Said Jehovah of Hosts.

10 Who [is] even among you, And he shutteth the two-leaved doors? Yea, ye do not kindle Mine altar for nought, I have no pleasure in you, said Jehovah of Hosts, And a present I do not accept of your hand.

11 For, from the rising of the sun to its going in, Great [is] My name among nations, And in every place perfume is brought nigh to My name, and a pure present, For great [is] My name among nations, Said Jehovah of Hosts.

12 And ye are polluting it in your saying, `The table of Jehovah -- it is polluted, As to its fruit -- despicable is its food.`

13 And ye have said, `Lo, what a weariness,` And ye have puffed at it, said Jehovah of Hosts, And ye have brought in plunder, And the lame and the sick, And ye have brought in the present! Do I accept it from your hand? said Jehovah.

14 And cursed [is] a deceiver, who hath in his drove a male, And is vowing, and is sacrificing a marred thing to the Lord, For a great king [am] I, said Jehovah of Hosts, And My name [is] revered among nations!
