1 Or Israele era stanziato a Sittim, e il popolo cominciò a darsi alla impurità con le figliuole di Moab.

2 Esse invitarono il popolo ai sacrifizi offerti ai loro dèi, e il popolo mangiò e si prostrò dinanzi agli dèi di quelle.

3 Israele si unì a Baal-Peor, e l’ira dell’Eterno si accese contro Israele.

4 E l’Eterno disse a Mosè: "Prendi tutti i capi del popolo e falli appiccare davanti all’Eterno, in faccia al sole, affinché l’ardente ira dell’Eterno sia rimossa da Israele".

5 E Mosè disse ai giudici d’Israele: "Ciascuno di voi uccida quelli de’ suoi uomini che si sono uniti a aal-Peor".

6 Ed ecco che uno dei figliuoli d’Israele venne e condusse ai suoi fratelli una donna Madianita, sotto gli occhi di Mosè e di tutta la raunanza dei figliuoli d’Israele, mentr’essi stavano piangendo all’ingresso della tenda di convegno.

7 La qual cosa avendo veduta Fineas, figliuolo di Eleazar, figliuolo del sacerdote Aaronne, si alzò di mezzo alla raunanza e die’ di piglio ad una lancia;

8 andò dietro a quell’uomo d’Israele nella sua tenda, e li trafisse ambedue, l’uomo d’Israele e la donna, nel basso ventre. E il flagello cessò tra i figliuoli d’Israele.

9 Di quel flagello morirono ventiquattromila persone.

10 L’Eterno parlò a Mosè, dicendo:

11 "Fineas, figliuolo di Eleazar, figliuolo del sacerdote Aaronne, ha rimossa l’ira mia dai figliuoli d’Israele, perch’egli è stato animato del mio zelo in mezzo ad essi; ed io, nella mia indignazione, non ho sterminato i figliuoli d’Israele.

12 Perciò digli ch’io fermo con lui un patto di pace,

13 che sarà per lui e per la sua progenie dopo di lui l’alleanza d’un sacerdozio perpetuo, perch’egli ha avuto zelo per il suo Dio, e ha fatta l’espiazione per i figliuoli d’Israele".

14 Or l’uomo d’Israele che fu ucciso con la donna Madianita, si chiamava Zimri, figliuolo di Salu, capo di una casa patriarcale dei Simeoniti.

15 E la donna che fu uccisa, la Madianita, si chiamava Cozbi, figliuola di Tsur, capo della gente di una casa patriarcale in Madian.

16 Poi l’Eterno parlò a Mosè, dicendo:

17 "Trattate i Madianiti come nemici e uccideteli,

18 poiché essi vi hanno trattati da nemici con gl’inganni mediante i quali v’hanno sedotti nell’affare di Peor e nell’affare di Cozbi, figliuola d’un principe di Madian, loro sorella, che fu uccisa il giorno della piaga causata dall’affare di Peor.

1 And Israel dwelleth in Shittim, and the people begin to go a-whoring unto daughters of Moab,

2 and they call for the people to the sacrifices of their gods, and the people eat, and bow themselves to their gods,

3 and Israel is joined to Baal-Peor, and the anger of Jehovah burneth against Israel.

4 And Jehovah saith unto Moses, `Take all the chiefs of the people, and hang them before Jehovah -- over-against the sun; and the fierceness of the anger of Jehovah doth turn back from Israel.`

5 And Moses saith unto the judges of Israel, `Slay ye each his men who are joined to Baal-Peor.`

6 And lo, a man of the sons of Israel hath come, and bringeth in unto his brethren the Midianitess, before the eyes of Moses, and before the eyes of all the company of the sons of Israel, who are weeping at the opening of the tent of meeting;

7 and Phinehas, son of Eleazar, son of Aaron, the priest, seeth, and riseth from the midst of the company, and taketh a javelin in his hand,

8 and goeth in after the man of Israel unto the hollow place, and pierceth them both, the man of Israel and the woman -- unto her belly, and the plague is restrained from the sons of Israel;

9 and the dead by the plague are four and twenty thousand.

10 And Jehovah speaketh unto Moses, saying,

11 `Phinehas, son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, hath turned back My fury from the sons of Israel, by his being zealous with My zeal in their midst, and I have not consumed the sons of Israel in My zeal.

12 `Therefore say, Lo, I am giving to him My covenant of peace,

13 and it hath been to him and to his seed after him a covenant of a priesthood age-during, because that he hath been zealous for his God, and doth make atonement for the sons of Israel.`

14 And the name of the man of Israel who is smitten, who hath been smitten with the Midianitess, [is] Zimri son of Salu, prince of the house of a father of the Simeonite;

15 and the name of the woman who is smitten, the Midianitess, [is] Cozbi daughter of Zur, head of a people -- of the house of a father in Midian [is] he.

16 And Jehovah speaketh unto Moses, saying,

17 `Distress the Midianites, and ye have smitten them,

18 for they are adversaries to you with their frauds, [with] which they have acted fraudulently to you, concerning the matter of Peor, and concerning the matter of Cozbi, daughter of a prince of Midian, their sister, who is smitten in the day of the plague for the matter of Peor.`
