1 Or les Philistins prirent l'Arche de Dieu, et l'emmenèrent d'Eben-hézer à Asdod.

2 Les Philistins donc prirent l'Arche de Dieu, et l'emmenèrent dans la maison de Dagon, et la posèrent auprès de Dagon.

3 Et le lendemain les Asdodiens s'étant levés de bon matin, voici, Dagon était tombé le visage contre terre, devant l'Arche de l'Eternel; mais ils prirent Dagon, et le remirent à sa place.

4 Ils se levèrent encore le lendemain de bon matin, et voici, Dagon était tombé le visage contre terre, devant l'Arche de l'Eternel; sa tête et les deux paumes de ses mains coupées, étaient sur le seuil, et le tronc seul de Dagon était demeuré auprès de [l'Arche].

5 C'est pour cela que les Sacrificateurs de Dagon, et tous ceux qui entrent en sa maison, ne marchent point sur le seuil de Dagon à Asdod, jusqu'à aujourd'hui.

6 Puis la main de l'Eternel s'appesantit sur le Asdodiens, et les rendit tout désolés, et les frappa au dedans du fondement dans Asdod, et dans tout son territoire.

7 Ceux donc d'Asdod voyant qu'il en allait ainsi, dirent : L'Arche du Dieu d'Israël ne demeurera point avec nous; car sa main est appesantie sur nous, et sur Dagon notre Dieu.

8 Et ils envoyèrent, et assemblèrent vers eux tous les Gouverneurs des Philistins, et dirent : Que ferons-nous de l'Arche du Dieu d'Israël? Et ils répondirent : Qu'on transporte à Gath l'Arche du Dieu d'Israël. Ainsi on transporta l'Arche du Dieu d'Israël.

9 Mais il arriva qu'après qu'on l'eut transportée, la main de l'Eternel fut sur la ville [de Gath] avec un fort grand effroi; et il frappa les gens de la ville depuis le plus petit jusqu'au plus grand, tellement que leur fondement était couvert.

10 Ils envoyèrent donc l'Arche de Dieu à Hékron. Or comme l'Arche de Dieu entrait à Hékron, ceux de Hékron s'écrièrent, en disant : Ils ont fait détourner vers nous l'Arche du Dieu d'Israël, pour nous faire mourir, nous et notre peuple.

11 C'est pourquoi ils envoyèrent, et assemblèrent tous les Gouverneurs des Philistins, en disant : Laissez aller l'Arche du Dieu d'Israël, et qu'elle s'en retourne en son lieu; afin qu'elle ne nous fasse point mourir, nous et notre peuple; car il y avait une frayeur mortelle par toute la ville, et la main de Dieu y était fort appesantie.

12 Et les hommes qui n'en mouraient point, étaient frappés au dedans du fondement, de sorte que le cri de la ville montait jusqu'au ciel.

1 Now the Philistines, having taken the ark of God, took it with them from Eben-ezer to Ashdod.

2 They took the ark of God into the house of Dagon and put it by the side of Dagon.

3 And when the people of Ashdod got up early on the morning after, they saw that Dagon had come down to the earth on his face before the ark of the Lord. And they took Dagon up and put him in his place again.

4 And when they got up early on the morning after, Dagon had come down to the earth on his face before the ark of the Lord; and his head and his hands were broken off on the doorstep; only the base was in its place.

5 So to this day no priest of Dagon, or any who come into Dagon's house, will put his foot on the doorstep of the house of Dagon in Ashdod.

6 But the hand of the Lord was hard on the people of Ashdod and he sent disease on them through all the country of Ashdod.

7 And when the men of Ashdod saw how it was, they said, Let not the ark of the God of Israel be with us, for his hand is hard on us and on Dagon our god.

8 So they sent for all the lords of the Philistines to come together there, and said, What are we to do with the ark of the God of Israel? And their answer was, Let the ark of the God of Israel be taken away to Gath. So they took the ark of the God of Israel away.

9 But after they had taken it away, the hand of the Lord was stretched out against the town for its destruction: and the signs of disease came out on all the men of the town, small and great.

10 So they sent the ark of God to Ekron. And when the ark of God came to Ekron, the people of the town made an outcry, saying, They have sent the ark of the God of Israel to us for the destruction of us and of our people.

11 So they sent and got together all the lords of the Philistines, and they said, Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it go back to its place, so that it may not be the cause of death to us and to our people: for there was a great fear of death through all the town; the hand of God was very hard on them there.

12 And those men who were not overtaken by death were cruelly diseased: and the cry of the town went up to heaven.
